One DVD player, one television - in the basement. The kids don't have their own TV's, nor will they ever...

When I get a projector set-up later this year, I'll probably buy another DVD player for that.

Another factor in the "saturation" is PS2 sales, which aren't included in these numbers. I know several people who use the PS2 as their primary DVD player, and there are tons of PS2s out there.

I have 5 DVD players (2 standalone, a PS2, my desktop computer and my laptop computer)

What is significant about these figures is they show the market is becoming saturated. What will the studios/manufacturers push to spur sales? Why a new format perhaps. Anyone heard of a new format in the works?

We have 6; One in the HT, one in the bedroom, two in the PC (ROM and RW) one in the laptop and a PS2.

We have a measly seven (changer in HT rack, recorder in HT rack, X-Box, portable, 2 notebooks on which we watch movies, and a desktop computer). But my Dad doesn't have any!

It's easy to have more than 5, they include them everywhere.

2 people in my house, and technically 8 DVD players

3 on TVs (1 per TV in main, computer room, main bedroom)
2 on computers (1 ea=>never use these for watching)
1 Portable (just got last week )
2 on videogame systems (PS2, XBox=> never use these)

I have bought 4 DVD players over the past 5 years, PC DVD players are not counted in the 1st post on this thread.

1. Given my 1st DVD player on my birthday (2000)
2. Replaced player when it died (2 years) with surround sound system
3. Replaced Surround Sound system when it died (1 1/2 years) with better Surround Sound system (Still working)
4. Bought another unit for my kids room (system died within one year)

5. I do have a DVD player in my PC that I never use
6. I do have an Xbox that my son now use as a DVD player, but this also does not count in the data in the 1st post

Out of the 85,713,040 DVD players sold, the number of households has to be only 50 million because of systems breaking, user upgrading and people wanting extra systems in their house.

Thats why I said we're approaching market saturation. Thus sales are slowing down, but not to the full saturation point where the only people buying players are those getting an additional one, replacing a broken one, or young people moving into their own place.

Wow! I guess I should feel deprived since I have only one DVD player. Don't even have a DVD drive on my computer. My old DVD player I sold to a friend (and it is still going strong) when I upgraded to progressive scan several years ago.

Not into accumulating gadgets I guess. If it works I don't fuss with it.

I've bought 6 DVD Players since 1999 when I bought my first one. I didn't buy them just to collect more players. There is a reason for so many players. My first one was a Toshiba. It has some problem when I use it to browse special features on a DVD and would lock up. I shipped it back to Toshiba for repair. They returned it but it still had problem. So when an Apex all region DVD player was on sale, I bought that. But that player has some audio problem. I can hear popping sound when I start playing a movie. So when Onkyo had a refurbished DVD player/receiver on sale, I bought it as my 3rd player. Well, it has video pixelation problem because of the problem with its mpeg decoder. I took it in video store to get it repaired. Then it had problem with discs popping out of the tray when I eject it. So I had to take it in for a 2nd time to get it repaired! So when Sony had a 400-disc DVD player onsale, I bought that as my 4th player. Then I start noticing that after I play my DVD with Sony player, the disc would have a circular mark gouged in the disc surface. I stopped playing with my Sony Player and shipped it back to Sony for repair. Then Circuit City had another sale with a combo Sony DVD Player + Receiver, so I bought it as my 5th player because my other Sony was still in the shop. So far this Sony DVD Player + Receiver hasn't had any defects like my previous players. *crossing my fingers* Oh yeah, my 6th player is a DVD-ROM drive on my PC that I have for a few years. My DVD-ROM drive doesn't play a lot of DVD. Also, the eject tray sometimes doesn't work.

So now you know the reason why I have so many DVD players.

Each of my players has a purpose.

1) region-free player (my main player; won't play DVD-Rs though)

2) DVD recordable (make my own DVDs either from TV or convert PAL to NTSC or transfer VHS to DVD)

3) PS2 (plays ANYTHING in my region)

4) DVD-+RW on my PC (use this to copy DVDs (concerts, pro-wrestling stuff and all that))

5) RCA player in my bedroom

6) my VHS in my bedroom died, so I needed a new one. The only good deals I could get was a VHS/DVD combo, so I have two players in my bedroom.

7) DVD player in my other, older PC (not used); also my X-BOX works as a DVD player, but I don't use it for that either.

I have 4 dvd players and a portable. I don't even think I owned that many VCRS at once when they were the thing to have. One big thing that is different between VCRS and DVD players is DVD players last a hell of lot longer. On average, I was replacing VCRS almost yearly or getting them fix. I have one dvd player that has to be around 6 years old and still runs like it is new. Two others are about 3 to 4 years old and no issues. I think that is where the dvd player market will hurt the most since these things really don't break.

Well I've had to replace my DVD player twice since 1998! My GE VCR, that I bought in 1989, is still running without any trouble.

As someone who has purchased 6 DVD players (not including PC or gaming systems) over the past 8 years (first gen->progressive->DVD-Audio/SACD, 2nd unit->DVD/VHS combo, and a portable unit), of which 4 are still in use, I don't see myself purchasing another DVD player again.

Wow, I feel so deprived... I only have 3.

1 stand-alone in master bedroom
1 PS2
1 on my computer

Those are the only DVD players I have ever owned (and all I need until one breaks, or until I upgrade to HD).

I, sadly, only have 2.5 players...

My main player, the original Apex with the secret menus
My PS2 (purchased in December)
and an old PC drive, which is probably pretty close to first generation. I had to remove it from my computer, as it was acting up, and I haven't replaced it with another DVD drive yet.

One of these days, I will get an X-Box, but I am in no rush. I would like to get a progressive player, but since my set-up is a 20 year old 27" TV, again, I am in no rush... I wouldn't mind a portable player someday, and when I upgrade my computer, I will get at least a Rom, if not a +/-R.

Only have 1 that I use, which is a Sony in my HT.

Also have a PS2, X-box and Laptop, but the first two have never been used as DVD player, and the Laptop only a hand full of times.
