The Wizard?
I haven't seen this movie since I was 10 years old. I think it was called "The Wizard" or something very similiar. It was about a kid who was a video game god who went to this game tournament. The movie also showed Mario 3 before it was even released for the NES. Is this movie on DVD or is it going to be put on DVD anytime?
|
As silly of a movie as it is, I always loved it, me and my friends are all in college now and we still quote it all the time, we actually made a short spoof of it, pretty funny. But anyways as far as the DVD, I'm pretty sure the only one that exists is in German, and unfortunately I have never heard of any new plans to bring it to the US.

"I love the Power Glove"

Yeah, well, uh, just keep your Power Gloves off her, pal, huh?

I'm sure this will get the Universal catalog selection that goes for 9.99 nothing in site |
I have the official video tape of this that one of my friends gave me on my birthday (in college). But I want a DVD of it, too, dammit!
|
I remember seeing the movie for a birthday party when I was 8 or 9. I would love a release of the movie, but I fear it would probably be full-screen like the Savage starring movie Little Monsters.
|
I have the Region 2 PAL German DVD of Joystick Heroes (Germany's name for The Wizard) Unfortunatly it's fullscreen and only in German. There's no English whatsoever, except the credits. I started work a long time ago to sync it up with English audio from the US VHS. It was a very time consuming project, because of the PAL speedup. I was even going to make special menus where you can go to scenes featuring a specific game. One of these days I'll eventually get back to working on it and I may pass out copies or something.
|
I also have this on VHS. I really want this on DVD.
|
would love to have this movie on DVD. Super Mario Bros. 3 ruled.
|
i also fear a full frame release...e mail universal and tell them you want it...OAR
|
One of the best propaganda films in modern times. Such an awesome video. SUPER MARIO 3!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

That movie sold a lot of Nintendo games back in the day. I remember it was the only movie made at the time that had something to do with real video games and every 10 year old kid drooled over it. I know I did.

the girl on the cover above is the lead singer of the band rilo kiley. also some dude from salute your shorts is the guitarist for them too.

It's amazing what goofy movies people hold near and dear to their hearts, isn't it?

CALIFORNIA!!!!! CALIFORNIA!!!!!!
I'd buy this in a second. I still have the mini Nintendo Power issue I got at the theater. It made me get a Power Glove ($55!) but I couldn't figure it out, so I traded it for Double Dragon 2. I never did get Super Mario 3 until like 5 years ago though... It's been on TV fairly recently I think, well, maybe a year ago... I bought the tape from a video store that went out of business... This is where I first heard the song, "Send Me an Angel"... great song. The girl in the video is Jenny Lewis. Cute redhead. Got a couple of her TV appearances on tape somewhere, I think one is from Just the Ten of Us. She was also in the 'I don't want to grow up' commercials from Toys R Us. Anyways, here is a site petitioning a DVD release... Click ME!! |
According to IMDB, there was a laserdisc made of it. It says it's in 1.33:1 Unmatted format, whether that's widescreen or pan&scan, it's probably as close to digital as you're gonna get. You can probably get all 'Star Wars' (non special edition) on this, find someone with the Laserdisc and record it to a DVD-R. Something I've been looking out for for a while already with no luck... more than likely you'll find it at a flea market with:
a. a messed up cover b. scratched to high hell or c. laser rotted. But if you do come across it in great shape, grab it as quick as you can. I'll sign that petition for a release. But it's gotta be 2.35:1 widescreen, 5.1 DTS, with commentaries and a where are they now featurette... lol... j/k |
Here's a couple more sites...
Wizard on an 80's site. lots of info, bloopers X Entertainment's take, 5 short video clips Same petition as before, but with a pic of the German release Breakdown of the movie with real and implied dialogue. FUNNY! I could post bunches... wizard nintendo movie pops up 237,000 matches on Google. I only went through the first 3 pages of links. |
wow I can't believe that I never made the connection between Lewis and Rilo Kiley, I've been listening to that band for months, they're awesome.

great guilty pleasure film "You scored 50,000 on Double Dragon!" |
so we know where 'corey' and the lovely redhead 'hailey' went (careers).. but what ever happened to jimmy and lucas?
i saw this movie in the theatre as well, and yes i was about 10 too.. i remember a huge gasp in the audience when at the game tournament the electronic doors opened to reveal super mario bros. 3. if i remember correctly (as a former nintendo power subscriber =) that was the first time the game was ever introduce to the general public.. awesome to do it that way. |
|
It'd be REALLY cool if someone could do a parody/remake of this movie taking place in the late 70s, where they go to an Atari contest.
|
Hmmm. Well 'Lucas' (Jackey Vinson) hasn't done much according to IMDB.
Luke Edwards, I remember him from Little Big League and I Know My First Name Is Steven (made before Wizard)... Wish I knew how to make a recording of that audio on that flash page... The site says it was last updated 2003, and some of those links are broken, looks like the site owner gave up on it... Too bad. I remember reading somewhere that Luke and everyone had to play Nintendo games like crazy to get good... They played SM3 for weeks before filming. It's said it was a blooper of sorts that Haley knows about the warp whistle? Well she calls it a magic flute, so that's wrong, but... It's been said that the Nintendo Power mag didn't talk about this 'cheat' until months later. So... She was visibly upset when the moderator said the finalists would be playing a new game, but maybe she had been told a few things about the game by the Nintendo Power expert she talked to for seemingly hours... (That service was expensive! How could they afford it? Spanky only got them $390!) EDIT: just found this site ----Wizard vs. Rain Man And here is a message board devoted to the film, but it has VERY little activity... |
Was browsing the Universal press site and found something that might interest fans of The Wizard. Universal Studios is planning on releasing it on August 29th with a 1.85:1 Anamorphic Widescreen transfer. I highly doubt that there will be any special features because it will be released on a DVD-5 disc.
I've posted the specs that were on their site on dvdnn.com |
Great news! Let's just hope it's true!
|
Yeah, I'd definitely pick this up. The very definition of "guilty pleasure". :D
|
Awesome! Now if we can get Monster Squad and Howard the Duck.
