No, actually, I've never heard someone discounting an entire genre. I've heard of people who don't like horror movies because they don't like being scared, but they still like the ones they've seen. I just can't possibly think of a good reason why you wouldn't like epic films. Care to explain?

I'd find it far more annoying to see a 4+ movie and multiple soundtracks compressed onto a single disc.

People who'd rather not see them try to cram 4.5 hours of movie + DTS + commentaries onto one single-sided DVD. I can only imagine how terrible the results would be.

Ok, that sentence makes no sense. If they don't like horror movies, then why would they say "I like the ones I've seen."? Anyway, to quote myself "I'm not a fan of epic films." That doesn't mean I refuse to watch them does it? Can't I be a fan of one genre over another? How ridiulous is it that these views need explanation? To each their own.

it says that people often discount the horror genre despite enjoying its better offerings.

this is a discussion forum. we discuss, share, argue, question and critique each other's ideas on the topic at hand. you have to admit, mentioning that you don't like an entire genre is intriguing and will provoke a response. you must have known that, or why else would you make a reference to it? not in hopes that it would go unnoticed or ignored and disappear for all eternity, i'm sure.

having said that, I'd still like to know why you don't like epics.

My example of horror movies was that people might avoid them because they don't like the feeling of being scared, but on the whole, they enjoy the quality films for what they are, and not discount them because they are only of a specific genre.

Please don't take my asking as a personal attack, I was just curious. Like cygnet74 said, it is an odd thing to say and then avoid explaining further. I've never heard anyone say that before, especially about such a popular genre.

I just bought a copy of Back to School because my previous copy was lost.
On my copy it says 16:9 Widescreen 1:85:1 Theatrical Release Format, but does not say 16:9 enhanced. Where exactly should it say 16:9 enhanced? Could you post a picture? If I got the bad version I can return it for the proper one because have not opened the dvd yet.

The Goodtimes release of the 1949 film 'Jet Pilot' is a perfect example of 'Fake Widescreen'. Filmed at the industry standard of 1:37 to 1, it was held up (due to Howard Hawks tinkering with the aerial scenes) being released until 1957.

I have both the Universal LD release and the Goodtimes DVD release. A side-by-side comparison of the two presentations shows that the DVD version just has black bars laying across the top and bottom of the image, and adding nothing to the sides. This is not a case of an 'open matte' release by Universal, just a rotten presentation by Goodtimes.

the current version of the shining (tv miniseries) is in 1:85 widescreen as well, and i actually prefer the widescreen framing as well.

There's a scene where Spencer Tracy has his mother and daughter talking to each other via phone (one phone being held up to another phone), and there is a police captain who walks in the room. Well, when you notice the dialogue between Tracy and the captain, it is very clear you are supposed to be seeing the phones! But, you can't! They've been chopped off the bottom of the screen.

There are many other scenes which would have been more entertaining if they weren't chopped.
If there's picture missing from the bottom, it sounds like MGM used a 35mm reduction made for Super Panavision specs, instead of Ultra Panavision. The same thing happened to Ben-Hur... one of the problems with using the wrong reduction specs is that a great deal of lower frame is lost, when it should have been kept.

SWR 1, if the back refers to having both the Theatrical Trailer and a Collectible Booklet, you have the old, jacked-up version; if the back mentions ONLY a theatrical trailer as the sole special feature, then you're good to go!

The "Front Row Entertainment" version of Sonny Chiba's "Shogun's Ninja" is a fake widescreen. The box says Widesceen Edition in big letters. Instead it's a pan & scan videotape with black bars dropped on the top and bottom. All that's left of the movie is the middle 25% of the screen. It's really appalling.

I keep telling my wife not to buy the bargain-brand disks.

Thank you scarredgod...I don't get why it's such an issue either. It must be an east coast/west coast thing.

Honestly guys, it isn't an issue, I'm just genuinely curious. If you don't feel like explaining why you don't like them, then don't; no big deal.

My copy only says Original Theatrical Trailer, so I guess I got the corrected version. Thank you for your help Filmmaker.
