Argh. I can't believe Paramount is only releasing this in fullscreen!

I wouldn't want them to crop it just to be able to have it fill my widescreen TV. I would be happy if this finally came out. Have had it saved on my DVR from TMC for too long.

Looking through the web, I found out that the African Queen was filmed in a 1.37:1 aspect ratio which was very popular at that time (1932-1953). So that listing by Wal-Mart is correct. It will be a full frame presentation.

Bluray.com is also reporting this as a possibility, but nothing concrete. Oh well, so Criterion didn't get it, but it has been a long time coming.

Yeah, there's a pre-order for the Blu on the Wal*Mart link.

As far as Criterion getting it goes, I wouldn't have expected them to. Paramount has supposedly been working on this and Wings for some time now; I wouldn't expect them to do that if they were just going to license it off.

For those who can't wait for the dvd, TCM is showing it at 2:15am on the 17th of December. TCM lists it on their December 16th schedule as their daily 24 hr. schedule generally begins around 4:00am.

Why don't they just announce a release date of 04/01 already?

Oh for crying out loud, of course there is an SD. How in the world do you think they can even justify the restoration costs with the chump change they're going to make off of a Blu release? Sheesh.

Except, of course, that that isn't true at all. You Blu-bashers are really getting desperate.

I'll give Paramount credit for this. Day and date, in the format of your choice, you can either get the tricked out version with all the swag, or the basic version with all the features and none of the toys. Personally, I play with the gadgets for 10 minutes, put them on a shelf and never see them again. Learned my lesson many times over, disc only for me.

I wouldn't be too concerned. It's only Warner that's trying the strong-arm tactics. The rest of the studios seem to understand where 90% of their sales come from. Every now and then Disney gets cute, but they screw over pretty much every segment of their customer base at one time or another.

Meanwhile, there's nothing to suggest that Paramount is doing the same tactics with this title that WB has been doing as of late, thus making your original comment pointless.

Back on topic, as I stated in the HD thread, about goddamn time!
