New Release Date for Dune SE DVD?

Play USA is reporting a new release date for Dune on DVD of July 26th. Most likely there will be no involvement from David Lynch on this release. I'm guessing we will get another press release sometime next week.

hope thats true

Extended cut, no Lynch involvement. Here's the description from a rip of it that's floating around:

ok where to begin. 2 discs both movie. long cut. was supposed to be released in the states may 10th but not going to happen. this is the extended cut with new voice over and new scenes added in. it's rough but it's as close to Dune as you're going to get
Why can't I help thinking this is going to be as much a disaster as the current extended cut?

Maybe so, but the original theatrical cut's on there as well. No biggie.

I think I'd buy anything at this point. We've waited long enough.

My only problem with him is that he has a history of repeatedly making claims that turn out to be in no way true.

Also, you can't discredit something that debunks a claim you made yourself.

Well, you can, if you can offer proof. But when you've got nothing to show to prove your claims, and the opposing claim comes from someone actually in a personal position to know, it rings hollow, to say the least.

Yeah, it would be cool to have Lynch do a Director's Cut & Commentary and all that, but at this point I'll settle for just about anything that's an improvement over the current 1-Discer.

Any word if this new extended edition will be the "Alan Smithee" cut? I ask because the Sci-Fi Channel aired the "Alan Smithee" cut the other day and I started to watch it and quite frankly, I was bored by the time the opening animated narrated part was over.

Hopefully this new cut is just the deleted scenes stuck back into the regular Lynch version.

HOLY!

I just read on the bits, Lynch HAS recut the film and it's 212 minutes! There's two commentarys, and they had a $250,000 budget to fix the FX on the extended cut!

Release Date is July 26.

He said it was at "the bits", but there is no such story posted at the Digital Bits today. The site did 'report' (i.e. make up) a story a few months ago that Lynch was involved in recutting the movie, but this was denied by Lynch himself.

Universal Releases New Ultimate Dune DVD in France
Although the US release date is currently up in the air, France received what looks to be the new Ultimate Dune 3 Disc DVD from Universal. Most notably are a few changes from the original US release specs including no actual Deleted Scenes (only photos) and only a 4:3 transfer of the TV version. Good news for audiophiles is that the DTS track is back on this French DVD release (previously dropped on the US release at the last minute). Whether or not the US DVD will be a direct port of the French release remains to be seen. One other thing I will note is that the transfer for this version looks just amazing. You can see additional caps and a screenshot comparison by heading over to DVDFR.com.

there's some other places where you can see lots of screenshots of the french release, for more info there's a thread over in the International DVD area... the screencaps are AMAZING. Here's hoping that the US release still happens, and looks that good!

Guess no word? I have to say between this and the postponement of the SE of Face/Off, this has been a very poor summer for anticipated DVDs.

Further Details
Universal Home Video has today announced a new extended edition of Dune which stars the likes of Kyle MacLachlan, Jose Ferrer, Max von Sydow and Linda Hunt. The disc will be available to own from the 10th May, and should set you back around $27.98 in total. I'm afraid we dont have any details on extra material at the moment, but we can confirm that the disc will carry both the 2 hour 17 minute theatrical cut, along with the unrated 3 hour 10 minute extended cut. We'll bring you further details on this one, very shortly.

I wonder what the hell that was about? ^

Anyway, the bump on this thread reminds me that I've recently added comparison reviews of the UK, Australian, and French SEs on my Dune site:

http://www.mindspring.com/~dunestuff/av.html#DVD

The French disc is a winner.
