High Noon is definatley a western...a good one at that...
to chime in on the spaghetti western scene...these films also treated the west like a real place....where murder for gold was alright...as opposed to the classic good guys wear white hats....bad guys wear black hats.....
the diffrence is...clint eastwood will shoot a man in the back...john wayne wouldn't...
lot of good stuff here...keep it coming

. Three in one scene in The Searchers, and then that other movie, which would be a spoiler if I even mentioned the title.
I think you could argue that John Wayne played some darker characters than Eastwood ever did, actually--although I think they're both fantastic actors.

Sam Fuller's Forty Guns is amazing - it's coming out on DVD (R1) this year.
Some favorite Italian westerns of mine:
Day of Anger
Django
Django, Kill...
Vengeance
Companeros
Boot Hill
Stranger's Gundown
The Great Silence

Only a couple of decent modern westerns:
I'm a big fan of Tombstone. It's flashy, but you've just gotta love Kilmer's take on Doc Holiday. Plus it's a great DVD.
Unforgiven is terrific, and is by far my favorite Eastwood western. I like to think that it's the conclusion of the "Dollars" movies.
