What are some of the best Westerns on DVD?

Just wondering what are your opinions of some great classic westerns that are on dvd now. Not looking for the Spaghetti Westerns but good classics.

OF more modern ones, I'd add Silverado to the list and, of course, Maverick if you want to bring teh funny.

I'm partial to Lonesome Dove.

Requisite 'The Searchers' answer.

Unfortunately, some of the best Westerns aren't on DVD... like Nicholas Ray's Johnny Guitar. :(

dick_grayson 01-10-05 04:52 PM

yeah, there are a lot of great westerns that haven't had the proper treatment or are bare bones only. there are several threads on westerns and dvds. a good one to get is the High Noon Special Edition. Or the new Good Bad & Ugly SE.

If we're leaving out spaghetti westerns, that's probably my favorite too.

Some off the top of my head. I listed ones not on DVD that I have seen and liked, they are marked as "-", the ones on DVD with "+". Whether "classic" or not is up to each viewer I suppose.

+Stagecoach (1939)
+Last Train from Gun Hill
+Destry Rides Again (1939)
-Ride the High Country
+The Wild Bunch
-Man of the West
+One Eyed Jacks (public domain)
+Little Big Man
+Bite the Bullet
+The Long Riders
+My Darling Clementine
-Fort Apache (1948)
+The Shootist
+She Wore a Yellow Ribbon
+The Magnificent Seven
+The Professionals
+Support Your Local Sherriff!
+Support Your Local Gunfighter
+The Paleface
+Son of Paleface
+Once Upon a Time in the West ... I know, spaghetti, but arguably the best of them and the 2 disk DVD is terrific and cheap

All of the Anthony Mann - James Stewart westerns, some already noted:

+Winchester '73
+Bend of the River
-The Naked Spur
+The Far Country
+The Man from Laramie

The fox studio classics ones are great

The Ox-Bow Incident
My Darling Clementine

Ky-Fi 01-10-05 05:56 PM

Two somewhat lesser-known ones that I would highly recommend are:

The Big Country
The Comancheros

Great DVDs---beautiful widescreen anamorphic prints, rousing scores. The late 50's/early 60's were about the peak of westerns, IMO.

What? No mention of Shane? That's one of my favs!

Also, did Arnold do a western early in his carrer? I've never seen it, if anyone knows the name I'd like to netflix it.

I was about to post the same titles! But then again, I'm a sucker for Henry Fonda.

I love The Ox-Bow Incident, and I've also heard that it's one of Clint Eastwood's favorites so that's saying something I guess.

The Villain (1979)

And it would be bordering on criminal if this discussion gets to a 2nd page without the mention of The Outlaw Josey Wales.

cisco1959 01-10-05 08:50 PM

Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid
The Cowboys
High Noon
The Jack Bull
True Grit

I second that, along with Dead Man.
