As for Jurassic Park, first they need to get permission from Spielberg, who may be holding off on his titles like he did with standard DVD. Then, they will release his films on a staggered basis just like before. |
This HD DVD thing will sink like the Titanic. Hell, HDTV still has not even caught on and they expect people to buy another DVD player and an HDTV? This is going to be a joke. I will not be doublr dipping on ANYTHING I have. I hope it drives the price of "regular" DVD's down further also, that would be the ONLY plus because I am not switching.

I can totally respect the "wait and see" attitude, but the outright hostility against any form of HD is just silly. The difference is staggering. I'm going back to watching the SD v. NYJ game in HD.
I have HD also. I was just pointing out that the majority of people do not. Do you happen to know the percentage of people who subscribe to HD? HDTV is not even in the mainstream yet, that is all I was pointing out. Plus at $1000 a pop for the HD DVD player I think I will pass for a while. These are just my opinions. |
Even if HD does come out, they will not give up the cashcow dvd market anytime soon. The one title that stands out here to me is Batman Begins. Will it get a dvd9/dvd15 release on the same disc? Will it be released in two different editions for both markets? Will W-B experiment with it by only selling it to HD buyers? Should be interesting to see how they handle releases of the same film on two different mediums.
I believe a HD format will eventually take over for dvd, but it won't happen untill we have one format. Untill then we know it will be a niche market. At least it sounds like it will be much cheaoer than LD right off the bat. Since Toshiba and Sony are not giving in on this "format war" maybe they will work out an agreement to manufacture one machine that will play both while splitting the studios in half? Columbia/MGM/Fox/Dreamworks/Disney can release their titles on Blue-Ray while W-B/New Line/Paramount/Universal go with Hd-dvd? Lot's of questions we won't know for a while. |

I am gonna wait and see. I really am interested in Sony's Blu-Ray because I like many of Sony's products. They hardly failed me. I love their dvd players. -ant |

So what format are these announced titles gonna be in? Blu-Ray or HD-DVD? Are they gonna come in 720p, 1080i, or maybe even 1080P? I'm assuming with either format there should be plenty of room to little or no compression would be required. I don't want them to start releasing SuperBit HD titles. Does anyone know how much space a High Definition 2 hour movie that is uncompressed may require? I'm guessing more that even Bou-Ray or HD-DVD has capacity for to some compression would likely be needed.

If you look at the begining you will see that all these titles are HD DVD.
Did you even read this thread?! |
The Dukes of Hazzard? Ah yes, that's EXACTLY the type of programming that would benefit from having a high definition presentation - a 25 year old TV show that looks about as good right now as it ever will.
Whats next: Gilligan's Island: the HD version? ****EDIT**** Do the players come with the Blury Hand Girl too? That's worth the grand right there. http://img136.exs.cx/img136/6412/bd218qx.jpg |

Wow, those pics are sweet! Makes me feel like I did back in '97 when I saw the first DVD players at J&R.

Will the DTS tracks be full bit-rate? Can we expect more titles to support DD EX/DTS ES on Blu-Ray and HD DVD?

I can't even get my cable system to broadcast FOX with the sound synced up to the picture. I can't imagine how long it will be before I have a large enough selection of HD available to me enough to make it worth the investment in the equipment.
I can't imagine investing in HDTV, etc. just for the next-gen DVDs. I'd want the television broadcasts, too. But I'm all for the process getting started with the releases of the new players and titles in the new format since that's the beginning of the price decreases that will eventually make it worth my while (and, in the case of HD-DVD, the beginning of the 'format war' shake-out, which I would like to be solved by the time I buy). |
When CDs came out, people bought not only for the sound quality, but they were so compact that you can store more of them than LP's and cassettes. When I was buying VHS, I kept waiting for something more compact. When LD came out, I was at first interested. But no matter how great the picture was compared to VHS, when I found out that you still had to stop and flip the LD over for a 90 minute movie, I said no way and kept buying VHS.
Years later, when I saw the first 5 DVDs hit the stores, I was hooked. But when I saw the prices of the DVD players, I wouldn't buy it yet. I just started buying DVD movies. Just over 2 years later when players were annouced to carrying DTS, I finally bought one. Just then Dvyx comes out and after seeing that, I thought it was the worst idea of bad ideas. I've been selling all my VHS tapes and currently I have just over 2300 DVDs collected, not counting TV Series. Am I excited about better picture, sound and extras? Yes. But, because of the prices and the 2 formats, I'm holding off on buying a player till the price comes down and the HD-DVD / Blu-Ray war is solved. Even if they come out with a player that plays both, one of them most likely will fall out. If one calls it quits, now all the movies you bought that was from that format are worthless in. In my opinion. Example, if Universal comes out with Jurassic Park in both formats. Even if both formats have the same picture, sound and extras, which format do you go with? As for double dipping, maybe. Depends on which one has better extras. |
and news if DTS is an audio option? Warner has never been a large supporter of DTS on DVD, so I think they'll likely follow suit on HD-DVD. New Line will probably support DTS. HBO? The only project they did in DTS was Band of Brothers, but that was a Speilberg project. Universal still owns some stake in the format, so the odds or very likely. Paramount is 50/50, they've just recently shown signs of supporting DTS on DVD, but not much. fitprod |
