Wonder when Universal plans to release Jurassic Park.

Blu-Ray is backwards compatible too, my wife's friend has a Blu-Ray recorder (in Japan of course). As for prices, right now in Japan, the recorders are around $2000-3000.00 and blank discs are over $30.00 each. That's a good sized price drop since they debuted about a year ago, and I'm sure by the time they show up here, the price will be even less.

Oh God... Where is Star Wars??? Not again... I guess we'll get it in another 10 yrs...

Congrats! I honestly think this may be the first post on the Internet bitching that Star Wars is not available on HD-DVD.

Although I'm sure it won't be the last. ;)

p.s. - Fox still has not commited to one of the formats, so they certainly aren't ready to announce titles. And who knows what Lucasfilm's plans are... although I'm sure they'll do they same thing they did with DVD (that is, sit back and wait for a large % of homes to adopt the format). I'm not sure this is a bad idea.

Some of the choices seem strange. Catwoman? End of Days?!?!

If the prices are $20ish, I'll wait to buy the HD-DVD versions of Bourne Supremacy, Batman Begins, ST First Contact and Sky Captain. Absolutely no way I'm double dipping on anything save for my absolute favorites. And that depends on the price of the media and of the players. If this turns into some "enthusiast" sub-genre like LD and the prices are much greater than standard DVDs for a sustained time, I'll stick with DVD over HD-DVD on new releases.

My MyHD card upconverting DVDs to 1080i to my Toshiba 51H83 is all I need if the price ain't right. I've compared X2 upconverted vs. Directv HD and the upconversion had a better picture. While that might not always be the case, the quality of upconversions is of high enough grade that it certainly isn't worth the money to double dip my entire library.

I bought a HDTV and will use it to it's fullest potential and capabilities. Those with a HDTV who say they are not interested, I do not believe. If the price is decent, you will all be there.

It won't replace dvd (not everyone has a HDTV), but DVDs have changed movie watching to a collecting hobby and a techinical interest. Anybody with a great home theater will embrace HD-DVD whether they'll admit it or not. I know it's hard to look at your collection and think it'll be replaced (which it won't, not for a loooong time anyways), but that's technology.

When the player price plunges, I'll bite. May be a few years before that happens but after seeing VHS and DVD players go from $1000 to $50 or less, it's hard to justify being the first on the bandwagon.

There are still millions out there with no DVD player, at prices starting under $30-40 for players, I find it hard to believe that it is not worthwhile for the studios to start throwing in DVD players with DVDs versus releaseing things on VHS.

Untill the prices of the players drop drastically, we will see a fairly slow adoptation oh HD-DVD players. Many here wont pay $1000 for a player, let alone the average Joe.

This is great news! I can't Believe Rattle and Hum is a launch title. It was one of my first DVDs and now will be my first HD-DVD. I certainly respect anyone who wants to wait. I will probably buy the first player out. I love DVD and I now love my HD TV. I will buy all new movies on HD and I will only double dip on my favorite titles or titles that look alot better.

I really hope they don't drop the extras. I would be happy if they included a second standard dvd with the extras, that way the extras disc could be the same as the standard DVDs they sell.

This is only partly related to this topic, but I don't understand why people bitch about double dips? If you are fan of a movie you should be thrilled to have more options, no one is forcing you to buy both.

I was only going to upgrade when one of Fincher's films appeared on the new format. With Se7en being a launch title, looks like I'll be upgrading this year.

HARD TO KILL

Why is Warner releasing this piece of trash as a launch title over titles like the Fugitive, Unforgiven, Amadeus, Batman, Shawshank Redemption, and Training Day?

I think the earliest we'll see Star Wars on Blu-Ray/HD-DVD is 2007, the 30th anniversary of the original film. That's when the rumored ultimate box set is due out.

What's also enticing about the Blu-ray format is that the disc will be a single substrate unlike current DVDs (and current HD-DVD spec) that have two layers glued together. This should eliminate any potential for dvd rot and reduce the chance of discs cracking over time.

I'm looking forward to the new disc scratch protection coating that the blu-ray will be using. Haven't heard if HD-DVD will be using it though.

Ignoring both formats until players are around $200-$250. Lets just hope Fox dosnt release Buffy otr Angel anytime soon, it will be hard to resist.

Believe us or not, there ARE quite a few of us who won't quickly be jumping on the HD-DVD bandwagon anytime soon.

Do you have a high-quality progressive scan DVD player connected to your HDTV via quality component cables? Has your TV been tuned and optimized by a qualified/certified technician? I can't take anyone's claims about "fullest potential and capabilities" if they haven't at least done these basic things.

Yawn. $1,000 players to be able to watch double dips of perfectly good DVD's. Go ahead trend-setters, purchase a $1,000 player so you can watch Austin Powers in pristine video.

It seems to be that DVD caught on big with the public because it provides a great leap over VHS capabilities. LaserDisc, no matter how many titles were released, never became a mainstream way of life for most of the American public the way DVDs did.

HD-DVD, Blu Ray, whatever doesn't provide that much of a leap. Sure if you are a video completist and notice the small differences (and have a system that can do it), these new formats could provide some supposed improvements. But for most of the public, DVD is pretty damn good and I can't see how these manafacturers are going to convince anyone other than video/audio nitpickers to spend $1,000 for a player. When prices reach $200-$300, then we will see some people picking an HD-DVD or Blue Ray when their current DVD player dies.

Warner is wise to release the Matrix trilogy in HD-DVD to get some fans interested in this new format. Why hasnt New Line post the release of the Lord of the Rings trilogy on its list? That could in deed get people's attention in HD-DVD.

I will get into Blu-Ray and/or HD-DVD but not right away. I think I'll wait and see what happens with the region coding situation and if the possibility of region free players/recorders will become available. I really don't want to add a 3rd DVD player into my HT(I already have a region free player and a recorder). if a combo player/recorder becomes avail. that would make my decision easier and if a region free unit was released it would even easier yet.

I know these players are some type of prototypes, but why are they so huge?

You can tell from even the screenshots that the picture quality of High Definition DVD will be amazing.
