Whew! I was wondering when I was going to get my Catwoman in HD fix. Thank god that is one of the first batch!

supersonicx 01-07-05 07:22 AM

As Mr. Burns would say: Excellent.

ShagMan 01-07-05 07:32 AM

SONOVA!!! That makes me fuming mad, DVD-HD gets a Dark City, but regular DVD fans have been waiting for a re-release of the old snapper in anamorphic for YEARS!!! Same goes for Dune.

I believe that Dark city is indeed 16:9 in the curent version.

I will wait buying the Matrix box a little now...

Bollocks. I am still hoping they push it back to Summer 2006 just so there may be a possibility of more of a standard than two seperate ones right now. Here's to hoping this works out for all involved

There's probably around ten titles I'd double-dip right off the bat, but that's about it. Let's see how the format wars turn out his year.

RichardW 01-07-05 08:00 AM

WB has a great list of titles. I could see myself buying quite a few of those. I'm not too excited about the Paramount/Universal lists, though. It's really too bad that we will have a format war. At least it'll keep me from being an early adopter.

Geofferson 01-07-05 08:43 AM

Cool!

Cameron 01-07-05 08:46 AM

this should be fun...i wonder what retailers will carry these

CoolKidd 01-07-05 08:53 AM

I just bought the Ultimate Matrix last week. D'oh. Oh well, I will wait out the format war and price drops before jumping in. It will also give them some time to master the format as well.

minesh1 01-07-05 09:57 AM

I don't know, but I'm definitely going to have to see for myself (no pun intended) whether HD-DVD is justifiably better before I double dip on any titles I currently own. Any new purchases will probably be HD, unless the price differential is too much (~$10).

Speaking of which, any idea what the pricing of discs and players is projected to be?

I saw the new Toshiba HD-DVD unit at CES yesterday. It's slated for a Q4 2005 release with an MSRP of $1000

I wouldn't worry about the format war. By the time the players become affordable to the masses, if both formats are still around, you will start to see universal players like the SACD/DVD-A players.

RUN-DvdMC 01-07-05 10:08 AM

Is the quality of the pic going to be that noticeable in HD-DVD? I don't have an HD tv and I was wondering if it was worth waiting to purchase some of those titles on regular dvd if HD-DVD is going to be that much of a difference. Also will these new dvds have enough room for supplements or will they be barebones like the superbit titles. Thanks for the answers guys.

Class316 01-07-05 10:10 AM

IMO wasting money on this before there's even a standard format is just silly.

ignition 01-07-05 10:10 AM

I'll be sticking to my current DVDs. I honestly think this new format will not be embraced by the puiblic, just like Laserdisc and D-VHS. Do I think it's a good format? Yes. Would I like to support it? Yes. Do I think the public is going to embrace it? No.. The public has invested too much into DVD, and I don't see the normal, everyday person going into Best Buy and rebuying their entire collection on HD-DVD. Now, the normal everyday personis the crux of the market, in this case. I don't doubt that a lot of people on this forum will be buying tons of HD titles, but that won't be enough.

People just now are getting into DVD, with lots of people just converting in the past year from VHS. A new format will not be popular, and I honestly see it going the way of D-VHS and Laserdisc.

DanishDVDfreak 01-07-05 10:20 AM

Hmm...how did Laserdisc "flop" exactly ? It became kinda obsolete after DVD, but I think that "flop" is a harsh word for it...Its been around for over a decade before DVD...a pretty long time for a flop I would say

No...Divx and EZ-D...THAT was a flop

digitalfreaknyc 01-07-05 10:23 AM

I see 8 I'd double dip on. Ugh. this is going to get ugly :(

Yes, I have an HDTV and YES it makes a huge difference. I keep thinking there might be something wrong with my DVD's because, well, they just ain't as clear as HD. I'd love to see anyone who currently owns an HDTV hold off on getting into this.

These are the same people who are buying HDTVs like crazy. It's very simple. Since the HD-DVD format is backwards compatible and will play the original DVDs, regular DVD players will disappear as soon as the price comes down low enough. Soon it will be like Progressive Scan. Originally, it was only on units that were $1000+, and now it's hard to find a unit that doesn't have it even for $30.

Its all gonna depend on backward compatibility of DVDs, price of media, price of players and so on.

D-VHS and Laserdisc are different animals.

I do not see this being a huge market at the beginning, but slowly people may convert.

ignition 01-07-05 10:26 AM

Sorry, I guess "flop" was too serious a word. How about not be embraced by the public?

Well, I own an HDTV, and I will not upgrade anything unless DVDs stop being made and sold.
