Yes - I get it every now and then. Often times I am asked if I have a certain DVD and when I say 'No', it's as if it's the most shocking thing the person asking the question has heard. Oh well, I don't much mind.

I'll be over 730 after today's purchases.
I wouldn't want anyone to buy me DVD's because of my method of purchase. I may not own something that I've been interested in at the moment, but if I see it at a good price, I'm gonna pick it up. It's not like a DVD is an ultra personal gift anyway. If someone doesn't know what to get me, just get a gift card. I wouldn't be disappointed or offended.
Although I must admit that I appreciate the socks and underwear I get for Christmas much more now than when I was a kid. Saves me from having to buy them myself, giving me more cash to buy DVD's.

I haven't heard to much yet, most of my friends are movie fans, as far as family I don't think they really realize how much I have since I keep them in a room that's not a high traffic area. I kind of like getting non-DVD stuff for Christmas like the above poster mentioned..frees up money for me to buy them on my own.
Right now I have to look into more shelving which is kind of annoying since I would rather spend the money on ..you guessed it DVD's.
What do people do who have collections and then get married or move in with girlfriends/boyfriends who also have movies...do you still keep a list of your own stuff, just in case you break up / divorce in the future?.. just thinking of maybe some amusing or non-amusing stories for custody of the collections..lol?

Well, my fellow employees know I have quite a few dvds (I don't know about *too many*). Every now and then when we're chatting, they'll ask me if I have this movie or that movie until they find one I don't have.

My wife thinks I have WAY too many and initially refused to buy me any for Christmas. She did go against her own words and got me a few cheapies, though. She also did not want me to buy any for her but she didn't mind when she opened up her Gone With The Wind: SE & a Duran Duran concert DVD. Heck, even my son got a few (Spongebob & Looney Tunes sets). Damn, I gotta find some way storing these things, they are all over my den at the moment.

Most people think I have too many.
Even I think I have too many, which is why I spent some time over Christmas removing about 100 DVDs from my collection, ready for sale in the New Year.
No-one would buy me a DVD as a present as the chances are I either have it already, or it's on order, or they'll buy the wrong version or region.
It's great being an addict isn't it.

I have had people tell me that, but now they are trying to catch up and are getting close. I have slowed down becuase I dont want to end up with too many. I am around the just under 300 but that counts sets as 1 from DVD Profiler. Its funny my brother in law who is younger and lives at home adds his parents DVDs to his collection just so its bigger and my friend bought his wife a bunch of DVDs for xmas for pretty much the same reason! i just add what I like and actually dont buy my wife any DVDs unless she specifically asks becuase despite our large collection she usually finds something on one of the movie channels? Go figure.
As long as its fun its all good, when it stops being fun, you stop. Till then true buying DVDs is better than some other things.

I'm a single guy and in my opinion the only person who would have any right at all to say I have too many DVDs would be a spouse. If you support yourself then you can spend your money on what you choose. I mean, honestly.....I wouldn't go to someone's home and say "You have too many Longaberger baskets", or, "You have too much money tied up in your gun collection"......that would be incredibly rude and none of my business whatsoever. Also, only a few very close friends know how many DVDs I have around me because as ChrisHicks said, I don't intend to become their personal Blockbuster outlet, and I live alone, well, with my 12 year old son, so there are many hours each day that my house is unoccupied......its a sad fact that people will break into your house and rob you blind.
I have tons of movies and music surrounding me, and I put them to use every day at some point. Where your heart lies is usually where you invest your time and money.

The few people who have spied my collection (about 400 titles) comment that's it's a large collection, but I dont' think anyone has ever said I had too many movies.

I actually didn't get any and haven't bought any in 2 weeks. Partly because I've been paying off my brand new Sanyo Z2 
On my days off I usually get in a movie or two (sometimes 3 or 4). It's relaxing and I like the ability to stop a movie and not come back to it for days sometimes weeks. With Columbia House not supplying Fox or Universal titles any more my buying will be more limited next year.

The biggest thing that when those "people" say that, is that they are thinking its just the movie. For me, its like (and i'll use Open Water as an example), its of course and first and foremost the film, BUT its also the informative audio commentaries (like I'm eager to hear OW's due to my love of low budget films and the possiblity of me learning that and doing it myself), deleted scenes, ect.
Take an older film where most of the crew is dead, something like the german film critics who recently did the M audio commentary-that's invaluable information you can't get anywhere.
Here's the big question: Well, most people, your average dvd buyer, don't care about them extras all that much.
Answer: That's why you don't get us owning all these dvds.

I've felt I have too many dvd, many of them are never watched, but "I might want to watch them in the future", and that makes me keep buying new dvds. Maybe it will slow down after I get married.

I try to tell my friends & relatives not to mention how many DVDs I have when we are together and meet new people, but they always end up doing so anyway and I get embarrassed (my collection is over 2000). My friends & family think its an interesting way to start a conversation and I think its an easy way for people to classify me as a geek & a real nutcase.

Anyway, I'm still in college (and also broke), so my collection is rather modest in comparison to other members here. Still, I do think I have too many DVDs. And most other people tend to agree with me. I now try to buy only what I consider the essentials and put the money saved to better use.

That said I have recently broke the 350 title mark and the only people who think I have too many is my father who ends up paying for most of them. But he gets some enjoyment out of my collection from time to time. But he doesn't have hardly any of his own, so when he came over for Christmas doings, and saw my new shelf system, he made a comment on how much money I've got tied up in my collection. But I'm like "so what...". He spends more money on cigarettes than I do on DVDs.

i dont mind ppl knowing what i have as long as i know they arent crooks or criminals which i know some, but i simply put it straight to them that theres probably no way at all they are "borrowing/renting" my dvds, simply because everyone is not careful at all and they dont seem to care about other ppls collections, unless of course they have a dvd habit like all of us. when you are investing money and time into something you love you want it to stay in the best shape possible. most of the time they understand.
but i thought i would share one thing on this thread that i forgot the first time around, my wife has simply stated that these days a mans dvd collection is now the mesurement for his "manliness"...its no longer the size of his.....but the size of his dvd collection. i found that humorus and in some ways true.

People think I have too many (especially my wife), but they still buy them for me (not at random, they take them from my wishlist, and I've never gotten one that was wrong OAR or anything like that). My wife even asked for a DVD for Christmas (which she got!)
