I was at Blockbuster looking at the trade in dvds and came upon something kind of odd the movie Waterworld in a cd jewel case. It had a carboard slip case over it with the art work. Is this how dvds originally were and then they changed them or what? Anyone know?

i had that a long time ago...these and some PD titles were in jewel cases...stuff like bruce lee and hitchcock silents....odd i don't see these used anywhere.

Universal did this a lot early on. Babe and Apollo 13 are two of the titles that stand out in my mind.

Some Japanese pr0n DVDs are still sold in jewel cases. No idea why.

Some very, very early releases were in jewel cases. In fact, the first disc I ever purchased - "Rock n' Roll High School" was in a jewel case, although it was later reissued in a standard keep case.

Also, for a while, some dvd's were released in a hard clear plastic case with a tray that slid out from the bottom. I think "Polygram" did this and a few PD companies. I still see some of those around every now and then.

When I first got my DVD player I bought three discs that were in jewel cases, The Shadow, Backdraft and The Serengeti. I actually like the jewel case idea for DVD's. They take up alot less room.

I had jumanji and one other one that i cant remember. They were two of the the original 10 I got free with my dvd player.

I remember on Amazon back in the early days usually you had your choice between the normal case or "Jewel" cases on movies from Universal & Warner Brothers.

Hmmm. Three that I remember are original versions of Hard Target, The Shadow, and Jumanji. Can't think of any others off the top of my head (just woke up ).

Now I'm assuming that by jewel case yall are talking about the ones that came in CD size cases.

The only one I remember seeing was for Back to the Future. It was a t Media Play and I remember seeing it and wondering why it was like that. I was also wondering why it only included part 2 and 3. Kind of odd. I wanted to get it, but $35 and looking kind of off I never did.

Now that I think of it, that might have been an import.

If you sent your DVD's back to universal to correct the BTTF framing issues, the replacements were sent back in CD jewel cases. Perhaps someone got his replacement discs without having to send the old ones back, or they sent him 2 copies.

Early Releases in late 97 and early 98 from Universal and Columbia were in Jewel Cases, I seen Backdraft, Hard Target, Shadow, Apollo 13, and also Air Force One which was one of the first major releases, Columbia was releasing them in Jewel Cases and Keep Cases at the same time, but dropped jewel cases after their 3rd release batch.

No guys, when I saw the BttF discs it was way before the current release.

I got my first DVD player the same year they came out-- back when you had to ask yourself if Divx was worth the extra $100-- and I saw the discs a few months after I got it. I also remember seeing Robocop CC during that same trip. At the time I wasn't too familer with Criterion (never had a laserdisc player) and wondered why it cost $49.99.

I remember i wanted to buy The Paper (the ron howard film) but didn't untill about 2 years ago due to the jewel case.

Do you mean the jewel case the size of a regular keepcase (aka Super Jewel Box) or the size of a regular CD jewel case?

Some places like Japan still releases certain DVDs in CD jewel case, but I don't think US ever had since before day 1 the major studios wanted to make a visual difference between DVD and CD cases in order to avoid people buying DVD and thinking it would work in a CD player, so I heard.

My copy of Jumanji and Imax Tropical Rain Forest both came in cd sized jewel cases.

I remember getting a copy of Jerry Maguire in a jewel case and wondering about it.

I have a copy of backdraft. I had purchased it used with a group of movies when I first started buying DVD's. I always wondered why it came that way.

I had Jumanji also, I replaced it with the SE, and gave the jewel case one to a relative. I actually don't see them used much either, which is odd.


And shawagg, you either saw a VCD (movie on a CD, VHS quality) or a bootleg.

Yes - way back when. Within my first 10 purchases back in 99, I received a Ranma movie and a Tenchi movie in the CD sized jewel case with a slip cover. They have both since been replaced with standard keepcases.

I think that Japanese companies have finally done away with jewel cases for mainstream films at least (but you can still find older stock DVDs in jewel cases, like some of the Toho Godzilla DVDs). But, as I mentioned, there are still a few adult companies that stubbornly stick to them for some strange reason (maybe they still have a huge stock of jewel cases that they are trying to use up before they make the change)
