Won’t watch is too decisive since there are always exceptions. There are certain genres/ movies with certain actors that I’m extra wary of and will wait for word of mouth or reviews to decide:

In general, I avoid: Julie Roberts, Meg Ryan, Adam Sandler, Steven Seagal, Claude Van Damme, Bruce Willis, Demi Moore, movies that are primarily filled gratuitous violence, lame teen flicks, slasher movies, horror flicks, whatever genre MY BIG FAT UNDER THE TUSCAN SUN WEDDING is considered.


I’m just curious with the following list of actors that have been posted are any of these movies exceptions?

Tim Allen- galaxy quest?
Tom Hanks- Saving Private Ryan
Tim Robins-Bob Roberts
Susan Sarandon- Rocky Horror Picture Show?
Sean Penn-Fast Times at Richmont High?
Woody Allen-What's New, Pussycat??
David Spade-joe dirt? OK maybe not, but I like joe dirt
Clive Owen-the croupier?
John Wayne-Red River?

Why these particular actors? You will be missing out on some very good movies. I just watched my new Sling Blade LD last night and it was a great movie. Tim Robbins has also appeared in some very good movies like Shawshank, the Player, Bull Duram. I thought Hanks was very good in Philadelphia and Green Mile but don't like most of his stuff. Sean Penn/Susan Sarandon were great in Dead Man Walking.

I pretty much can watch anything. I like all genres, including musicals. I don't really like slasher movies with the exception of a few like Suspiria and Halloween that I think were particularly well done. I also don't really like most summer blockbuster movies with the exception of Superhero movies which are a very guilty pleasure of mine. An area that I need to explore are Music/Concert DVD's and documentaries.

I usually avoid movies based on true stories. I have enough reality in my life.
In addition kids movies (anime/animation not included) and religios stuff.

I refuse to watch most of what comes to the local cinema now.

I also refuse to watch the final two LOTR movies; the first one was excruciating enough, I am sure I can find something better to do with 6 hours of my life.

The only two on your list for me are Tim Allen and Woody Allen (I guess I just don't like Allen's). And for me, there are no exceptions. I've never seen Galaxy Quest (or any Tim Allen movie or TV show) and I've never seen a Woody Allen movie. I have also never seen an Adam Sandler movie and if I'm watching a SNL rerun and he shows up, I change the channel.

On the other hand, I'll watch just about anything with Sean Penn or Tim Robbins in it.

I've been REAL slow to get on the Allen bandwagon, but I agree that "Tiger Liliy" is a good recommendation since it's not your typical Allen picture.

Oh and I'm assuming that those of you who are mentioning "Anything with rappers" are referring to urban comedies,horror,and action stuff. Because there are exceptions like:
Three Kings
Six Degrees of Seperation
Indian in the cupboard (Yes, the Native American is a rapper)
Coffee and cigarettes
Monster's Ball (Mos Def, not Puffy)

No musicals and no westerns for me. The movies may be well made, but I can't get into the subject matter.

I'm open to pretty much anything else, though I watch very little comedy (except TV series). I'll give any actor a chance, since they usually make at least one good movie in their life. I'm kinda suprised at the anime reaction, but truthfully it's not easy to find good anime movies or shows readily available to watch. There's a lot of crap out there.

I watch almost everything (and with the size of my collection you can believe it :). Two exceptions -
Black action movies (I can not understand what they are saying and without subtitles ...)
Any movie that has an animal dying in it (I have 10 cats and a dog and having seen this so often I have strong problems watching it)

I also have been having problems watching disaster movies. I live about 10 miles from the World Trade Center was and I keep hearing those fire engines that morning going towards NYC and the attack helicopters going over the house that night

I too, would appreciate getting an idea of how and why you come to ban every single film starring a particular person in them? Could you all elaborate?

I am 'disinclined' to see movies starring say, Tim Allen, but I would never say 'never'. The actor in a particular movie is less important to me than how good the movie is (who directs it, screenplay, cinematography, etc). If Tim Allen is in a movie and can't act, that's one thing, but if he does a credible job, what exactly is the problem?

I guess the closest I can identify with this attitude, is my feeling about Tom Hanks. I really don't like looking at that guy, and watching him trying to pee with a bladder infection for 2 hours in GREEN MILE was just about the most horrible thing I have ever watched. However, I put up with it, and in general I thought the movie was pretty good.

Westerns (except for Deadwood on HBO)
Musicals (except Christmas-themed ones)
Fantasy - Lord of the Rings and similar stuff

I won't watch 'The Godfather, Part III'. I accidentally saw a little bit of it once, and it was so bad that it hurt. I happened to get to see the ending, and I won't give it away for folks who haven't seen it, but suffice it to say it betrays everything about the first two.

Other than that, I'm willing to give almost anything a shot.

well, I did mean What's New, Pussycat? written by Woody, it was a tongue in cheek example, What's up, Tiger Lily is a much better suggestion.

I have seen it, and it doesn't change my opinion of his abilities. Keep in mind that Robot Monster is one of my favorite movies, so it's not like I'm passing judgment on people who like Schumacher's films! :)

I won't watch movies that I know are depressing. Why seek out a depressing movie? I don't get it.

Or movies that are based on a real event. I already know what's going to happen! Like Titanic. I KNOW the ship sinks at the end. And I know they are going to ham it up. So I refused to see it. Same thing for Pearl Harbor. I know what happens in it! Why bother? Yeah, there could be some story in there, but it's just something someone made up based on a real event. And they're just going to make the story depressing.

really? i'm the total opposite - i'm pissed off when (stupid) animals survive. i was pissed that the dog survived being shot in 'payback' or when the dog just jumps to safety in 'independence day'. it's also very annoying when characters go back into the burning house to get a pet or stop on their way to safety to pick up a cat...

i don't hate animals or anything, i just think we care more about mindless pets then actual people. how many people 'died' in independence day? - but the dog lives, hurrah!

I avoid movies with Tom Hanks. I have always thought he was over rated and his movies just do not appeal to me. I also try to avoid Jimmy Fallon and Adam Sandler movies.

I skip the big animated movies like Shrek, Finding Nemo, The Incredibles, etc.

i'm interested also, but just guessing my inclination is that the poster doesn't agree with the political views of some of them (robbins, sarandon, penn).

You people kill me. Some of the lists of what you will not watch cover a broad range of movies. I am not a big fan of lots of things, but I will watch almost anything once. The only movie I ever saw that was just plain horrid is a Criterion - The Unbearable Lightness of Being. I would rather watch anyhing than that. It is hard to find a movie that has nothing positive in it.

The only thing I really avoid is anime - I just can not seem to get into it. I have watched some and if someone came over with one and said it was brilliant I would probably try again, but I never seek it out.

I also love the attitude that if the general public likes it, there must be something wrong with it. Around here, a fun movie that does not tax your brain to watch it, is a crime. Damn, I like to see stuff blow up and here stupid jokes and be amused occasionally. Sometimes I want something serious, but there are times when serious just makes a bad day worse or more miserable.

Just that fact that you classify dogs and cats as mineless pets indicates how you really feel. Each one of my animals that I have owned over the last 40 years has it own unique personality. Therefor they can not be classified as mineless
