Glad I checked this thread. Looks like this one is a supplement to the current DVD instead of a replacement. I will probably wait for this on to drop to $10 at Target same way I did with Jersey Girl. Seems a so so release overall (no real interest in the uncut version), but I would like to see some of the new extras at some point.

PixyJunket 07-22-05 01:35 PM

I like the cover, yellow is nice. The X was stupid, they did that joke already thank goodness they stuck with 10th Anniversary.

Same here. Seems more like a supplement. So dumping one for the other seems more like a lateral move instead of an upgrade.

kevin75 07-22-05 02:27 PM

you know, each day goes by and i get more and more disappointed by this release. :(

The Valeyard 07-22-05 02:50 PM

I'm actually digging this cover. I originally had no plans to pick this up but when the price drops to Wal-Mart Bargin Bin prices, I might relent.

UAIOE 07-22-05 11:25 PM

I'm interested in the extended cut....but yeah, its a suppliment to the already released disc.

Someone just needs to make a custom version of the orginial cover but instead have the back list info about doth discs.

Matthew Chmiel 07-23-05 04:01 AM

Wow. That cover art looks like shit. :thmbsdwn:

They can't just take the original CE artwork and replace "Collector's Edition" with "10th Anniversary Edition" or some silly shit like that?

Skoobooz 07-23-05 08:41 AM

It wouldn't be noticeably different. Even though the current version is OOP, people who already own it and didn't know about this release would just pass by a similar-looking cover in stores...in theory. I personally like the current cover, but this isn't terrible, I guess...just different.

fumanstan 07-23-05 09:00 AM

The cover is practically the same as the Collector's Edition cover though, outside of some color differences and its no longer set as a comic book cover. I don't see how anyone can think this one looks terrible and think the previous one was good.

Quack 07-23-05 11:56 AM

What the hell is the deal with the Rogue Pictures in the top corner....I don't remember that at all.....

Because it looks more elegent and prestigious? It could've been worse, we could've gotten the R2 DVD art...

Remember, Gramercy originally released the film to theaters, Gramecy then being Universal's independent distributor. However, Universal's two independent distributors now consist of Focus Features and their sister company Rogue Pictures. Focus releases the more "high class" films such as Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, The Motorcycle Diaries, and The Door in the Floor whereas Rogue Pictures releases the "lower class" films llike Shaun of the Dead and Seed of Chucky. Focus and Rogue are kind of like Miramax and Dimension.

How do you figure? Most of what was on the first disc (INCLUDING the theatrical cut) is here, plus a whole new cut and new features! How does that make this a supplement? Other than the fact that it's a 2 sided disc, it totally blows away the old release!

Here's the new scoop: it IS a single disc. DVD Answers was correct. BUT, it's a TWO-SIDED DVD

Here's how the ONE DISC/TWO SIDED DVD lays out, thus far. Naturally, this is subject to change.

I'll mark what's new (stuff made for this edition) and what's old (from the previous DVD release).

SIDE 1

THEATRICAL CUT (OLD)
· ORIGINAL ON SET CAST INTERVIEWS (NEW)
· A BRIEF Q&A WITH KEVIN SMITH (NEW)
· THE ERECTION OF AN EPIC - THE MAKING OF MALLRATS (NEW)
· BLOOPERS (NEW)
· VIEW ASKEW'S LOOK BACK AT MALLRATS (OLD)
· FEATURE COMMENTARY (OLD)
· THEATRICAL TRAILER (OLD)
· THE GOOPS "BUILD ME UP BUTTERCUP" (OLD)

SIDE TWO 2
· KEVIN AND SCOTT'S INTRODUCTION (NEW)
· MALLRATS RE-CUT (NEW)
· MALLRATS CAST REUNION Q&A SESSION (NEW)

There are also three new Easter Eggs buried in that disc as well. Sadly, due to space constraints, we had to lose the optional angle on the old commentary track from the previous "Rats" DVD, and there's no new commentary track either (again, we ran out of space). Regardless, this new, 10th anniversary special edition is PACKED!

I think the audience would agree with me there?

When asked what happened to the deleted scenes, Kevin playfully remarked "The deleted scenes are back in the movie, dumbass. That's what the recut of the flick on Disc 2 is all about."

When asked why there wasn't a new commentary, Kevin replied
"We never recorded a new commentary track. Mos (Scott Mosier, producer/editor) and I just felt like everything there was to say was said in the old commentary track, the new doc, the Q&A, and the new intro to the new cut."

So, it looks like we're missing a few things from the original DVD, like the multi-angle viewing option (hey kids! watch Kev & co... talk into mics...) and the introductions to the deleted scenes (God bless Vincent Pereira).

Those who wish to ask questions to Kevin directly or simply wish to keep up with the DVD news can visit the thread at View Askew:

I was present at that q&a, and thoroughly enoyed it. I think you will too. Most everyone involved told some good stories.

Most, not all. I for one liked the multi angle on the commentary track and that is gone. Not to mention the extended cut will be made up of most of the deleted scenes already on the first disc. Sorry, but this is not a replacement at all for the first release. I'm interested in some of the new extras, but this is a $10 purchase tops since I'm keeping the first release.

I prefer to just have the deleted scenes separate instead of just slopping them into the film for some bogus director's cut.

GuessWho 07-23-05 09:26 PM

I'm of the opinion that this IS a replacement.

UAIOE 07-24-05 02:34 PM

I didnt like the fact that on the orginial release you had to sit through an hour or so of watching other deleted scenes and Kevin talking just to get to a particular scene you wanted to see.

I'd rather the deleted scenes have been seperate with an optional intro.

Now you get to sit through the whole movie waiting for each deleted scene.

Yeah, but it'll have chapter stops so you can just choose the closest one ;)

Yeah...but i love the movie.

And having the scenes re-inserted interests me greatly.

Perkinsun Dzees 07-25-05 02:50 PM

I guess I'll be hanging on to my original disc and maybe double dipping if the new release goes on sale for cheap.

I noticed that now. I didn't think to look back there because the dates were earlier than Kevin himself posted it. I figured he was the first.

I still can't believe its dual-sided rather than a 2-disk set. What cheap bastages.
