You know, it's was always believed that making DVD-18s was more expensive than two dual layer discs. Did the learning curve get so good that they're now cheaper than the packaging for two disc sets?

I remember the first Terminator 2 release was supposed to be a DVD18, and partway thru the run they had to release some with two DVD 9s.

Maybe technology has gotten better, though now I'm thinking about how just because you can do a thing, doesn't neccesarily mean that you should do a thing. I am extremely carefull with my DVDs, but it's still possible to smudge or scratch them.

Isn't Canada getting two discs?

Well, a DVD-18 means they don't have to create and print artwork for the disks, cuts down on packaging size/material, etc., so I don't know.

I'm sorry if I missed this, but I couldn't find it in this thread. Will there be any extras not carried over from the original release?

Rypro 525 08-22-05 10:09 AM

the only thing i could think of are the alternate Jason Lee opening monologes, and the commentary video.

What would be considered to be the definitive version of this movie? The original theatrical cut or the new extended version? If ALL of the deleted scenes added back in, I feel like this is less about Kevin Smiths original vision and more likely an excuse to make more money. Im pretty sure Kevin Smith would agree that the majority of those deleted scenes are horrendously bad.

milo bloom 09-01-05 01:57 PM

I thought a lot of the cuts were studio enforced and this was actually KS going back and making it closer to his cut?

newsaskew seems to think the new cut is definitive

While other studios are double-dipping with supposed "new versions" of their films on DVD, the extended cut here is truly a re-envisioning of Mallrats, and in a way you have NEVER seen before. Scott and Kevin went above and beyond with this one, surpassing even this reviewer's highest expectations by putting together a new cut of the film so beautifully that you'd swear it was always this way. Is it the one way I'll watch the film from now on? I'd say so.

Will wait for this to get down to $10 (or less).

I'm still getting it on release day. :)

Any word on the possibility of this being a 2-disc in Canada and whether or not said Canadian release would be bilingual covered in nature? :) Im guessing the answer will be no and yes?

darkside 09-15-05 11:00 AM

My main DVD players haven't liked the recent Columbo, Bela Lugosi or Hammer film DVD-18s. I'm going to wait awhile on this one and see if this one has playback issues with anyone. It still seems like more of a $10 purchase to me anyway though the extras seem decent.

Hmm, I don't know...if it includes that original abhorrent, dull as paste opening sequence, I doubt I could ever consdier it as the definitive cut. I'm very curious to see this version, and will promptly buy the title on Tuesday, but I'm inclined to think after one viewing, I'll be watching the theatrical edit from that point on (if true, it'll be the only title in my library with an extended cut that I eschew for the leaner version)...

I was just going to ask that. Looks like we may have our answer above, and I'll be ordering it from them as I did the Orgazmo DVD.

My only question now is, is there any reason to keep the old one other than for the visual commentary?

Rypro 525 09-15-05 07:17 PM

if you liked some of the jason lee alternate opening monologues from the deleted scene's, they aren't on this new dvd

mike01 09-18-05 01:58 PM

seems like a no brainer to me for someone who doesnt own it.

Snowmaker 09-20-05 10:08 AM

Any reports from anyone who bought it yet?

Does it have an insert?

ryuryu2949 09-20-05 10:11 AM

Patience is a virtue I do not possess, especially when it comes to one of my 5 favorite movies.

My bad, I didn't think any posts were made regarding that since the actual release date.
Anyway, I just noticed something interesting, amazon's listing for this says it's 2 discs, but we already know that the US version is in fact a flipper, so I'm getting less expectant of dvdsoon...
