Universal is releasing a 2-disc Anniversary Edition of Apollo 13 on March 29. The first disc looks to be the same disc that was already released, and the second disc contains the IMAX version with a DTS track.

We get DTS on an "open matte/pan and scan"* and edited version of the movie, but not on the original theatrical cut?!??!

* = Apollo 13 was shot in Super 35, but all the visual effects were composed specifically for 2.35:1. Meaning the non-CGI scenes would be in an "open matte" of sorts, whereas the scenes with CGI would be pan and scan. Make sense?

I honestly can't figure out why they're including an "IMAX" version to begin with. Wouldn't it have been cheaper (and better for the consumer) to make the 2nd disc the OOP DTS edition? Then at least you'd have the full film, correct aspect ratio, etc.

Well, I need to pick this up since my previous disc died and no longer works (along with Dragonheart which I've already replaced).

I plan to get this because I don't have a DTS encoder on my DVD player.

I just bought the THX laserdisc of this today, at a thrift store for $7. I'll just convert it to DVD. Good enought for me.

Worst re-release ever.

Regarding the aspect ratio. I have seen the P&S version before(in school). It is far from 'open matte'. Many sequences,not just effects scenes suffered extreme cropping.

The best example is one of the test sequences,with all three guys in the practice ship. Only one of them was onscreen,while a tiny bit of the arm of the other two people are left onscreen.

well,f me sideways! I held off on the last version for this one, and it looks like I got burned. I should've known Universal would screw this up. Looks like I'll have to get it anyway for the same first disc and just enjoy the 5.1 track.

Seems that Universal is releasing this in two versions, one widescreen as mentioned and also a separate full-screen release with the same 1.66 imax version on disc 2. Universal is so lame. I don't think I'll ever hold out for a Universal re-release again.

What's the deal with the IMAX version? Is it just a shorter cut of the film or is this a whole different doc? Either way, I'm glad I have the DTS version and I'll probably skip this release as it does not add anything to what I already have. Strange marketing they've got over there.

Sounds like a lame re-release. I waited forever to get this disk and thought I was out of luck finding the DTS version. But my local Blockbuster had 2 of them brand new and I picked one up during the $8 trade in deal.

I'll "settle" for the original movie with DTS track.

What do you expect from those A'holes at Universal?

I don't see how this is 'making the most' of anything. They've created a disc that no one will watch. Why would anyone sit down and watch disc #2, which is edited for time and cropped? When they can put in disc #1 from the very same set, which is the full film.

Unless you happen to have an IMAX screen in your living room, this seems like a product without an audience.

I had hoped when NBC bought them from their damnable French overlords that we'd see an improvement. Instead, they seem to be moving in exactly the opposite direction.
