Looking to buy some shelving...
Don't know if such a topic fits here, looked at the DVD & Home Theater Gear forum and the majority of the threads are about HDTVs. But since this forum gets more traffic, here goes...
I have recently run out of DVd storage...completely. I currently have shelves that are double-wide that can hold two rows of DVDs, but I don't want to do that because it "lessens the effect" of sitting there looking googly-eyed at your collection. What? You don't?
Anyway, I'm doing a little research on Amazon and found the following style that seems to be about right for my situation.
Leslie Dame 1500 storage rack
Dimensions: 63 3/4"H x 66 5/6"W x 9 1/2"D
My current rack is 64"H x 30"W x 12"D
So basically the new one would be about double the length.

It says it'll hold 612 DVDs. So it'll hold all of what I've got, and then some, hopefully.
So my question is, does anybody else have storage racks like these? And what do you think of them.

I've bought three Billy bookcases from IKEA that have a grey metallic finish and are 80" by 32" by 12" each. I even replaced the 6 regular shelves with glass shelves for each case and they look great! I end up with eight shelves on each one that holds about 40 single DVDs so if you do the math, I can hold almost 1000 DVDs total. I'm not sure if you're close to an IKEA (I see there's one in Schaumburg) but check them out online at www.ikea-usa.com. One thing - DO NOT order from them! Their shipping is outrageous - it's nearly equal to the cost of the items!

We do a lot of real-estate auctions and he's bought both of my current shelving systems for near nothing, ($5 for a rack that normally goes for $30, and only $25 for my big 6-shelf system w/glass shelves that would probably go for well over $100) so that's why he's hesitant about that $200+ price-tag.
We're gonna look around at some local furniture stores to see what we can find.

Had an empty wall, went to Home Depot, bought 8, 1"x6"x10' boards, 32 brackets (4 for each board). Easily holds my collection (currently at 1162 dvds). Have 2 shelves still empty! Total cost, about $120 bucks.

I need something soon. My DVDs have just about outgrown my rack.

I know you aren't going to be getting the Leslie Dame shelves, but I just wanted to chime in with my opinion of them anyway. I have 2 of those 1500 ones and I also own their 1000 CD rotating stand as well; they are all great. I have owned numerous multimedia shelves, but at this point I have only been buying Leslie Dame shelves because I have been completely happy with them. The sturdiness and quality are better than many other shelves I have owned. I'm not bagging on any other shelves or makers (especially Ikea), just saying that from my experience, anything from Leslie Dame is a good product.

Not sure if this leslie dame model is still available but I own it and did Craig S's modification to expand it:
Thanks to Craig S. from The Home Theater Forum for the following info:
"After assembling my first rack, the first thing I found out (which I had previously suspected) is that the 960 number is wrong. Out of the box, the rack can hold 630 DVDs (735 if you use the top shelf). "
Here's Craig's instructions on how to modify the rack to hold an additional 105 dvds for a total of 840 dvds:

I'm out of room soon too. I'm currently using the Sauder cd/dvd shelves that can be picked up at places like Suncoast for about 40 bucks a piece. Unfortunately, I have no room to put another one on the floor, so I've got to start building vertically. The Leslie Dame shelves the OP mentioned look nice, and the price isn't too bad, but they're a little wide. The Sauder's are only like 5.5" deep, just enough for an amaray or cd. I'm seriously considering getting 2 more Sauder shelves and sticking them on top of my current ones, and securing them to the wall.
Everything else I've looked at is either too deep or too tall or too pricey.

Well, my entertainment center is made out of plywood and other wood scraps from the construction of my entire room, painted to match the main color of my walls. It's also built into the wall kind of like a closet, taking space out of the room on the other side of the wall. So the color of my shelves only need to somewhat match the other wood furniture in my room. I have a wooden computer desk, and a wooden bedroom set. The set of course is matched, but the desk is not. So matching shelves is not all that important, within an acceptable margin of course.

That's almost exactly what I'm looking for, but oak won't work for me either. It would just not look right with my entertainment center. I'd love to find something similar though.

Another alternative I am considering is buying some more of these low cost book cases. And it would be quite easy to pick up extra shelves to increase your storage capacity.
Never found deals as good as yours, though! Those sound great!

Unless the units are sold at one heck of a cheap price it's hard to pass up just going to the local hardware store and buying the wood to build your own shelves. Stores like Lowes tend to sell laminated boards nowadays so if you don't want to use actual wood you can use boards that have a finished look before you take them out of the store. They also sell them in full sheets of 6-8 feet by 4 feet so with as little tooling as a circular saw you can cut them as wide as you like.

My cheap bookshelves are basically particle board and they successfully hold books just fine and those are far heavier. I would be satisfied with a particle board case for my DVDs that is of similar quality to the average cheap book case you can buy at Wal Mart. I feel DVD storage is one of the most outrageously priced products on the market today, actually. Even the particle board type ones you can find at Best Buy are not exactly cheap. They are more expensive than a full book case, actually.

The $5 deal was one of these which normally go for $29 on Amazon:

Boltz.com a tad exspensive but it looks so much better than cardboard and will last forever. I started with the DVD racks ( Mm-252x2 ) then got some spearker stands and a componet stand. Going to get a Bar and a mm26 when they have there next 20%off.

I have several racks, but there is one at Media Play that is black and on sale all the time for around 80 bucks normally 100. I think it holds around 500+. That is what I have and I plan to get another one. My only complaint is the base could be a little more substantial. Lot cheaper than the one from amazon

For those on a budget like myself, I recommend the LNT Home Latice DVD Tower. The price is $30, but can be had for $25 after all the 20% off coupons from Bed, Bath, and Beyond or Linens 'n Things. For only $100, I was able to store 600 dvds.
