It's two different kinds of shopping. When you go out and buy a movie the day it's released, you're going to the store for that movie (or to see what came out that week). You can't depend on what movies will be in stock used, or when a new movie will become a PVT, and it's questionable how dependable most previously viewed movies are anyway. [I've never had a good experience buying used discs at Blockbuster, though others have.]

For me, if I'm browsing for stuff, I'll go to Kim's, or Entertainment Outlet (less so on the latter, lately, because their used selection has been crap), because they'll have an eclectic bunch of used discs; Kim's even often has Criterions sprinkled in there. And they take care of their discs (and you can check it before you buy), so I'll usually find something very random that I'm glad to pick up at the price. But if I want the new disc which just came out, and don't want to wait, I'll buy it within a day or two of release to make sure I get the best price (because the sale prices end quickly).

This is to say nothing of the constant paranoia that something might be recalled just after release, because said paranoia is largely irrational.

I suppose this all goes back to the question, why buy an average, new dvd when you can usually find an exceptional, used one for significantly less.
Well, first off, if you want the new disc, you don't neccessarily want to wait until it's used; there's always a part of my mind that feels like I'm backlogged enough with older discs which I want, and I don't want to add to that list any more than I need to. But, also, it all goes back to the question "Are you shopping to buy a DVD or to buy a specific DVD?"

Granted, I'm working off a poor, college student's budget, but what drives the majority of people to purchase from BB/CC when there are so many quality films out there?
A lot of people have already got the older movies which they consider "quality" and are buying new movies which they also consider "quality". The movies I wind up buying used are generally things I'm not interested in at the new price but find cheap enough to spark enough interest to buy.

I suppose I already knew the answer to my original post, that people enjoy having a flawless dvd that they can call their own. To each his own, often times I feel that most of the joy of dvd collecting comes from the hunt for rare/hard to find dvds (often not stocked by major retailers). Finally, in response to taa455, by Schindler's List, I basically meant any elusive dvd that we would love to make a part of our own collections.
I'm not sure what you mean by the hunt for rare DVDs. Unless you're talking about a very select few like a Criterion Salo or The Killer, there isn't exactly that much in the way of rare DVDs. Of sure, there's plenty of stuff I can't buy at the local Best Buy, because it isn't stocked, but in those cases I could order online if I wanted.

If I wanted a major studio release, I would likely buy it on Tuesday since the sale price is best in that first week. Yes, one could wait until it becomes used or price drops, but that's true with any number of consumer goods. Why buy video games or CDs when they come out? Buying this earlier does cost a bit more money.

If it's not a major studio release, I'd still likely order it online. I wouldn't buy from Best Buy since they're pricing is not as good on such titles, but one can still pull a good discount on pre-orders of online material (and avoid tax and shipping costs).

Of course, one is also assuming that I don't have certain films. If I bought what I wanted when it came out, then there is nothing that I would want when it hits a used DVD store. Major title or indy film, I already bought it.

Finally, it's not that easy to get used DVDs of non-major films. Going to a used store is hit and miss, and not very convenient. There's a Walmart, Target, and Best Buy all within 3 miles of my home. There is no such used DVD place other than Blockbuster.

"there isn't exactly that much in the way of rare DVDs."

There's a great deal more than just those 2. In fact there are dozens of rare DVDs or out of print DVDs which are very rare to find. I guess I like the hunt and generally don't buy new on release date unlesss it's less than $10. I'd rather save $5-10 and wait a few weeks or months. More bang for the buck. Now, I wasn't always this way. I was the guy waiting in line on Tuesday eager for the new releases. But why buy a DVD new when I already have 30 waiting to be watched. If I ever get to the point were I have nothing to watch I may have a different mindset but I don't think that's ever going to happen. The "to be watched pile" is always getting bigger.

But to each their own.

Many people simply have a disdain or a phobia about not buying new, pure and simple. I have to agree that most of the used specialty stores are only slight bargains and in some cases no bargain at all, selling titles from $9.99 to $13.99......for that price I might as well buy on release day for $16ish. My hunting ground is almost exclusively the pawn shops which tend to see prices anywhere from $4 up to $8......that's alot easier on the wallet, but again, not everyone wants to go to stores of that nature. I'll also hit Blockbuster when they have their sales going on like this week. As has been stated here, the prices in the stores are plummeting for new DVDs as well if one waits a few months for the price drops.......I can name lots of titles I've seen in the Wallys bin going for $5.50 that I paid three and four times more for. My rule of thumb is I'm simply not going to pay over $20 for any single disc title- I'll just wait till I find it cheaper

I'd like to post another reason why I like to buy new.

I usually buy movies that have already been reviewed. So if it deserves my money then I buy it plain and simple.....

Buying it new counts as a real sale for that movie on DVD....whereas if I buy it used somewhere else the movie company doesn't see a dime or a stat for that DVD.

So supporting the films companies and the film makers I love do count as a factor when I buy new movies.

I used to get my DVDs new on Tuesdays, but lately I've been getting them used. Hastings had a great deal recently where if you bought on previously viewed dvd you would get the 2nd for a penny. They were all priced between $5.99 & 9.99. I was able to get all three Star Wars, Eternal Sunshine, Walking Tall, The Alamo, Big Fish, Mona Lisa Smile, Glengarry, S.W.A.T., Starsky & Hutch, Mean Girls and some other ones for about $5 and change each or less. They were bought in the span of a about a month. Not to concerned if the box is in mint condition. Family usually borrows them so I know they might get a little banged up. Only thing I buy new are box sets and pretty much only when there are good deals like the recent Amazon ones and some price mistakes from diffferent B&Ms.

Some of us don't sweat a few bucks. My time is far more valuable then searching used racks, or Ebay to save a couple/few bucks.

That about sums it up for me.
