FEARLESS in original aspect ratio ever?

I think that Peter Weirs' FEARLESS is a great film and its a shame Warner has never released it in its original aspect ratio.

I wish they would. I think it's an excellent movie. I've almost bought it a few times, in spite of the MAR, but I think this movie would be really screwed up by the full-frame presentation.

Actually, the widescreen laserdisc version of this title was in a 1.66:1 aspect ratio. Peter Weir seems to have shot several of his films in this AR.

For what it's worth...

I just popped in my LD to check and you are absolutely right. It's 1.66:1.

I had to check Witness also. Yup, 1.66:1.

As do I, but in a way, that makes it all the more frustrating--that means that Warner's already had a widescren master they could have ported over to DVD...lacking anamorphic enhancement and coming from a D2 master, it wouldn't have been the height of visual clarity by any stretch, but it would have still rated a meaningful step up from the current useless P.O.S. DVD...

I believe the current disc is, indeed, open matte.

By the way, I'd like the same question to be inquired regarding THE BRIDGES OF MADISON COUNTY...

Re: FEARLESS in original aspect ratio ever?

Can we maybe petition someone for a great version of this? Especially with Bridges coming off a recent Oscar win.

The end of this film makes me cry. I don't mean here and there. Everytime. It isn't just the remarkable music, a piece by Henryk Górecki, but also the deranged decency of Jeff's character. He becomes Christ-like. He comforts those who are probably about to die with no thought for himself. Jeff Bridges should probably have won an Oscar for this. Beyond the ending it's an extremely detailed and layered performance.
