I have nearly 300 dvds. I agree it is alot about having a collection that you like. The other factor is economics. Alot of the movies that I buy are movies that I did not see in the theater. For me and my wife (kids left at home) to see a movie is about $15 (probably a conservative figure). I can buy a dvd on release for usually $15.99. The dvd is often times better in content and I can watch it over and over, loan it to family and friends, etc. The point is that for my $15 I can own something or just have a memory of it.

For what it is worth...DVD profiler estimates that my avg cost per dvd is between $8 and $9 (forgot the actually value right now).

Anyway, that is my personal perspective.

Here is the bottom line. Whether you have 1 or 1000... as long as they bring some enjoyment into your life... then it is all worth it in the end.

Another view. To me Films/DVD's are small pieces of history. When I watch a DVD (Star Wars let say), I can remember what was going on at that time in my life and what I was doing. Exactly like a photograph.

As of right now, DVDaf says I'm clocking in at 140 titles. I enjoy all of my discs and hope to have more someday. But having 300 isn't my concern right now, pick up what's good and I know I'll like forever... or at least until a better format comes around. As long as you like the disc, I don't see why having a lot of them would make it crazy. Most people have huge shelves of books in their house, and nobody seems to be confused about that.

right on, Master. been saying the same thing in this forum for a few years....defending the library and all that jazz. finally got sick of proclaiming my love for films and moved on. I used the books and library defense many times....yet people were still confused. "you can't love everything you have" and "you just buy to have". what a riot. nobody EVER thought I was nuts at 20 years old....when I owned over 3,000 LP's. they just thought it was cool. but own over 1,700 titles in dvds.....and some see you as a clown.

I don't buy to impress anyone but when I talk to other collectors online via chat program it always ends up being a contest of who has the most instead of a normal conversation.

I'm up to 542 right now and getting ready to make my weekly Wal-Mart midnight run. I hate going out and I'd much rather have my favorite movies at hand when I need them. I have a few bad movies here and there but I can't ever think about getting rid of a movie. This again isn't because I'm interested in high numbers....I just know there was a reason I bought a certain movie. There was something that drew me to a movie and I fear that when I get rid of a movie I'll have an urge to see it again that will just drive me nuts.

The biggest part of my collection has to be TV shows. The shelf I use for my shows has maxed out very quickly. As I stated in the Buffy Season 7 thread I'm not home to watch TV when most people are and I'd rather buy a season set and watch it in a day or two than catch the show on the air and have to wait for months to see a season. TV shows are my real weakness anymore since I watched SOOOO much growing up but I'm not sop desperate that I would buy crap like the cut Alf episodes. I loved that show growing up but I will not make it a part of my collection with the cuts there were made to the episodes.

367 + 23 en route from DDD. Not really a lot, considering that I've been collecting since 1998.

still under 300 here, but quickly approaching... I'm currently at 220 or so, but this is my 2nd collection... I had 180 about three years ago, and sold it on eBay for a car (!!)

I fluctuate around 450. The last couple times I got up around 475, I started looking through my collection to get rid of some dead weight on eBay.

I have to agree with gutwrencher and others.. im *trying* to build a libary of films I like or want. I wont limit myself just cause people think im crazy or what ever. As long as i like and enjoy every damn disc I buy, who cares?

DVD IS the format for me, and im looking forward to building up my collection for many years yet.

I just hit 800 last night, and am quite satisfied with my collection.

At this point, I have almost every catalog title I'm interested in and I have no desire to expand my collection beyond the occasional new release. Maybe one day I'll flesh out my exploitation/classic monster/TV-series collections, but, those genres have extremely low replay value for me.

I've been at just over 1100 for the last 2 months. I guess I have about 20 that I have never viewed (Saving Private Ryan, Shindlers List, most are war movies) because I have yet to be in the mood to see them. The rest I have seen at least once. I have a couple of 'Collection Packs' which I view a movie now and then. As far as TV goes, I watch 2 shows, Enterprise and Scrubbs. I can not stand commericals. I do not go to the movies more than 4 times a year. I tend to watch 2 hours a night. For November I've been stuck in FARSCAPE land. Next month I should be in BUFFY land.

I'm @ around 1450 or so and find myself in pagansoul's situation as well. I can't tell you how many times I have gone into the HT and said to myself, "I don't have anything I want to watch"! I've been doing a Star Trek Voyager thing for a bit as well as Spaced. These shows tend to keep me happy during the week. The weekend however, is another animal all together. Sat Nite is definately movie nite and we try to get in as many as possible before sunrise.

I have somewhere over 200 dvds, but not quite 300(I assume..have'nt counted it in a year or two).

As for how I count my dvds? Simple,I count the number of films(or tv shows..which is rare) I own...not how many discs I own. Since that is rather pointless with the many 2 disc sets and numerous disc tv sets.

I will do my best to not let my collection go over 500. Sure that may seem impossible. But if I only buy the absolutely must buys(ie-all time favorites),and a few blind buy/obscurities here(which I always wanted to see...after careful research). My collection should stay fairly tolerable and easy to dig through.

Of course you never know,I may eventually go over 500. But at the rate I have been buying dvds since 1999. I think just getting over 200 dvds today is great. Since I have not gone overboard with dvd buying. Though sometimes it feels like I have, lol.

Nice. Do you ever lend any of them out?

After a while you tend to lose count...well I did anyway.
