Mummy Legacy Collection Problem
 

I just picked up all three of the just-released Universal Legacy Collections (Mummy, Invisible Man & The Creature) at BB. I always open the disks in my car before leaving the store to check for scratches. The second disk in the Mummy set had an abrasion on the exposed side (it's a two-sided disk) possibly from the paper insert. I returned it and got another copy. I opened that one and it had the same abrasion. I brought that one back and I opened a third package in the store. It also had an abrasion on the second disk but this time it was on the other (protected) side. They wouldn't let me open the last one that was on the shelf so I got my money back.

Is anyone else having problems with this set?

Well I just noticed mine had an abrasion as well, just thought maybe it was just from the paper as well. As far as trying to return it, I haven't tried yet. And the crappy part is, they haven't recieved the 'creature' monster legacy collection set yet....

You'd think they'd wrap a Mummy disc better. Go figure.

This reminds me of the problems I had with the first set released.

I did not pick up the new collection today because I knew in my gut I would be doing the return thing over and over again.

Not sure why they did not learn from the first collection?

I picked up mummy legacy at BB, but have not opened it yet.
I would like to hear the results from others who opened theirs no matter where you bought it..
Are they all damaged? if so I will be calling Universal this week.

No abrasion here but the first Mummy disc was scratched all to hell! My Invisibal Man disc had a scratch on it too. DAMN IT! You'd think Universal would have learned from the first series. Back tot he store I go.

I bought the Creature From the Black Lagoon Legacy collection today. Very nice set, no problems here.

Well go figure! Returned it, and the minor abrasions are still there. Granted, the disc should still play just fine because they're very minor indeed. BUT, when I pay money for something, I expect the disc to be 100% clean of any kind of damage, no matter how little it may be.

Costco had unblemished first wave legacy sets. As well as Star Trek:TOS sets. (while other stores had scratched discs, broken hubs, etc.) It would not surprise me if this 2nd wave of legacy sets are also free from defects.

Picked up all 3 sets at costco, the mummy disc 1 has some abrasions on it, looks like whoever packaged it set the disc in then moved it around the tap till it fell in place. Other 2 sets was fine

Dunno. For me right now: No busts, no buy.

Why did I order these from Amazon? I knew better, but I still did it anyway. Its going to be a hassle getting a decent set.

Well your stubborn attitude isn't going to persuade Universal to go ahead and make sets again. I can already see they're going to have a big problem with The Mummy sets, trust me, I've had quite the adventure tonight trying to find a decent set ANYWHERE. And they'd have big problems with a box set being returned instead of just one set at a time. Universal instead of improving their products, are just making an awareness to where they might be able to save some money in packaging and returns. If you want to the movies themselves, buy them. There's no reason you shouldn't buy the films if you want to watch them. If you didn't want them that bad, then so be it.

I ordered the first set from Amazon, no problems at all. Picked these up today, slight mark on the second disk (Mummy set)--I'll most likely play it before trying to return it, since it's really small, and I got the last set at one Best Buy (and they were sold out at the other).

I just opened up my Mummy set and it appeared to have scuff marks on disc 2. With my eyeglass cleaner I wiped them and they came right off.

Picked mine up at Costco tonight. No scuff marks. There was some (pretty heavy/thick) dust on disc 1, but I wiped that off with a soft cloth, and both discs are perfect.

Update: I went to another BB in another state to get the remaining Mummy set. That one had a minor abrasion on it but I kept it. I watched the first film on that disk with no problem.
But there is still something curious. Only the Mummy seems to have this problem and that set is $5 cheaper than the other two at BB. Coincidence?

Just how big is this abrasion?
I suspect eye glass cleaner polished the mark so it was hard to see (for the laser and you) . It seems so far that only/mostly BB discs are damaged in the exact same way.
Something tells me BB is getting rid of a bad run for Universal.
I still have not opened mine. I might return it and buy it at target or walmart. Its 5$ more but BB can be real jerks about returns/exchanges.

I would still like to hear waht others see. If Target/walmrt/circuit city/ Deepdiscount/ Amazon.. If these guys also have scuff marks on disc 2. It might be a wasted effort.

Good job! Now no one in your area can purchase it at that store! Good goin gettin anal on something that wouldn't even had affected the playability of the DVD!

The mark is about a half an inch across.

If I'm paying my good money for something, I expect it to be perfect. All of the other disks from that set are. This type of imperfection may not affect the player I have today, but I expect to own my DVD collection for decades. A player I own in the future may have problems with an iffy disk. The way I see it, I did all the customers in my area a favor.

Just got mine and the Invisible Man set. Haven't checked it, though. Was it $15.99 at BB for anyone else? I was wondering why the other two cost $19.99, while that one seemed to have a first week sale.

My mummy set had a scratch on disc 2, but I'm just dealing with it. Other two sets were fine. Creature was perfect and Invisible man disc 2 just had a smudge.

My guess –was- that “the mummy” has the modern-day re-makes backing it thus BB might expect higher sales if the dvd were priced-to-sell. But no one else and I mean no one else is doing this. I find it very interesting that BB has a way lower price on Mummy, yet none of us got a clean disc from BestBuy. BestBuy is so huge they can could indeed except an entire flawed production run and get a price break from Universal to unload them quickly. The proof will be as everyone reports in (with the store they used) so we can see if BB is selling a bad run of discs.

In contrast to my Creature disc was opened with fingerprints found on it and my invisible man is not perfect as well. They both came from Target in Minnesota. None of those defects were alarming, only a little disappointing. I will play them through and exchange at target’s quality CS counter if there is a problem.

The only dissatisfying feature is that the film synopses are given on a thin insert that comes loose inside the package; it would have been preferable to have this information on the slip cover or disc case. Viewers should also check out The Invisible Man Returns to make sure their copy isn't flawed; mine had a hitch in playback just over an hour in.

bought all 3 from BB...and none require first-aid.:D

My Creature Legacy looks fine, but I'll watch them tonight and tomorrow to see if any playback erros occur.

I really wish Uni would address this problem, its ruining the fun out of owning their releases.

Yeah I got all three yesterday from Best Buy and they all work awesome!

But did anybody else notice the crazy pixleation and edge enhancement during the special features? Maybe it was my player (?), a Sony Vaio, but during the various docs and photo galleries the image is very pixleated. This happened across all three of the new Legacy's.

The movies, I'm happy to report look fan-freakin'-tastic!

I watched all of My Creature collection last night and had no problems with the special features. The weakest transfer is Revenge Of the Creature, i noticed several black vertical lines during almost all of the underwater scenes...the rest of the movie looks fine.

Huh, I'll hafta' find another player to try 'em on. I've never had this problem before. (Famous last words.)

I got Invisible Man and Frankenstein from Costco. Neither have any scratches on the discs. When I picked my copies up, I rotated the package and noticed there was one loose discs in almost every one! There were three boxes of these DVDs so I moved them aside and picked up a copy from the bottom most box. Checking in those, I didn't hear or feel any loose discs inside those packages. I presume many people pick up the packages to read the descriptions and some discs get loose from the handling.

On another note, I noticed the Invisible Man insert fits nicely on top of the second DVD with the book type case closing nicely. However, on Frankenstein the insert is larger and won't fit inside it unless I trim it a little, Now it's sandwiched between the case and slipcover.

All the Mummy films had been released as Double Features ( now OOP) so most "collectors" probably already had the Mummy series. Hence a $4 price drop at BB ?

One ting I noticed on the Inv Man and Mummy is the main menu screen doesn't have the eerie sound effects and music...dead silence but they are on the 2nd menu screen after you pick the movie. The first series I swore it wa son the main menu...no biggie...I'm about to pop Creature in...

Exactly why is Universal making all of these collections double sided discs? Wouldn't it be easier to make them Dual Layer? I want to buy all of the monster collections but I really hate double sided discs.

I don't understand the disdain for the double-sided discs. Yeah, they don't look as nice and they can be annoying to flip over, but I guess I'm one of the few who likes being able to buy four or five quality films with extras for the price of a single new release.

It's quite simple. double-sided discs require more careful handling.... unless you don't mind fingerprints on the playing surface.

With some of the sets they have used double sided discs that still had one or two of the sides dual layered. They seem to want to keep the Legacy sets as two disc sets regardless of how many films are in the set. The A & C sets have 8 movies on two discs requiring all the discs to be DVD-18s. With the low price Universal is charging I really don't see much room for complaint as long as you don't get a scratched up disc in your set.

You know, digipacks do get a lot of harsh talk thrown their way, I mean, they look great, and with those 'fold em up' box sets, they really save space. But with digipacks, there's a consistancy to be inconsistant. And combining digipacks with double sided discs, is a huge no no. Most of your consumers aren't the dvd aficionados you find on the internet. Most of your consumers are just your average people, coming and going, buying what they please whenever they please. But when you're a dvd aficionado and you have a very very large collection, with numerous box sets, you know what's best for you when you buy a set. I mean it's the same thing as the old 'keeper vs. snapper' debates. Keepers were sturdier and more reliable for keeping the disc in place. Well, same thing here. The digipacks aren't that reliable but as of right now you don't have consumers who buy dvd's in high volume as often as some of us do, to really know that these issues exist. But over time, they'll begin to complain more and more as they did with snappers. And with double sided discs well, I can't tell you how many times, I see the top sides of the discs have abrasions or scratches. They either come from the manufacturing process, the paper slip advertisements that move around in the casing on top of the disc, or even from people who manually push the discs in the digipack leaving their thumb prints on it. It's nothing but carelessness when a dvd's instructions clearly states to only hold the disc from the inside and outer edges, yet the employees who are providing service to sell these products don't follow that procedure. Some of these issues wth the 'double sided nightmare' wouldn't happen if they just used a dual layer disc, that had a picture on the top part of the disc... because that top part is not important on a single sided dual layer disc! How many times just in the last couple of weeks alone... I've gone through dvd exchange horror. I mean, not just the monster legacy sets (which ARE the worst experiences), but anything in that plastic backing digipack packaging with a double sided disc. And trying to do an exchange at the store you bought it from, I usually happen to notice the same abrasions or scratches. Those DVD's got shipped together, which means they were created right around the same time and probably had the same manufacturing defect happen to them as well. So what happens then? With DVD law prohibiting 'money back' from any openned DVD's, you don't get your set in some instances because they don't have any of your sets left in stock, OR you've exchanged through whatever they had left. You can only get store credit OR some places will make you either contact the manufacturer or wait until they get the same product in stock again... you're out of your money you could have spent on something else that week while you also waste your time to get jerked around by the manufacturer or stores. I've had it with digipacks and double sided discs and I know a lot of people have as well. There's no reason this set couldn't have used single sided double layered discs. It would pretty much erase the huge problems with this set... or with any set. These companies need to realise they should stop economizing and giving us cheaper quality packaging, and spend a little extra. Because in the long run with all the issues that cause so many returns and complaints, it's going to save them money as they wouldn't have to throw away as many sets.

I hadn't had much experience with them until recently. The only thing I had up until this summer were the Mystery Science Theatre 3000 double sided (which have given me no problems as of late).

This summer I was elated to learn Universal was putting out Abbott and Costello sets. Well, my joy soon tunred into a nightmare as I had to constantly return and exchange discs due to errors. It became such a headache.

Thankfully when I purchased the first Legacy box I had no issues. My luck, sadly, did not hold out. My first Mummy disc here had a huge scratch on it. The second one had a smudge which I figured ot be a finger print. I took it back and the new one is clean (but haven't tried it yet to see if it will be fine as well).

The Invisible Man, however, as my thread states, was another nightmare as I brought it home and found a large smudge and small scratch on it. I called the store to see if they had copies left and they said they did not but when I returned the Mummy set they had a copy set aside for me. Of course, I hadn't brought it so I had to return the next day to get it. I checked it in store, of course, and it seemed fine but when I played it I got the hitch problem on the Invisible Woman. So, now they are out of stock and I have to go to another location. Not having a car, this is $5 a bus trip each time to get these discs exchanged.

I guess when you buy cheap you get cheap. I'd much rather Universal up the prices of these sets and make them 3 or 4 disc collections then the pain you get with double sided discs.

Exactly. It's a shame when manufacturing issues have to eat more of YOUR money. Where a 15 or 20 dollar disc will end up costing you 25 or 30 dollars due to shipping charges for mailing it back to manufacturer. And hey, even if you HAD a car, you're still wasting your precious gas which is now so expensive. I remember not too long ago I bought a Dragonball Z dvd which was supposed to have some Captain Ginyu episodes on it, but instead had one of the movies in the discs memory. Yet the cover of the dvd said otherewise, as well as the case. I couldn't return it to the store as they didn't carry it anymore.. .and the manufacturer wouldn't pay my shipping because 'the store got the credit for selling the dvd'. So out went 10 dollars, just to be able to watch a disc that shouldn't have had a defect in the first place. You know it's bad enough when you have a 'bad batch' get shipped to a store, but when the whole manufacturing line sends out the same defects pretty much everywhere.... it's a huge problem that really should be addressed as big as the Back To The Future problem was. Because all in all it's still a widespread issue that's wasting peoples time and money. But we continue to deal with the same issues that could have been fixed since the first monster legacy collections.... when Universal SHOULD have fixed the issues.
