Netflix may be lowering prices...

Just a few months after raising prices, Netflix looks like it will cut prices in order to compete with rival services. Netflix stock took a beating on the news.

philo 10-14-04 07:03 PM

The company wrapped up the quarter with almost 2.23 million subscribers. The cost to acquire a subscriber was $36.97, up from $31.81 in the year-ago period.

Netflix warned in a statement that it "expects the business environment to become increasingly competitive in the coming year," cutting its typical rental rate -- three discs at a time, with no monthly maximum -- by about 18 percent to just under $18 a month.

In June, the company had raised the price of that standard plan from $19.95 to $21.99.
In that article Netflix mentioned the possibility of Amazon entering the online rental business though Amazon wouldn't confirm their plans. I was surprised to learn they own the IMDB.

Chris Lanphear 10-14-04 07:17 PM

Surprised, eh? Despite the fact that every single page on IMDb has an Amazon logo at the bottom of the page that reads: "An Amazon.com company."

:D

rich-y 10-14-04 07:32 PM

Looks like they have ALREADY lowered their price!

... but, there's a catch!

Here's what it says on their website:

------

Just $17.99 a month.

Up to 10 DVDs a month. NO LATE FEES!

Always have up to 3 DVDs at home.

------

So, to get the lower price you have to limit your viewership to 10 movies per month.

I'm curious what happens whe you reach your monthly limit. Do they cut you off immediately (like a bartender to a drunk) and stop sending you movies until the end of the month?

can't say that i've ever scrolled down that far. but now i can see the similarities in the two pages' designs and layouts.

Here in (Somewhere) ;) it takes a few days to get and return our films anyways, so I probably only rented ten a month on average.

I'm quite tempted to resubscribe.

Good news, I may have to finally sign up.

Where did you see this? When I go to the website, it shows the $19.99 price, and I don't see a link to any other plan.

Interesting. I see $21.99 at netflix dot com. Do I smell a rat? Variable pricing?

I see the current $21.99 price on the main page and on the membership program page there are only options to change to these plans:

8 @ $49.99 (Unlimited)
5 @ $33.99 (Unlimited)
3 @ $21.99 (Unlimited)
2 @$14.99 (Max 4 per Month)

I can't find any mention of any new lower priced plans.

DVDTalker002 10-14-04 10:25 PM

I hate these pricks. They charge way to much.

Huh?

Get 3 movies a week and you end up getting 12 movies for $22 on the month, that's under $2 per rental. If you think that is way too much then...

The 14.99 plan is new to me (4 max sucks though)

Were Amazon to enter the game....holy crap, they would mutilate the competition. Amazon has EVERYTHING.

nightmaster 10-14-04 11:19 PM

In my opinion logistics has alot to do with it as well. Netflix has a strong, strong distribution base at this point whereas the others don't....for example, when I use Netflix my home distribution center is Indianapolis, about 80 miles away. I tried the trial month for Blockbuster and it was Lansing, Michigan which is easily three times that distance. Service was terrible. I see about a 5 day turnaround with Netflix, whereas I see about a 10 day turnaround with BB- which is pathetic. I emailed them asking them to address this problem and they said my home center can't be changed but service will improve in a few months. While I realise that BB is new to the game, they've had several snafus already and thats not the way to keep new customers.....sending movies in any order they choose from one's cue, horrible ship times, long waits for way too many run of the mill titles. Amazon is probably watching BB to see how they fare in the rental market before they jump into the fray. If they do drop their prices, so much the better though :)

Sure Amazon has Everything for sale - but are they going to open multiples of EVERY disc to rent out? Granted, they could probably do well in this arena, but just because they have everything for sale doesn't mean they'll have everything for rent.

CarlitoBrown 10-15-04 04:24 AM

Ok, I've just obtained today's Variety.

They're reporting that Amazon is indeed entering the business and Netflix is lowering it's price to 17.99 (effectively erasing any profits it had made)

They also mention Netflix working on a video-on-demand deal with TiVo next year.

SRotblat 10-15-04 05:47 AM

I just looked and it was 17.99.....

philo 10-15-04 06:35 AM

:D Yeah, I never scroll down that far either, just type in a title/actor and go. Can't say I visit the site often except to dig up the name of an actor I don't recall.

If there's a 10 film limit then its a waste for me considering Blockbuster delivered more than that with the free rentals. I do like the ready availability on most of the films they carry at Netflix though.

brooke789 10-15-04 07:42 AM

mine stills says 3 out for 21.99 per month....

where are ya'll seeing the new price?

RussG 10-15-04 08:35 AM

I just looked at their site and it says $15.99 for 3 at a time and unlimited number of rentals.

SRotblat 10-15-04 08:46 AM

yup I too just saw the 15.99 3/unlimited deal and jumped on it -- better than the 17.99 I almost went for last night

its right on their main page....

matome 10-15-04 09:01 AM

Shows $21.99 for me as well. :(

nemein 10-15-04 09:09 AM

Still says $21.99 for me too. What I want to know though is if they plan on changing the prices on any of their other plans. Has anyone heard anything? At this point if it really does go to $15.99 it would be cheaper to get 2 3-out plans (to different addresses ;)) than to continue w/ the 5-out.

flashburn 10-15-04 09:09 AM

Seeing the $15.99 price with IE, and the $21.99 with Firefox. I went ahead and emailed them to see if they can lower the price on my current 3 out account.

nemein 10-15-04 09:14 AM

$17.99 - IE
$19.99 - Netscape 7
$21.99 - Mozilla
$21.99 - Opera
