Very clever reference, Forum Troll. Whenever I saw The Village announced, I thought it was an adaptation of The Prisoner... I wonder how long till Hollywood decides to have a shot at that.

Spoiler:
At the very least, if you must, rent it. That way you would have wasted four dollars instead of eight dollars like I did.
I will refuse to buy it unless it comes out in a totally different cut than what we got in the theaters. I hated this movie for the same reason I hated the updated Stepford Wives (that movie falls apart at the end as well).
And for the record, I am a HUGE fan of M Night and think all of his movies since Sixth Sense have been getting better and better. Then I saw this and that ended that streak.

I've really only liked Signs and Sixth Sense... Unbreakable was ok until the cheesy end.

It wasn't bad. It was deeper than the posters here would give it credit for. It was a movie that had a brain and the symbolism wasn't as accessible as his other movies. Again, it wasn't his best movie but it was certainly a worthy film in a summer of worthless films.

I enjoyed this movie - but with a lot of reservations. If there are some substantive extras, I'll probably pick this up right away, but if it's pretty much bare bones or skimpy on bonus features, I'll probably pass until I get it used/price drop/however.

I agonized through this movie as well. I liked Sixth Sense and Signs (although the ending to that one left me a little cold and rolling my eyes), but I just thought this movie was boring and (dare I say it) predictable.
I am almost embarrassed to say that I suspected the "twist" almost the whole movie but just kept thinking that there had to be something more. I was wrong. This would have played better as a Twilight Zone episode or something.
Also, was I the only one that was annoyed by the fact that the blind girl could get around better in a forest than I could with sight? She ran around like she was a one-person GPS system.

I may pick up this movie or may be I'll netflix it to make sure I want to own this title to see how well this works in repeat viewings. I did enjoy this a lot more than most it seems, and I thought Bryce Dallas Howard did a fantasic job in her first big role.

. It was a sheer and utter mess from that point forward and quite anti climatic because before they reveal the "twist" they reveal it in another way that lessens the impact when it should have been greater. I don't know if that's as clear as mud, but I don't want to give away too much.

I might pick this one up just for the Bryce Howard/Joaquin "Don't Call Me Leaf" Phoenix scenes. They were so good in their roles, I really wish the movie had just been about them and not the rest of the village idiots.

Upon retrospect, I like The Village a lot more now than I did after I left the theater. If anything, it was beautifully photographed and had a good sense of pacing (I love films with a slow build.) The film is weakened by some questionable/pointless plot devices and some really weak acting (I like William Hurt, but exactly when did he get blown in the face with zombie dust?)
I'll be picking this up for sure, but it's my least favorite of Shyamalan's films (Unbreakable > Sixth Sense > Signs > The Village.)

Everything you said I completely agree with.
