BTW, is it true the rumors I've heard about changing the "all under heaven" translation to some more generic phrase in the subs for the US theatrical release/DVD?

i also hear that "Hail" (as it was in the original subtitles) was changed to "Storm" in the Miramax sub's.
spoken in mandarin, it's "Daa Feng" (literally, "big winds"). I think "storm" is closest in translation than "hail" is.

Here another review. The reviewer said the transfer a mixed bag.

Have they changed the cover for the R1 release?
Last night I saw the commercial for the DVD on TV and the cover looked different from what it was shown before.
The cover shown on the commercial is similar to what has been shown with Jet Li and Zhang Ziyi (at least she kinds of look like her in her worst day) plus now it the face of Donnie Yen at the right of Zhang Ziyi and I think it was Tony Leung on the left of Jet Li.
Maybe this is a Canadian cover, who knows since the transfer will still be the same unfortunately.

I watched the DVD this morning. The transfer is pretty good, I'd say average, theres a lot of grain in a lot of shots, and its not super sharp. Its ok...I'd give it a B.
The DTS sound on the other hand is reference! Thunderous and subtle. Awesome DTS track!

Are there two different versions of this disc floating around?

i have a question - is this movie alot like crouching tiger hidden dragon, although i really liked that movie, it did not seem like a movie that could be watched over and over again so i got rid of it. I am thinking about making a blind purchase of this movie but want to know if it has repeat value, thanks

I'm sure you'll get differing opinions but IMO it definately has repeat value. There are fantastic fight scenes and the actors do a great job.
The epic look of this movie is breath-taking. It's such a beautiful film with the vibrant colors and lush cinematography. The soundfield is immersive. Everyone who I've shown the movie to has been blown away.
I really like Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon but between the two, I'd throw in Hero first.

Maybe it's too early to tell yet as obviously nobody has the DVD in hand to review. Just wondering outloud as whether or not this warrants a repurchase for me.

I've had this DVD for over a year. This is the ONLY version I need.

best part is that the Region 0 version's been out forever (April 2003) and it's a better version than Harvey Scissorhands version (well, besides the non-translated text at the beginning and ending of the movie, easily remedied a quick internet search).

There's a good chance the slipcover will be gone, but it's just the same artwork as on the case so it's no big loss.

I got mine without a slip cover. It was a present for my birthday, I believe, but it was not pre-viewed. This would have been in February. That would suggest the slip cover was limited.
