my guess would be if you don't know anything about it you most likely won't like it. this isn't your typical movie that could be seen on HBO or MAX.

give us an idea, what is the goriest, most disgusting movie you have seen? we may be able to judge by that.

I was planning on buying this down the road, maybe on one of those days where I don't have anything specific I want to buy but I wanted to just pick up something new for the collection. However, because of the limited number of these being released, I went ahead and ordered through DDD, so hopefully that order will go through. In the emails I have received from them it has been listed as "in stock", so I hope that's true.

Just how small a number is 11,111 in terms of a DVD release? What I mean, is how small is it when compared to the Anchor Bay LEs and that sort of thing?

I saw this flick years ago, and while I can't say I enjoyed it, I did like it for some reason, on some sort of level.

Robert, you do know they do DVD reviews on this site?

Here's the review that'll hopefully answer your questions:
http://www.dvdtalk.com/reviews/read.php?ID=18351

The most disturbing aspect of the film, for me, was the several animal killings because they are real and very graphic.

It's definately a movie and not a documentary. The reason I bought it (haven't received it yet) is I am just curious to see what all the hub-bub is about.

Assuming the movie isn't very good (and the reviews rate it low), I'll probably unload it on ebay, hopefully making most of the money I spent on it back.

most mainstreme critics rate it low due to the animal killings show in the movie (they were done for real), and the realistic looking killings/rapes.

Don't forget how it's not all that good of a movie either, and probably nobody would even be talking about it if it wasn't for the animal killings and the "realistic looking killings/rapes".

Speak for yourself. Even if the animal killings were fake, and the killings and rapes looked "fake" (whatever that might mean - I don't think they're already any more or less real than other Italian genre films of its caliber), I certainly would still be talking about it. It has an amazing score (the theme is a standout among Ortolani's masterpieces), and, among Italian jungle films, it is shot extremely well with a unique plot structure. Even without the animal killings, it is a standout among Italian jungle films, and even a standout among all Italian genre films from the ten-year period from mid-70s through the mid-80s. Unlike so many Italian genre films of the time period, it innovates on almost every level, rather than simply doing a cheap copy of the theme du jour. It also manages to be modernly self-referential (with its inclusion of Africa Addio-esque mondo footage, complete with Ortolani at the conductor's podium) in a way that Italian genre cinema seemed to be oblivious to - Deodato saw the larger picture while it was still being created. It brings the audience dread not from marauding groups of zombies and cannibals, not from gangsters having shoot-outs, and not from sharp-toothed sea creatures; it frightens the audience by presenting humanity at its worst. Deodato makes the entire affair elliptical by first accusing Italian filmmakers of being depraved, and then proving it by doing so himself (and while I suppose the animal cruelty may be a necessary element in this trick, it is not simply for its shock value).

But perhaps the film is easier to enjoy if you're not just introduced to it as an animal-killing shocker and actually have a taste for Italian cinema of the period. It may not offer much of anything to you, but there are other people out there...

DJ, good post for the most part, I can definitely agree with your points... EXCEPT.... great score?? I felt like the intrusive and annoying music wasn't that great. I guess everybody, including myself can have wildly varying opinions

Well, it is a rather popular score, as these things go. There was a limited edition CD release that sold out almost instanteously (and has been bootlegged ever since), as well as an isolated soundtrack on laserdisc.

I agree with all your points in your two posts including those about the score (but then again, I'm somewhat of an Ortolani fan).

In general, Euro cult films of this era are an aquired taste. If you have a good exposure to, and are a fan of such films (Italian genre films in particular), you will appreciate CANNIBAL HOLOCAUST more. If you are more of a mainstream film fan, and don't have a solid grounding in Euro/Italian genre films, I could see how you might find a film like CH kind of lacking. I'm a fan, though.

Exactly. I love jungle-cannibal films period. Take out the animal slaughter, rape and pole-up-the-ass, and I'd still like it very much...and of course...own it.

.. EXCEPT.... great score??
I love this score. I've even whistled it during work...but then I'm a huge fan of the film from way back so I don't know what to tell ya.

And yup...I bought the soundtrack as well, which I try to do with MANY of my Italian faves.

got #7264/11,111 at Borders today.

they had 3 copies, and the other 2 had really bad floaters/rattlers. when I was shaking the DVDs, the guy who was working music/movies started yelling at me and told me there was a plastic case inside, that I didn't need to be doing that.

Tower Records didn't have this in stock near me, so I'm happy I was able to find it at Borders thanks to the poster that mentioned the floater problem.

I bought a copy from Europe or something a while back and in my opinion it was as graphically violent as I was told. The only thing that I really didn't like about the movie was that the animals killed in the movie were really killed and I found it too much to handle

I ordered this from DDD on 10/29/05 and I just got the shipping confirmation for it. Once again, for DDD!

I just have to worry about floaters now. I hope it's not a DVD Holocaust for me too.

DVD Maniacs, mentions that there are 7 easter eggs on both discs total. Has anyone found them yet?

I'm really interested in one they mentioned where the filmed the re-release of the movie in 2001, with before and after interviews.

Received mine from digitaleyes today.
Disc 2 was loose but had no scratches and also plays fine, however disc 1
is defective. In the trailers section it always freezes up and eventually stops playing entirely. Bummer. Hope I get perfect replacement DVD without any probs.

Somehow you seem to have lost the real point of my reply, which was to mock the reasons given as to why "most mainstreme [sic] critics rate it low". Sigh... You're also focusing on my use of the term "real" (which was also a direct quote from a previous reply).

Sure, fans of Italian genre pics and jungle cannibal flicks may love this picture, but there is nothing about it that is going to appeal to a mainstream critic.

you too? I've been whistling off and on for the last two weeks or so.

I know I've noted this before, but my laserdisc copy of the film actually has the soundtrack on the disc's analog track - too bad it's not included in this new ultimate DVD edition.

haven't watched the docu yet, but is there anything on this new edition that talks about the legendary non-filmed piranha scene?

Placed an order through Deep Discount; considered waiting until the 20% sale, but with a small run, I didn't want to risk it. Also set aside one at work just in case there's a problem with scratched floaters on my copy. This is a blind buy for me; all the great reviews and talk in this thread convinced me. I figure if I can make it through watching Aftermath unscathed, I can handle -- dare I say, enjoy? -- this one.
