Droids, Ewoks, other Star Wars specials!

All Nov. 23:

Droids
Ewoks
Caravan of Courage
The Battle For Endor

MSRP you say? $14.98!!

Mike Lowrey 08-25-04 11:36 AM

Yep, just saw this on TVShowsonDVD.

I may pick up the Ewoks movies and the Droids series, but IIRC, the Ewoks cartoon was geared toward the young kiddies.

WillyShatsWig 08-25-04 11:39 AM

Fox have announced the release of the 2 Return Of The Jedi ewok spin off movies The Caravan Of Courage and The Battle For Endor for US DVD release this November:

With next month's release of the 'Holy Trilogy', it was inevitable that 20th Century Fox would soon announce the release of everything else Star Wars releated that had not yet made it to DVD. November 23rd will see the long-awaited release of the two Star Wars ewok spin off movies Caravan Of Courage and The Battle For Endor.

From what little detail Fox have supplied us with, it looks as if this will be a double-feature pack, with both movies in one set, have no extra features, and a very low SRP of $14.98.

Also announced for release on November 23rd are the 1980's Star Wars cartoon TV series Droids and Ewoks. We are yet to receive any further information regarding these two titles.
You can find our article here.

PopcornTreeCt 08-25-04 11:44 AM

Sweet, I was gonna get these anyway but the price makes it even better.

Daytona24 08-25-04 11:45 AM

While they are not nearly as good as the trilogy I cant wait to pick up the two Ewok Movies, I can finally toss the VHS tape that I had them taped on! Probably pass on the two cartoon series.

freudguy 08-25-04 12:09 PM

I had heard these were going to be released, it's good to know a date. I will definitely pick up the Droids cartoon as I remember it not being too bad (then again, that was around 20 years ago). The Ewoks movies & cartoons are geared towards little kids but I have a 5 month old daughter that may appreciate these one day. With a Star Wars Geek for a dad and also an older brother in the same boat, it will be good for her to have these to join in the geekdom ;) (or so I keep telling myself, I think it's just that I am an obsessive completist and NEED to have all the SW DVD's....even the Holiday Special ;))

Some Prequel defenders make the same case for the Original Trilogy.

:D

Mike Lowrey 08-25-04 12:53 PM

Actually the second Ewok movie was pretty good.

Ranger 08-25-04 01:30 PM

Good news. It has been a long time since I've seen those movies.

greatjedi 08-25-04 01:43 PM

I can't wait! I'm looking forward to sharing these with my kids. My 5 year old son loves Star Wars almost as much as his old man does. :)

guywall 08-25-04 01:51 PM

Never saw these when they came out. (I know, I'm not as good a Star Wars geek as I want to be).
Since I have young kids, I'll be able to justify adding more SW stuff to our house to my wife!
Thanks for posting.

Artman 08-25-04 02:32 PM

I don't get it - shouldn't the droids and ewok cartoons be on atleast 3 discs? I think their were 14 or 15 (counting the great heap special) droids eps and over 30 ewoks eps.

Sure the price is nice, but I guess they didn't put much work into them.

edit: I guess they'll just crunch them all on a double-sided disc. Hope the pic quality is ok...

Shannon Nutt 08-25-04 02:36 PM

No "Star Wars Holiday Special", No Sale! ;)

It looks like the Ewoks and Droids cartoon DVDs are just two randomly selected episodes rather than season sets. That's pretty stupid.

digitalfreaknyc 08-25-04 02:48 PM

Woah. Who said anything about 2 episodes each? I don't think so.

bboisvert 08-25-04 02:53 PM

I'm sure there are more than 2 episodes... but the "double feature" on the cover sure is confusing. That doesn't really make much sense...

I assumed they'd just include the complete run of both shows. But now I'm not sure...

Uh, huh? I don't think this is the case.

.....and I've got the Holiday Special, don't you? ;) (DVD burners are great :D)

I do, much to the dismay of some of my friends...

bboisvert 08-25-04 03:04 PM

Lucas should just release the Holiday Special. Give all of the proceeds to charity or something...

Skyler 08-25-04 03:46 PM

the Ewoks cartoon was geared toward the young kiddies.
Just like Return of the Jedi.

Over at the Digital Bits..

"Star Wars: Animated Adventures - Droids will include select episodes of the original 1985 Droids animated series edited into two feature-length films - The Pirates and the Princess and Treasures of the Hidden Planet (both 86 minutes). Star Wars: Animated Adventures - Ewoks will also include select episodes of the original 1985-87 Ewoks animated series edited into two feature films - The Haunted Village (88 minutes) and Tales from the Endor Woods (89 minutes)."

So looks like it will be select episodes, but I'm all in for the double feature Ewok movies.

littlefuzzy 08-25-04 05:41 PM

So the two Ewok movies were both originally for TV, and thus full-frame would be the original aspect ratio, correct?

Artman 08-25-04 06:01 PM

Lame about the cartoons... Of course, for $10 (or hopefully $7 or $8) i'll still pick them up.

Well, doesn't that just suck......

mdc3000 08-25-04 07:30 PM

The Droids and Ewok news kind of blows...I was hoping they'd release complete series collections... now, The Ewok Adventure movies, I am definitely getting... I LOVED THEM as a kid... LOVED THEM. One of my more anticipated dvds of the year!

Correct.

squaresoft7 08-25-04 08:23 PM

whats the deal with "caravan of courage" is that some new way to rename "The ewok adventure" cause i don't even remember that title at all?

bboisvert 08-25-04 09:11 PM

Caravan of Courage is what the film was called (well, subtitled, actually) in Europe (where it was released theatrically). For some reason, I see the title a lot in the States too... even though it was never called that here.

I have a bad VHS copy. I'd buy the DVD just for the cartoon portion and to laugh at Luke in his make-up and Leia singing. rotfl

Lokimok 08-26-04 12:21 PM

Is anyone familiar enough with the cartoons to know by the titles what will be on these discs? I know some VHS tapes were released years ago. Maybe these are the same?

Boba Fett was featured in an episode of Droids - I would think they'd want to release that one - & stormtroopers & an Imperial officer were in at least one episode - maybe more.

Season 2 of Ewoks had a very different look & feel from season 1. I wonder if we'll get a "movie" from each season. & will it have both theme songs?

TK-421 08-26-04 12:42 PM

I love this cover for the holiday special:

Even if 100% went to charity, I'm not sure I would waste money on the holiday special.

Class316 08-26-04 02:38 PM

I’ve got the Holiday Special on DVD and it comes WITH the original toy commercials integrated as they aired! Can’t beat that. And it’s a good quality DVD (well as good as something of that nature can be).

Also, a hammer won’t help Lucas anymore (thanks to the net).

I also have all Droids episodes. A total total shame the cartoon DVDs won’t be complete. Guess I’ll stick with the versions I have. Might pick up the Ewok movies if they’re $5-$6 each.

Dazed 08-26-04 03:11 PM

My friend has the Holiday Special on DVD. Its sooo painful and funny.

Just looking at Carrie Fisher and thinking how much drugs she must have taken prior to her scenes, its amazing she is still alive.

Sounds like you get both of them together for $14.99 MSRP. Pretty good deal, actually.

Really? So if both are $8 on DDD it would be pretty sweet (despite the fact that they're about as painful to watch as the Holiday Special).

Three New DVD Double Features Take Viewers Back to a Galaxy Far, Far Away: ""EWOKS'' & ""DROIDS''

LOS ANGELES--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Aug. 25, 2004--
Favorite "Star Wars" Characters Headline Classic Animated Features and Live-Action Films Arriving on DVD for the First Time Ever

Lucasfilm Ltd. and Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment announced today that fans will soon get to journey back through time and space with C-3PO, R2-D2 and the adorable and resourceful Ewoks as they set out on adventures of their own in three new DVD double features. Available on DVD for the first time ever on November 23, 2004, each DVD includes two feature-length titles, which include "THE HAUNTED VILLAGE," "TALES FROM THE ENDOR WOODS," "CARAVAN OF COURAGE," "THE BATTLE FOR ENDOR," "THE PIRATES AND THE PRINCE" and "TREASURE OF THE HIDDEN PLANET." Priced at just $14.98 SRP (U.S.) and $16.98 SRP (Canada) each, these double-feature DVDs offer an outstanding two-for-one value.

The "EWOKS" and "DROIDS" animated features recount the adventures of these enduringly popular "Star Wars" characters before they appeared in the classic feature films. "CARAVAN OF COURAGE" received an international theatrical release and was subsequently broadcast on U.S. television in 1984, followed by its sequel, "THE BATTLE FOR ENDOR," which aired in 1985.

"There has been considerable interest in these titles from the core fan base for some time, so we've packed these DVDs with two features each to offer even more than they ever hoped for," said Jim Ward, Vice President of Marketing and Distribution for Lucasfilm Ltd. "We're excited to bring these productions to DVD and introduce them to a new audience of young fans."

Synopses:

"STAR WARS ANIMATED ADVENTURES: EWOKS" -- Two animated Ewok features recount the years before the Battle of Endor. Here Wicket is a young Ewok struggling to achieve maturity in his community. This leads to a series of adventures with his friends: Princess Kneessa, heir to the chieftain, Latara, the aspiring musician, and Teebo, the animal empath. Together, they help the adults protect the village from their enemies like Morag the Tulga Witch and their rival species, the Duloks.

"STAR WARS ANIMATED ADVENTURES: DROIDS" -- Two animated Droid features recount the adventures of C-3PO and R2-D2 before they met Luke Skywalker as they serve various masters over the years. As it turns out, their lives were no less hectic as they became involved in battles against gangsters, pirates and the Empire.

"STAR WARS EWOK ADVENTURES: CARAVAN OF COURAGE/THE BATTLE FOR ENDOR" -- Two live-action features document the Towani family's adventures with the Ewoks. The Towani family are stranded on Endor after their shuttlecraft crashes on the forest moon. Separated after the crash, the children, Mace and Cindel, must gain the support and trust of the Ewoks in order to rescue their parents who have been captured by a giant monster, Gorax. The Ewoks and Towani children go on an adventure to rescue the captured family members. Upon return to the Ewok village, an army of foreign invaders attacks them. Cindel and an Ewok, Wicket, escape into the forest where they meet Teek and Noa, who, like Cindel, also crashed with his Starcruiser on Endor. Together they must defeat the marauders.

No, the Ewok movies were all originally made-for-TV (even though they played theatrically in some non-U.S. countries). Everything was composed for 1.33:1.
