Back in 1980, Roger Corman's New World Cinema purchased the rights to the first two “Lone Wolf and Cub” movies, “Sword of Vengence” and “Babycart at the River Stix”, and merged them into “Shogun Assassin”. He was taking advantage of the success of the TV mini-series “Shogun”, which had recently aired, and by using “Shogun” in it’s title, was hoping to reap some of the mini-series success. I saw this at the Fox Theater is Portland, Oregon, back in 1980. One thing I always remember going to see this movie, across the street from the theater was a Scientology/Dianetics office. This guy came up to me and asked me if I would be willing to come over to the office to do a personality test. I remember pointing up at the theater marquee so he could see the title of the movie and said, “That’s all you need to know about me.” He turned around and left.

need to find martial arts movies.

Hey, I am looking to get some karate movies for my brother who really likes them. He mentioned the lone wolf and cub series but I dont know much about them. I know that Shogun Assassin is one of them and I'm assuming Shogun Assassin 2: Lupine Wolf is also but I dont know any other titles. I got the two Shogun Assassin movies online at www.MyOwnSite.com for only $4.99 each and they had alot of other movies so I know where to get them, I just dont know the titles. Can anyone help me out?

Go to this site to see the titles, but you can usually find them cheaper at DDD.com or Fry's.

These aren't Karate movies, fyi. If you are region-free, I highly recommend that you go to the international forum on this site and do a search under Shaw Brothers. Celestial puts out some outstanding Kung Fu movie for R3 and they are fairly cheap too. Great stuff.

Free Lone Wolf and Cub Box from Animeigo question...not the deal your hoping for.Help

Animego has not released shogun assasin in the states...are we sure they are the rights holder as stated earlier in this thread.

Animego has also seemed to discontinue the free box.

As others have mentioned, Shogun Assassin is not worth getting... you're better off opting for the first two Baby Cart films that it is adapted from. In saying that, one day it will make a nice extra when someone releases a true ultimate edition of the films...

i have all of the LW&C dvds as well as shogun assassin. LW&C are classics, but damn, i love the cheesy dub on SA.

Yeah, SHOGUN ASSASSIN is one of the few dubbed and drastically edited versions of a foreign language film that works well and stands up on it's own. I have the AnimEigo discs of the original Japanese versions, and they're great of course, but I'm still waiting for a decent release of SHOGUN ASSASSIN.

What the heck is Shogun Assasin II?
I believe that's an alternate title for LIGHTING SWORDS OF DEATH (an English dub of the third Lone Wolf and Cub film). This film also went by the name of LUPINE WOLF for some video releases, and after the success of SHOGUN ASSASSIN, it was retitled SHOGUN ASSASSIN II in some markets (even though it was technically released before SA in the US, but at least the chronological order matches the Japanese versions).

These films are excellent. Especially the last espisode White Heaven in Hell i think its called. Where he takes on an entire fucking army.....great stuff.

Well if you want to pick this up cheap then look on Ebay. I managed to pick up 3 of the movies for a total of $8.98, and shipping only came to a few dollars via Media Mail. Bargain. My collection is now complete and they are all great movies.

If I remember correctly, the image on the R0 disc is slightly squished vertically. It's in an aspect ratio of approximately 2.6:1.

I've watched several of the Animego Lone Wolf & Cub disks, and while they are great, the other night I finally talked my wife into watching Kill Bill II. She laughed out loud at Bill's line about Shogun Assassin being "Too long" and I explained to her about the history of LW&C and Shogun Assassin. In doing so I realized I've still not seen Shogun Assassin.

Anything further on what the best DVD release of of Shogun Assassin is? It doesn't look like any R1 releases exist.

so is this release http://www.deepdiscountdvd.com/redir...fier=ANI000503 the same as all the singular releases? or is there stuff cut out or anything like that? and is it worth the money to get this, maybe instead of all the others?

The same exact content as the individual Animego discs. The Animego discs are the definitive Region 1 discs of course. The individual discs are about 20 bucks a piece so its actually a good bargain.

AnimEigo just announced that they will be releasing Shogun Assassin in R1. From their website:

Shogun Assassin: The most famous samurai film in North America and probably most bootlegged one! You've begged us to do it for years, and we're giving it the full AnimEigo treatment - we're restoring it using our brilliant transfers of the original component films (Lone Wolf & Cub 1&2). We're literally going to replace every frame in Shogun Assassin with the exact same frames from the original films!

That sound you hear is the sound of everyone who bought the crappy bootleg editions weeping, with an overlay of gnashing of teeth from the scummy bootleggers!

Interesting news. I'll probably get it.

I may even possibly love the dubbed synthesizer theme music for this more than the original score!
