The Wong Kar-wai Collection -- 10/19

This is from Facets:

The Wong Kar-wai Collection

Dubbed "the most romantic filmmaker in the world" (Richard Corliss, Time), Wong Kar-wai brings a bold visual style to unique love stories set amongst the young and disenfranchised in his native Hong Kong. His feature debut, As Tears Go By (1988, 102 mins.), is the story of two street gang members - a young upstart and his mentor. When love enters the life of the elder, he contemplates leaving the streets for another life. A Cantonese Rebel Without a Cause, Days of Being Wild (1990, 94 mins.) binds together the lives of six young people in Hong Kong during the '60s. Chungking Express (1994, 102 mins.) is a dream-like valentine to youth and hopeless love that juxtaposes two offbeat stories with beautiful, mysterious women and colorful cops against a backdrop of a Chinese fast-food restaurant. In the neo-noir fantasy, Fallen Angels (1996, 95 mins.), a hitman is the object of unrequited passion for two women: the female agent who hands down his assignments, and an orange-haired punkette name Baby. Happy Together (1997, 98 mins.) uses gorgeous, saturated images set to an eclectic soundtrack of classic tangos, torch songs and Frank Zappa instrumentals to chronicle the stormy affair of a gay couple living as expatriates in Buenos Aires. All films in Cantonese with English subtitles.
Release Date: 10/19
List Price: $99.95

It looks like the titles will be released individually as well.

I'm quite surprised that Criterion didn't grab these...

I'm surprised Criterion didn't have a shot at these as well. In any event, this is a mandatory pick-up for me. Great release here by Facet's.

The info comes from Facets, but I'm not sure who is releasing the set since their website is always sketchy on the details.

Miramax produced the current Chunking Express disc; Kino, the current Happy Together and Fallen Angels.

I wonder if these three are being replaced with new editions or if the "Wong Kar-wei Collection" is simply a packaging of the current DVDs with the two new titles. This is a distinct possibility, and if true, I'll edit the thread title and first post to reflect it.

Anyway, the best news is that As Tears Go By and Days of Being Wild are coming soon, listing at $29.95 a piece.

YesAsia has a Wong Kar-Wai collection that recently appeared on their site - it includes the above, plus In The Mood for Love - but they are listed as 4:3.
These will hopefully be OAR. Also, France is releasing a box set about the same time as this one - but no English subs, apparently.
I think I'll wait for some reviews before getting too excited about this.

I was wondering this too. I doubt if Miramax no longer has the rights to CHUNGKING EXPRESS. Not sure about Kino, regarding the other two films though.

Agreed (as long as they are an improvement over the HK releases). But what the hell about my favourite Wong film, ASHES OF TIME??? It gets shafted once again. If Criterion could release any of these films, I pray to god its this one. (and judging by its trailer on the IN THE MOOD FOR LOVE disc, they could do a great job on it.

I'm happy to see that there will be an R1 release of As Tears Go By and Days of Being Wild. The Mega Star release of Days of Being Wild looks good, but it has perhaps the worst translated subtitles of any DVD I own.

I will be curious if these will be available separately, as well. Unless there is a significant improvement on the ones that are already R1, I might just pick up his two first ones.

And I whole-heartedly agree that what we really need is a good version of Ashes of Time. I'd love to see a Criterion version, cleaned up, with scholarly extras.

I didn't see this original thread and started a new one so my apologies first. I just learned of this box set this morning through the wongkarwai net website. From what I've read all of the discs will have new anamorphic transfers and should be available seperately as well.

Cduniverse has it listed already http://www.cduniverse.com/productinf...cart=201956228
$69.97 retail...not bad. I really hope to see more info on this soon.

No Ashes of Time and I already own Chunkging Express. Guess I'll be buying these separately.

I know you posted this link in another thread:
http://www.mastersofcinema.org/
but it says nothing about Ashes.

These are Kino (not Facet) releases. Both Happy Together and Fallen Angels are listed as "re-mastered" (which Happy Together certainly needs). They are being sold individually ($29.95 list).

I'm all for Ashes of Time being released. My Mei Ah copy really bites.

I already have all the movies in the set, so I wouldn't buy it. Well, if their Fallen Angels DVD is good, I'll get it. My copy sucks big time.

KINO ON VIDEO TO RELEASE THE WONG KAR-WAI COLLECTION FOR THE FIRST TIME ON DVD

Kino on Video is proud to release an unprecedented box set collecting five feature films from acclaimed writer/director Wong Kar-Wai. Releasing for the first time on VHS and DVD two of Mr. Wong's acclaimed early films (As Tears Go By and Days of Being Wild) Kino on Video's WONG KAR-WAI COLLECTION also brings new DVD editions of Happy Together and Fallen Angels, both specially re-mastered for this set. Chungking Express, made available by a special arrangement with BUENA VISTA HOME VIDEO, completes this unprecedented collection of featured films directed by one of the most regarded film auteurs of our time.

Each DVD (with the exception of Chungking Express) will be sold separately with a SRP of $29.95. The five-film WONG KAR-WAI COLLECTION is priced at 99.95 and will be available to the general public on October 19th, 2004.

As Tears Go By and Days of Being Wild were both written and directed by Wong Kar-Wai and are considered to be two of his most daring and poetic feature films (Days is certainly as acclaimed as his later works Happy Together and In the Mood for Love). Both feature films display, for the first time in Mr. Wong?s career, some of the motifs and aesthetic sensibilities that are widely seen as his trademarks.

The first of many collaborations between the director and superstar Maggie Cheung, As Tears Go By is often compared to the early work of Martin Scorsese for its viceral depicion of young mobsters. Days of Being Wild marks the first joint effort between Mr. Wong and acclaimed cinematographer Christopher Doyle (In the Mood for Love and Rabbit-Proof Fence). Mr. Doyle has lensed all feature films directed by Wong Kar-Wai since Days of Being Wild.

Kino on Video's WONG KAR-WAI COLLECTION also brings recently re-mastered editions of other two titles previously available from Kino on Video: Fallen Angels and Happy Together. Wong Kar-Wai's use of saturated colors and kinetic camera work can be better appreciated in these two new editions made from new transfers. Kino's newly remastered Fallen Angels is a cinematic ballet (choreographed to perfection) of rage, dark-humor and desire performed by a contract killer (Leon Lai Ming) and the female agent (Michele Reis) who books his assignment.

Kino's Special Edition DVD of Happy Together, also made from a recent high-quality transfer, premieres the fascinating feature film BUENOS AIRES ZERO DEGREES, which documents the making of this cinematic masterpiece set in dazzling Buenos Aires. The story of a gay couple strongly connected to each others abusive and sometimes violent display of affection, Happy Together combines moments of incredible subtlety with histrionic rage and stands as one of Wong Kar-Wai's strongest depictions of contemporary violence and alienation--here inseparably intertwined with human affection.

So, does that mean this won't be a new transfer of "Chungking Express"?

I would guess not. You can see in the picture the spine is exactly the same, and this is Buena Vista's court, after all...

I went ahead and ordered this set from the DDD sale, and am looking forward to watching the films (though it's on backorder, so I have no idea when I'll get to watch them, hopefully during the holidays if the set shows up in time).

I've been on the fence for this one for a while. I definitely want the films but I've heard mixed reviews about the quality. There is a R2 early 2005 release scheduled for As Tears Go By and Days of Being Wild so I'm going to wait for reviews on those before buying anything.
