I'll probably stick to my current release, great film, but don't think I'll double dip.

Yes, and he can ruin his own movies. Sometimes the studio knows best. His 'Last of the Mohicans' director's cut is terrible -- everything the studio cut NEEDED to be cut.

The theatrical version was tight and perfectly paced. Mann destroyed this with his director's cut.

(Same with Milos Foreman's 'Amadeus' director's cut. Ugh.. painful.)

I was under the impression that it was Forman himself who felt that the longer cut would be too long for the audiences and chose to cut some back, not the studio.

Saul Zaentz never struck me as caring much about length either way.

Yeah the movie doesn't need a director's cut, it's already three hours long. But I certainly won't mind seeing the deleted scenes in some form.

I also wouldn't mind a new transfer, as the current one is subpar (it's a laserdisc rehash).

Why would the WB want to wait to have it coincide with the DVD release of Collateral. It's 2 different studios......Collateral is Paramount/Dreamworks.

Good point. WB is just being lazy.

The reason I say that is that a while back I read an interview with him where the DC was supposed to air on NBC in a two-part series a couple years back. Eventually, NBC chose not to air the DC and stick with the theatrical version. Maybe I should have rephrased my wish and said that I hope it is a 2-disc set with the theatrical and the DC.

What NBC did was even worse. Mann gave them a cut of the film with 40 or so minutes of new footage so that the movie could be split into a 2-part miniseries. NBC decided at the last minute that they'd rather air the whole thing in a single 3-hour timeslot. If you'll recall, the movie's theatrical running time was just over 3 hours. So instead of using the version with 40 minutes of new footage, they discarded it completely and instead cut about 40 minutes of old footage from the theatrical cut. Entire characters and subplots were excised. Mann was furious, and demanded they remove his name from the film. The version that aired was credited to "Alan Smithee".

from the digitalbits (rumor mill)

A lot of you guys have been asking us when we'll finally see Warner's TBA Heat: Special Edition. Look for it to street at the end of the year, timed to coincide with the DVD release of Michael Mann's Collateral (from DreamWorks or Paramount - we're not sure how the video rights will split).

It is two different studios, but it's about money, and they think it'll drop bigger numbers if it's released along side Collateral.

The Heat SE has officially joined the ranks of Duel and Ed Wood. Btw, insofar as the tie-in with Collateral goes, did anyone else think it was a pathethic attempt to replicate the style and mood (and epic quality) of Heat? I mean, Tom Cruise even looked like De Niro - same hair, same suit and everything (just not the same quality of acting). Oh well, I guess I'll just bide my time with the bare-bones version until next year.

I agree and those are just some of my problems with Collateral which, although it's an improvement on Ali, I still think is ridiculously overrated and doesn't come close to touching Heat. From the ridiculous scene where Foxx faces those thugs in the restaurant to the nightclub shootout where miraculously NOT ONE SINGLE BYSTANDER GETS SHOT despite the hail of bullets going off to Cruise just getting up, shaking the dust off his pretty suit and running away just seconds after being in a brutal car crash to the preposterous coincidence involving Jada Pinkett Smith's character near the end to Cruise getting shot in the neck and just brushing it off like this guy's the fuckin Terminator, etc. etc. etc. etc. etc. etc. etc. Some people think THIS was comparable to Heat???? NO FUCKING WAY. N O W A Y.

Anyways, can't wait till this SE comes out, whenever that may be.

You have fuck'n got to be kidding me. If Cruise looks like De Niro, it's for a reason. Cruise is suppose to look like any average 9-5 worker in downtown los angeles. he is suppose to blend in.

Collateral was one hell of an amazing film using the city as an important actor that took a step forward from heat where the city was also a major factor in it.

Well he didn't do a very good job. If I saw this guy walking down the street I'd ask him, "What the fuck happened with your lousy dye job? Are you TRYING to look old or something??"

You clearly haven't been in downtown los angeles for more then 10 minutes. You get a lot of various looks. Lets put it this way. You witness a murder and for description you say tall, gray suit, gray hair. You are describing half the crowd right there. he blended in.
