Yeah we found out right after we got Club Dread about the SE. I don't mind the double releases, but it is only fair to warn us beforehand so we can decide which we want to get. Otherwise, it just pisses me off, especially on a movie I really like, like Club Dread, where I really want the SE.

Let me translate the studio-executive-speak in that article:
"Consumers are stupid and impulsive. As soon as a DVD of a movie they like comes out, they're gonna buy it. They can't help it! So we're going to adopt the routine policy for virtually every movie, bnig or small, good or bad, to release a craptacular stripped-down version first, then wait until all the hardcore fans of the movie have bought one, and then we're going to release an EXTRA spectacular 2-disc version because we know they will buy it again. If sales of the EXTRA spectacular 2-disc version are strong, we'll release a SUPER ULTRA spectacular 3-disc director's cut version (with two minutes of new footage) a few years later. When all is said and done, we'll be millionaires and the stupid, impulsive consumer will have puchased the same movie 3 times!"
It's a brilliant plan, and if I were a studio executive, I'd do the same thing. But as for me personally, I've been caught double-dipping for the last time. I don't buy a DVD anymore unless I feel completely satisfied with that version of that movie and would be able to pass on any future spectacular editions.

Personally, I'm OK with the 2-disc version of this film. It's not a movie I want to spend upwards of $25 on just to get some more special features. The current version is plenty loaded already.

Inside the "Hellboy" booklet insert, I found a coupon that states:
"Give 'Em More Hell - $5 Mail-In Rebate on 'Hellboy Director's Cut' or 'Hellboy DVD Gift Set'."
It says the Hellboy Director's Cut will feature discs (no number of discs listed) "jam-packed with special features and an all-new cut of the movie with new commentary and an exclusive, limited edition 'Excerpt From the Diary of Grigori Rasputin' created by Mike Mignola."
It also says, "The Hellboy Gift Set will include the Director's Cut" and an exclusive, limited edition Hellboy figurine."
No release date is set yet, but the coupon says "coming soon". The rebate must be redeemed by November 30, 2004.
