The most memorable scene for me is when he is sleeping by the railroad tracks and the train wakes him up.
when did i disagree with you in the first place? I wasn't looking for a criticism to my opinion...my opinion is just that and i am not sure why anyone is agreeing or disagreeing. i stated something that was never intended to be further discussed. i simply was looking for rational explanations to why a lot of people think this movie is so great and why there is such a clamoring for it. that is all...

When did I say I was speaking for the entire verbal world? You're right, I stated MY opinion and that is all it was meant to be. I simply was looking for an answer to my question and nothing more. There is no need to take MY opinion and discuss it at all.

What kind of answer do you expect, when you threadcrap?

Universal better not delay this, again

how in anyway shape or form did i threadcrap? do you actually know the meaning of the phrase? i think not. look it up before you slander. i stated my opinion and mine alone. no where, no how did i bash another's opinion or bash the OP or anyone who liked the movie "Duel" as they are lots, nor am i off topic.

Edit: Just to enlighten the poorly educated...

What is a threadcrap?

A "threadcrap" is a term we've come to use here at DVD Talk for a post (usually negative) that is off the topic of the thread in which it is posted, or criticizes/ridicules the thread starter or the thread itself. Threadcraps usually have no reasoning behind them, but this is not always the case. This definition is not meant to be all inclusive, but it is meant to give you a general idea of what the term means. Ultimately, the moderators hold the final word on what is or is not a threadcrap.

I didn't come remotely close to the very definition of threadcrap my friend!

Wow.

How can one answer your question (which I think I did) without discussing your opinion?

You said "It wasn't that great of a movie...by today's, yesteryear's, and critical standards. Someone please tell me."

You state that it wasn't a great movie by any standards (which is just an opinion) and then ask why the movie is liked? The answer is because a lot of people think it IS a great movie.

You got 3 replies to your question and none of them were particularly harsh. Yet you've snapped at all 3 of us? Ooookay. If you don't want to discuss the film (or your opinions of it), why did you ask the damn question?

i stated something that was never intended to be further discussed.
You do understand that asking a question usually requires a response, right?

r u being beligerent on purpose or do you really not comprehend whatsoever?

all i wanted was an answer to my question. my opinion was not up for discussion as it was one person's opinion. all i wanted was some reasonable explanations as to why this movies is so great. saying becasue people think it is is really not much of an answer...now is it?

my responses were not to the answers, but the criticisms to my opinion which should not have been up for discussion/bashed.
response 1: "because a lot of people disagree with you?" (is not even close to an answer)
response 2: "we can certainly agree to disagree" (i was asking for agreement of disagreement...just an answer "the film "Duel" is yada yada, directed by yada yada, it portrayed feelings of grief and tautness between yada yada- that is an answer, plain and simple)
response 3: i know i was stating my opinion and not everyone else'...still not an answer to my question which is all i was looking for. nothing more, nothing less.

this has gotten so much out of control that i simply dont care about this convo or this movie.

I'm being belligerent?

Perhaps in the future, you can make it more clear what aspects of your posts are up for discussion and which aren't. It'll make it easier for the rest of us to compose our responses.

Speaking of which, I believe you mean "libel" not "slander".

And if you look a bit further down at the EXAMPLE below your posted definition, you'll see that:

"The point of the thread isn't to discuss the quality of the movie, but to discuss the movie's DVD release."

all i wanted was an answer to my question.
Ah, but the question itself was a fallacy. The question was based on a false given (that the movie is crap). Yes, this was expressed (badly, but it got across) as your opinion, but you were proceeding as if this opinion was a fact, which led directly to your question. If you actually wanted your question asked, you should have phrased it better. "Why do people like this movie?" for instance, instead of gauging your question on false givens which were likely to cause problems. Not to mention borderline thread-crapping (yes, going into a thread about a movie coming on DVD and saying "This movie is bad" as a fact -- which you did -- is generally regarded as thread-crapping).

To answer the question as to why the DVD is so sought after, it was because of the cancellation, which drove prices through the roof. If I had to guess, I'd say that this also led fans of the film to be frustrated that it was "available" but impossible to find, and that their hopes had been brought up only to be shot down, so they tend to be happy when it's *finally* coming out. But I'm not sure, as I've yet to see the film.

I've been waiting for the DVD ;)

i know i was stating my opinion and not everyone else'
Actually, no, saying "by any standards" is saying that it's beyond opinion. That said, bbo *did* address your question, by pointing out the fallacy of your assumption that it was not good by the three standards you listed. Especially the "critical" one, that's just *wrong*.

Sex Fiend 07-13-04 02:48 PM

I pre-ordered Duel just last week through CH, mainly as my qualifying purchase to get the latest deal (buy one at regular price, get the others for 50% off). However, this week it is no longer available on CH's website. I haven't received any message that my pre-order was cancelled, but this is not a good sign. It also makes me wonder what the status of my pre-order is...

Tony Dvdfan 08-13-04 02:12 PM

I was looking at this disc today, and noticed a small difference from the last release. This one comes in a nice slipcase, with a much cooler cover than the regular one.

Was a nice surprise, wish i could've picked it up today and maybe posted a pic (haven't noticed it on any store's pics), but am forced to wait till tuesday.

Everything else on the latest release looks the same as the last one.

bboisvert 08-13-04 02:56 PM

Hmmm... I'll have to check this out. I have the last (cancelled) release, but I'm a sucker for a cool slipcase. :)

How were you looking at this release when

a.It might now be cancelled(dont know for sure)
b.It isnt supposed to be released until the 17th?
c.You didnt see it in a store.

I am curious and confused? I hope this isnt cancelled again. I am sick of waiting. :)

USCJeff 08-13-04 04:05 PM

How do you know i didnt see it in a store? Thats exactly where i saw it...when i put 30 copies of it into a storage lockup.

Anywho, i would be surprised if this was cancelled, and if it was i'd grab them and throw them on the exchange forum. :)

shaggy 08-17-04 04:07 AM

Circuit City had them yesterday, is there any difference besides the slipcase compared to the recalled version?

Chew 08-17-04 06:48 AM

Picked up my copy of Duel from BB on Saturday! I can't tell you how many times I've been to my BB on a weekend and seen them break the street date on "minor" titles.

runnersdialzero 08-17-04 10:39 AM

I know. Best Buy breaks minor titles like no one's business. I always go on Satuday or Sunday and I get a couple of things that's not supposed to be out yet. They're usually pretty cheap as well.

Just pick up Duel at Wal-Mart for $14.66. :)

One question, the sticker on the clipcover mentioned this was Steven's directorial debut but I thought his first was one of the episode in the Night Gallery tv pilot.

runnersdialzero 08-17-04 02:53 PM

Went to Circuit City at 12:30 where I believe Duel is $12.99. They were all out and they only got 5 copies in.

Rammsteinfan 08-17-04 03:54 PM

Went to CC today and picked it up for $12.99. They only had 2 copies left and the guy said they only had 5 or so in the shipment. Guess its not a big title... never seen it before so I will enjoy it for the first time today hopefully. I watched the interview already and it looks good for a TV film.

As for his directorial debut... I guess they mean his first 75 minute TV movie or movie that was released in Theatres at 90 mins. Who knows what those marketing guys are doing... ;)

Artman 08-17-04 06:52 PM

Skimmed thru the movie after I purchased it (have a habit of doing that). For some reason during the opening credits, the video is cropped slightly on the left side of my 4:3 television and slightly on top. But after the 'directed by SS' it looks perfect.

Interesting, just wondering if it's like that on others?

John-In-VA 08-17-04 07:37 PM

Got it at CC even though I had to run the "let me see your bag and receipt" gauntlet at the door. I loathe that. Anyway....I've seen this movie many times in the past but it was like watching it the first time now that I could pump up the volume and hear the rumbling of the truck.
