Would you guys think i was kidding if i told you that between my wife and I we have (just confirmed via 3 hours of counting) 4,332 DVD's - i don't even have all of them archived in DVD profiler yet so i just did a "quick" count. I hope the bar code scanner works....

Thanks,

Matt

How many VHS do you have? I have around 25,000.
By the way, I am working on organizing the collection. It just takes a while with a collection of this size.

I have 160 DVDs and everyone I know thinks I'm insane for having so many.

I have 1061 not counting box sets according to DVD Profiler and over 2000 VHS. I used to go nuts everytime Blockbuster or Hollywood Video had sales. I bought a lot of the VHS for $3 at pawn shops.

Thanks to Premier service on DirecTV and four DirecTiVos (one HD), my rate of increase has dropped significantly. I'm learning what I need to own and what movies I can be happy with watching one time on the movie channels.

Hi Austin. Just out of curiousity what kind of DVD player do you use to watch your dvds? I assume you have some sort of 200 or 300 disc changer? Certainly having a majority of your discs stored across multiple dvd changers(Sony's inparticular allows them to be daisy chained) would be the best solution no?

Wow!! I must say this thread has amazed me.

I've just joined up to these forums, so please welcome the newbie, but I have been reading DVD talk for quite a while.

I have 180 DVDs at present, and never even imagined getting to a mark like 1000. People that know me or those I tell I have 180 already think I'm nuts. I suppose if I wanted I could add another 200 or so that I could possibly want, but I guess my tastes are a little more mainstream than those peple with larger collections. Some of the titles I have read in their collections I have never even heard of let alone would consider buying. I guess I haven't really been "exposed" to many of the more obscure titles, so how can I buy them if I don't even know of them?

I missed out on the crazy coupon deals some have eluded to. Maybe because I'm from New Zealand, so I need to find reputable dealers who ship internationally (mainly Amazon). Plus the NZ dollar is fairly weak so it does get pretty pricey. I would have to say though I've spent 3 times as much on hardware. Are these people who have 1000's watching them on $50 players and 21" tv's? To me the major feature of DVD is the sound and picture quality, so I'd rather shell out on hardware upgrades than purchase 100's of titles I'll never get time to watch.

I know you're kidding.

There's no way you have a wife.

Dude, are you crazy? I'm from NZ and I buy all my DVD's online (90% R1, 10% R2/4) and I save buttloads! The NZ pricing sucks major ass, they only ever sell retail ($40), and their idea of a special is $3 or $4 off Ok sometimes Whitcoulls do a special on the first week, but it's still nothing compared to what I can get it for overseas.

Hell, a Simpsons season retails for NZ$120 and I got the R1 for under NZ$50. Buffy retails for an insane NZ$180 and I got it for NZ$65 (I know the Buffy price has come down recently, but it had been out for a good 3 years before that happened). If that's not saving money, then I don't know what is. All you need to do is spend some time comparing prices, and you could get it cheaper than here by miles, even with the international shipping (with DVDSoon and CD-Wow, you can avoid shipping costs altogether!).

Plus the dollar isn't doing bad at all against the American, lately. It sucked when it was at 45 cents ages ago, but now it's staying around 66 cents which is really good. I usually go with the Canadian retailers because our dollar is even better against them. But I always compare them both to make sure.

Plus it's cool when R1 gets the release way before us. I saw 13 Going On 30 in the cinema, went home, ordered it online, and had it in my hands a week later. If that doesn't rock, I don't know what does.

That's so insane. When I saw an ad for that the other day, I thought it was a misprint! I haven't been paying attention to the KB releases that much, since I'm going to wait until they all get released to make my decision, but us getting it now is ridiculous

I only have 56 DVD's. It seems (well, is) a pathetic amount, but I'm not exactly rolling in it at the moment. Plus 60% of those are TV box sets, so I have alot of multiple DVD sets.

I can't imagine myself going over even 200. I don't watch many movies (relatively), and there's only so many TV shows I'd buy on DVD.

Still, they're all ones I watch regularly, so I feel it's a nice little collection

Hey Austin, are you going to build some enormous shelves to house all those VHS tapes and DVDs?? The DVDs are supposed to stand vertically I thought.

I crossed over 1,700 titles just last week, but that amount will drop by about 20 titles later today. I've decided to weed-out the wifes titles and a few of my own stinkers. of course I have another shipment of 8 coming sometime this week...so I guess I'll be back over 1,700. I guess I just wasted mine and everyone elses time by writing this.

still have the goal of 2,000 titles by just after new years. I'll get there....by a hair.

I'm just curious when I see people mention they want to get to a certain number of DVDs by a particular time--is this in reference to your wish lists or just that number of DVDs in general?

Take someone like Gut for instance. He's about 300 titles short of 2,000, but he's got hundreds of titles on his wishlist and is seemingly picking at least a few new releases every week. So his goal doesn't seem like it's all about the number game, since there are probably a few hundred discs out there of his interest.

But I've seen people here with a couple hundred discs saying they want to get 1000. Now, in some cases, there may be hundreds and hundreds of titles out there that interest you, but I get the feeling that some are just pushing towards having 1000 DVDs. It's quite a feat, but it's not one I'd shoot for myself if I didn't have 1000 titles in my range of interest. I've got a shade over 200 right now and at the moment, only have less than 50 on my wish list. Granted that there's a lot out there that I haven't come across or thought of when I compiled the list, but I can't see myself hitting the 1000 mark even if I had that much money to spend.

Obviously others have a much broader taste than me, but I still get the sense that a few people are more about collecting DVDs and not so much films.

I haven't decided on shelves yet. I am still trying to get them in order. Slowly I am getting there.
