It's also a matter of level of interest. I love movies, but I have many other hobbies that take up my limited free time, thus I don't buy all that many movies, and wouldn't even if I had more money as my free time is split among so many things that I like to do.

hell...I'm having a hell of a time not buying at least 10 a week. so finding more than 1,000 is too easy for me. it's hard keeping it under 2,000 titles by x-mas.....and I should break that mark by December. with so many imports grabbing my attention, finding a mix of that and domestic films that I still dont have is too easy. all that and I dont even come close to buying everything that comes out. you can own 2,000 and still be very selective. thats obvious from looking at my collection.

According to http://hometheaterinfo.com/dvdlist.htm there are over 44,000 DVD titles currently available.

I own about 13.6% of the total available number of titles. Obviously I and others do not "buy everything that comes out." We are still selective. So what if maybe our tastes are more eclectic than yours ... or our tastes are less discriminating than yours ?? Does it have to make sense?? It does to me and that is all that matters to me and that is my opinion.

give me a break. owning 6000 dvds does not mean you are selective. jsut because there are 44000 dvds to buy? you have to look at it fairly - 6000 dvds is more dvds than 99.9999% of dvd owners have - you are are NOT selective at all.

at my pace of buying dvds, it would take me about another 25-30 years to hit 1000.

A lot of people tell me I have way too many DVDs, and I'm only at around 450. I tell them that's nothing, and this forum proves it!

I have over 3000 DVDs, possibly more than 4000 now (I stopped counting). All legit "retail" stuff, too.

But anyone who knows who I am (TVShowsOnDVD news director) won't be too surprised by that!

It's not just TV shows, either...I own lots of films. I'm practically a junkie for this stuff. The question I'm frequently asked is "Where do you put them all?" The answer is: EVERYWHERE!

As a owner of a large amount of dvds and other movies, I have to inform you that Light Trinity is correct and we are both selective. In the average week, there are around 100 new dvds that come out. Many of these I am not interested such as the nonfiction or the children. Some are too expensive and you have to wait for a price drop. Others are not too my taste. When you narrow down the list only about 10% of what is coming out. I would say that was selective.

I have around 650. But I count each disc in a multi-disc set seperately. i.e. box sets, and tv series.

Even then, once a year I go through and decide what I probably won't watch again or don't need, so I sell a bunch. So mine hovers between 600-650.

I'm probably approaching 2000 dvds, mostly foreign, horror, criterion, & music.

I find it hard to believe that there are people out there who canNOT find 2000 dvd's they'd like to own, for the right price. Especially now that music dvds and concerts are being produced at an alarming rate, usually in amazing 5.1 dd/dts sound, I wonder why anyone buys cd's anymore. My newest dvd that I just watched was that new Tori Amos dvd 'from sunny florida', which was 10 bucks from Fry's. over 2 hours of music, in 5.1, stunning sound and performance. Who wouldn't want that? And I wasn't even a huge Tori Amos fan, though I think I will convert now.

Its funny to see that a lot of the dvdtalk old-timers have all increased their collections to around the same 1500-2000 range. I haven't looked in that 'how many dvd's do you own' thread in a long time (in fact, does that thread even exist anymore??).

As far as storage: I built a row of shelves about 3 feet wide, going from floor to ceiling next to my audio/visual setup. Each shelf is barely taller than a dvd. So I have something like 10 or 12 shelves floor to ceiling. This is more than enough to hold the 1500 or so that I really like and keep, and it really doesn't take up any room at all that is usable for any other purpose. And it looks kind of cool -- my original intention was to build a sliding opaque screen, similar to a japanese rice-paper screen door to cover the dvds. But I found them asthetically pleasing enough grouped tightly together as they are, that I found the cover unnecessary.

I also have a separate selling room, where I keep all my crap I am selling, such as duplicate dvds, dvds I hated, cds, lps and books that I am selling, etc.

He's still selective, just not overly so or as much as many of us who only buy movies we know we'll watch repeatedly.

Not really. The price of DVD is really dropping. Average price must be under $10 by now.

Maybe if you columbia house over and over and put a ton of time into share the love and other deals or buy mostly used DVDs.

Most DVDs are around $15 at launch and $20 after that, with the less popular ones hitting $14.99-9.99 racks after a few months.

Still, even at $10 a pop, 6,000 DVDS would cost $60,000. So you wouldn't have to be filthy rich to buy that many, but that's a ton of money to spend on a Hobby none the less.

I don't agree that the average price is less than $10. But even if every one of those 6000 DVDs cost $10, that means it cost $60,000 to buy those DVDs. That's not casual spending money for the average person.

No, considering that is more than double my yearly salary. There is no way I could even approach that. I don't know if there are that many DVDs I'd want. I think if I bought everything that is currently released that I want, I'd probably own about 500 DVDs.... maybe.

Austin, I'm sorry I doubted you before, but hopefully you understand... (been meaning to say that for a while now)

and, fwiw, I can totally understand how one could amass that many films... every time I look I find things that I want... I am only limited by funds... however, if I lived with my folks and didn't have a mortgage and a $400+ monthly auto loan payment I think I could easily have 6000+ DVDs already...

If I had every dvd that I even slightly want right now, I'd only have around 700 or so.

Christmas and my birthday is a great stock-up time for me and DVDs. I am no longer able to work, but it's all I ask for when it comes to gift-giving time....anyone asks for a suggestion from me and they get a list of DVDs I'd love to own. If they purchase me just one DVD from my list, I'm thrilled, but for the past three years, all I get from my Dad at Christmas time is DVDs. My girlfriend gets the money from Dad the day after Thanksgiving, places a major order and he's done with me....he's thrilled and so am I! I currently have just over 750 DVDs in my collection and I have a ton more I'd love to own. Sure, not being able to work anymore does afford me more film viewing than the average person who must juggle a job and other outside activities, but my illnesses limit what I'm able to do, so this is not only a great form of entertainment for me, it helps keep my mind of other less-than-happy things going on in my life, at the moment.

oh please. the point is, even though he only has 10-20% of ALL DVDS ever made, it doesnt make him selective because its a relative term. if hes selective, then who isnt? the ONE person in the world who has 25,000 dvds?

you guys dont know what the word even means.

People are different... I disagree with you big time, but you are still a pretty young dude, too (correct me if I am wrong... pretty sure I remember this from your past posts though), so I think that those of us with a few years on you have had the opportunity to be interested in films for a good bit longer than you and therefore have built up a longer list of favorites than you. Plus, everyone has different ideas about what is worth owning. I have a lot of titles that people I know have never heard of or would think are "crap" but I would never consider getting rid of them because to me they are great films that are important to have on hand to view at a whim and part of the library that will enable me to share my interest in film with my children. Some of you are firm believers in netflix and renting, but I am convinced that it is a much better value to buy movies since I know that *if* I want to I can always sell the movie and get back enough of what I invested to have spent less than a rental, plus I have the power and flexibility to watch it at my leisure.
Some people are just more passionate about film than others. Personally, I think I would rather have no DVDs than only a hundred or so all of which I had seen before. I have so many films that I have seen that I have not yet had a chance to go back and dig through the special features like commentaries yet that I may never get through all of the extras, but it's all there at my disposal for when I want it. I know this is kind of a rant, but I disagree with you being so hard line saying that there is no way people could be selective and still own thousands of films. There is a certain value element that comes into play, sure, but I am sure that if you asked anyone here with 1000 plus DVDs they can give you a list of movies that they would never buy at any price. For example, gutwrencher likes "nunsploitation" titles... I for one, have never bought a nunsploitation title and can't imagine any price that would make me want to own one... it's just not for me, but I have some titles that others with just as many or more DVDs than I have would rip on and call crappy or whatever and that's ok... to each his own.
