Dazed and Confused SE coming

I guess I will hold on to my copy that I have now although I was looking forward to the upgrade. But I guess it is not much of an upgrade now. And that will be fucking sweet if Criterion releases it in a year or so.

Hi Wiley,
Just to let you know - there has been some trouble with Universal regarding their upcoming release of the DAZED AND CONFUSED DVD. I feel like I'm in an 11-year echo chamber with these idiots. There was a cool disk in the works with extended interviews, Kahane Corn's documentary MAKING DAZED, footage from the reunion, etc. but it turns out that these won't be on it any longer because, after all these years, they're rushing the title out to make some sort of deadline. Because of this I will not be doing a commentary or helping with anything else.
I wanted everybody to know the scoop and that I am pushing Universal to license the title to the Criterion Collection in a year or so and they would put out a fantastic disk.
I am withholding doing any press on the Universal disk and will not be affiliated with it in any way because of their continuing lameness toward this title.
Hope all's well in your world. Take care,
Rick

After seeing the incredible job Criterion did on VIDEODROME, FEAR & LOATHING IN LAS VEGAS and Linklater's own SLACKER, I'd hope all fans of this film would e-mail Universal's DVD department (click the below link) to say they support Linklater's request to have Criterion handle the special edition release. Maybe with the extra fan pressure they'll buckle sooner and give us a truly worthwhile version of this great film.

I just wonder how much success Linklater will have pushing Universal to license it to Criterion. Slacker was a small name movie, not many people know it, but Dazed and Confused seems a bit too well-known for Universal to let it go. Here's hoping, though, as Criterion has been shattering even their own standard over the past few several months in terms of quality.

Thanks for the link, Narshty! I sent the following:
RE: Dazed and Confused
I was very disappointed to learn that you've decided not to pursue a special edition DVD for this title, as you had announced. I understand that this is an economic decision, and bid you no ill-will for trying to make a buck.
I do request, however, that you consider licensing this title to the Criterion Collection in the future. Go ahead and put out your new, not-very-special edition DVD and make what money you can. Then, next year, take a licensing fee so that Criterion can produce a good version for the fans.
We would appreciate it.
Sincerely,
Richard Malloy

Guess I'm the only one who'll be buying it still. This news sucks, but having never purchased the original, I'll be upgrading on FTARH and getting this, too, since it equates to about $10 per disc over at DDD. If you guys don't have the first DVD and really want the movie, this news won't matter so much. Just get it and then sell it off if this Criterion thing actually happens. If it does, you know it's not gonna happen for a while.

I'd prefer not to let Universal have my money for such a lousy re-release. Dazed is already sitting on my DirecTivo (yes, I know it's not widescreen nor anamorphic), so I guess I'll just hope that Criterion picks it up (even though a release by them could be years away).

I'm glad I hung on to my previous copy. I knew no matter how promising things looked when this title was first announced that Universal would screw it up. Kudos to you, Universal, for being so damn predictable.

That's what I love about high school girls. I get older. They stay the same age.

Picked up the new Dazed & Confused Flashback Edition and Fast Times @ Ridgemont High Special Edition at BBV over the weekend with some of my trade in credit. I didn't own the previous version of Dazed and do own FTARH Collector's Edition. I'm not a DVD reviewer or anything and didn't have much time to give a detailed evaluation but I'll give my 2 cents.
Dazed & Confused
Picture & Sound - I thought the anamorphic picture looked pretty good, maybe 3 or 3.5 out of 5 given today's high standards. Played the DTS track and it also sounded decent for the type of movie.
Bonus or "Bogus" Features:
"Nine Deleted Scenes" Fullscreen - Self explanatory
"The Blunt Truth" Fullscreen - Some educational commercial on weed from the 60s/70s that lasts 4:22. Probably shown in High School at that time.
"Retro Public Service Annoucements" Fullscreen - "VD is for Everyone" 1:01 & "Crying Indian" 0:53 Basically 2 more educational commercials from the 60s/70s, one about VD and the other about pollution.
One note, the front of the DVD cover art is not the same as the front of the slipcover. No big deal, just thought I would mention it.
Fast Times @ Ridgemont High
Picture & Sound - Menu & Chapter List almost exactly the same as the previous version. Went through about 3 scenes and to my eyes, the video looked the same as the previous version. The DVD only states "All new Digitally Remastered 5.1 Surround Sound" and says nothing about remastered video. Played the DTS track and was disappointed. Listened to Chapter 7 & 15 and IMO the difference wasn't that great. (Of course I had to check out Chapter 9 also
)
Bonus Features - Menu is exactly the same as previous version. I didn't listen to the commentary but I would bet money its exactly the same.
Bottom line, it looks like possibly the only difference is the added DD5.1 & DTS track. Well if you want to count the trailers (not forced)
Since both discs will probably be available for $7.99 to $12.99 I would say Dazed is a definite (minus the "Bogus Features" and Fast Times is questionable.
