Thanks for all the hard work. It couldn't have been easy.

Next, I have a couple questions. I saw The Treasure of the Sierra Madre and The Adventures of Robin Hood at #55 and #30 respectivly. But I also noticed the Warner Legends boxset containing both those movies as well as Yankee Doodle Dandy at #38. Why the duplication?

I also noticed the same thing with Die Hard. The movie was #49 and the box set was #63.

Donīt get me wrong. I have nothing against the intent. Not at all. But think about it. Itīs based on 850 single internet members and about 1200 store users, making it about 2000 votes totally. Thatīs hardly a fair view to determine a Top 100 out of millions of buyers. Surely, no one will ever be able to make a difinite Top 100. However, statistically, if 4000 or higher placed a vote then the final result would without a doubt change dramatically.

Still, a great job, though.

You people brought it crashing down.

It's up now - I'll have to keep an eye on it.

Thanks a bunch...it looks great!

I can't believe the Ric Flair bit is on there either....but so it goes. And i have to say, Fight Club at #4? eesh....yes it's a great set, but man, it pains me to see such drivel ranked so highly. I believe no other nomination illustrates the inherent fallability that Dane pointed out of this survey better than FC and the internet fanboydom that pushed it so high.

But again, I think it's a fabulous tabulation, and it looks incredible...very nice work.

without resorting to looking through codes, did you put the ranking numbers in each spot on the background .gif or layer them with the text and images in photoshop and then insert them over a plain backdrop?

You'd be even more surprised to learn then that in 2001, before FOTR:EE came out, it was #1 (if I'm not mistaken) and #2 in 2002.

I think you miss the point of the survey. The survey is best DVDs, NOT best movies. The survey notes the best overall DVD package - transfer, audio/video quality, extras, packaging, etc., the movie ITSELF being only a part of the whole.

You can think Fight Club is drivel, and compared to some art house flick or classic work it might very well be. I don't, and there are many others who agree me (probably more so than the other way around). But again, that was not the point of the survey.

As someone who had Fight Club at #1 on his list, I'm thrilled it ranked so high.

Thanks for doing this, Jough and Josh! GREAT job.

Oh I know...I was just surprised to see it remain that high with all the great releases we've seen in the last year, let alone last two years.

And no, i didn't miss the point of the survey...I know it is for the best releases, but you can't consider that in a complete vacuum separate from the film...at some point the film does factor in.

But again, I realize more than anyone that opinions vary far and wide...my only point was that I hoped the patina of greatness had faded from this one....but apparently not.

Nor does it detract from what a great overall site it is...once again, thanks!

If this indeed is only 850 single forum members, then this hardly gives a reliable indication what the majority of DVD lovers thinks are the best DVDs released.

Well I don't care much what the "majority of DVD lovers" think. The majority of DVD lovers are buying the action pic of the week, and while there is no shame, crime or harm in that, I also generally dont' think that as a majority they are qualified to rank the relative greatness of a DVD. We are the people who are pretty well into this as hobby, and thus we've probably seen the biggest cross section of these DVD's and are qualifed to rank them appropriately. I mean, xXx or the Matrix may have outsold entire years worth of Criterion releases, but that doesn't mean you're getting the information you want out of that majority. And again, that's not a dig on the action exclusive fan(the DVD buying majority) but it's not where you go for the goods in my book.

Teenagers go to more films, but I wouldn't trust them to do a Sight and Sound ranking.

And to all those who slight the Ric Flair release, have you actually seen it? I know Wrestling isn't everyone's cup of tea, but there is a reason why it's the only sports DVD on here(that I saw). It's much more of a narrative documentary on his life with complete extras on certain segments than a collection of wrestling matches, and if you give it a chance, by the end, you'll be feeling geniune emotion in the final Chapter of the DVD. I know I have some questions about rank and what not, but I haven't judged any DVD's I haven't seen, no matter how much of a head scratcher their rank or inclusion was.

Nothing so pedestrian, my friend.

I'm not going to delve too deeply into the design of the site.

Some people won't see the number effect with the number beneath the description if they're using an older browser. It's all done with CSS. It's just plain text and then I absolutely position the numbers beneath the text, and style them with the CSS stylesheet. You can check out the code.

It's one of those things that looks good if it works, and degrades nicely for those who want to just view the list on their cell phone browser.

Check out http://w3.org for more on the wonders of web standards.

I just finished reading through all of it! Spectacular work! I think the results were very fair and can't think of any other way to do it more effectively.
It is voted on by the DVD enthusiasts just the way it should be.

I was surprised to find myself quoted four times with three in the top ten! Thanks

I totally agree with you in that regard. Today itīs mostly teenagers who goes to the movies. The targeted group is about 10 - 30 years of age. After that you usually has established a family and have other things that is more important to do in your spare time.

Arthouse movies do not get a lot of attenion. Only maninstream movies. I bet most teenagers have never heard of IL Postino, The Pianist, Storytelling or Requiem for a Dream. Or any other arthouse, independent or foreign flick for that matter. They donīt know what they are missing.

But again, 2000 voters can only give a narrow scope of what is the best DVD overall.

Really impressive job. Nice layout and everything. I actually expected Toy Story Toy Box to make it at #1.

But one thing I cannot believe, where in the same hell was this dvd in the minds of the voters?

1997 Release

2003 Release (Anamorphic Release!)

Ted Lange is a STAR!!!!!!!!!!!!!! No respect!

Ouch. Sopranos didn't make the cut? I wonder if you had combined the seasons...

Just a quick suggestion: a new MT entry with the entire Top 100 list (titles and rank only) on one page - like the non-list? If you wanted to get fancy, you could link each title to its respective summary (if you have anchors in place).

alright, noticed a mistake
this is one of the quotes for the beatles anthology
"Of all of my favorite living director’s DVDs this one has the most supplements and insight. If only all his films could be issued with these kinds of supplements. " i think you meant to put it somewhere else.

HAHA! That 'GLITCH' DVD says 'Dolby Digital 5.1 Stereo' for audio.
So which is it?
