I don't think we'd ever see a big increase in the number of "classic" Who being released, simply due to the time-consuming (but totally worth it) restoration being done to the stories. Maybe they could squeeze one or two more titles out a year, but not a lot more, unless they were to do a "Key to Time" and not do any restoration on some of them.

Personally, I prefer slow and remastered releases to quick and untouched ones.

As for a wave of popularity for "new" Who...frankly, I think the BBC missed the boat. The show's been off for so long that it's now become regarded as a poorly-made relic by the general British public, and a virtually unknown series in the USA (viewership in the States has been steadily decreasing since the late 1980s, when Lionheart started jacking up the fees. Only six PBS stations currently run the show). If it does succeeds or fails will most likely be 100% on its own merits (or lack thereof). Name recognition will not, IMO, help the show at all (in fact, it could harm it, due to the show's somewhat tarnished reputation amongst the British public-at-large).

Actually the Restoration team has said that they could easly do more stories a year and not hurt the quality of the discs or the restoration. It's purely a marketing decision by BBC Worldwide to release the discs slowly.

The Key to Time didnt look as good because that indeed was a rush job, and it wasnt handled by the RT (well, not really - sort of.)

In regards to the "poorly-made relic" - it would the way the english public has embraced the show, it's anything but. I saw a tidbit from the production office saying that just about every actor in the UK had been asking about getting a part. The BBC has extreme confindance in the show, giving it a 5 year run and making it the cornerstone of their family programming.

It's a relic much like how the Next Generation launch in 1989 was a relic of the 15 year old Star Trek.

Abranut 06-18-04 07:08 PM

I just blind bought "The Three Doctors" used at a video store near my house (4 bucks!). I own practically all of the Tom Baker discs. Will I enjoy this new pickup? It will be my first non-Tom Baker Dr. Who experience. Any thoughts?

El-Kabong 06-18-04 07:32 PM

Well, Pertwee rocks as a Doctor and the supporting cast are all very strong - so no worries there. The interaction between Pat and Jon is some first rate stuff, some really classic moments. Sadly Bill Hartnell doesnt get much screen time due to his illness.

The story is rather average for the era. It doesnt suck, but it doesnt stand out of the crowd either. The restoration on the disc, is top notch as always.

In short - you cant go wrong for 4 bucks. There's at least 10 or 15 bucks worth of entertainment in there. You got quite the bargain!

I just blind bought "The Three Doctors" used at a video store near my house (4 bucks!).
just to be clear.... was this VHS or DVD?

either way Three Doctors is a pretty good story... There are better 3rd Doctor Pertwee stories (like Sea Devils, Day of the Daleks, Inferno, ect.) but Three Doctors is great fun.

turborobb 06-24-04 02:44 AM

I was just watching the "Seeds of Death" DVD.... amazing how fantastic the picture quality is. It looks like it was filmed last summer and turned into DVD... wow.

The Valeyard 06-28-04 07:24 PM

The Missing Years DVDs might have a new name: The Lost in Time Collection.

I got this post from the HTF in their TV Shows section. This guy e-mailed BBC America and asked......

I asked if Blake's 7, Tripods, more seasons of 'Allo 'Allo and the Dr. Who DVDs already out / coming soon in the UK, The Green Death, Ghost Light, The Visitation, and the Leisure Hive + the possiblility for Return of the Master Trilogy(+an Anthony Ainley tribute since he died recently), The E-Space Trilogy, War Games, Trial of a Time Lord, The Black Guardian trilogy, Survival, Black Orchid and Shada were going to be released within a year. They told me this:

quote:
------------------------------------------------------------------------

Thank you for your suggestions on Doctor Who. They will be passed onto the
Home Video Programming department.

Unfortunately "Tripods" and "Blakes 7" DVD's are not currently available
or planned for release in the U.S. and Canada. However, we use requests
like yours to help us plan future releases.

Good news, "Allo Allo: series 2" is currently being planned for release.
Doctor Who: "Earthshock", "Pyramids of Mars" and "The Lost in Time
Collection" are as being planned for release very soon.
------------------------------------------------------------------------

I'm glad about that Allo Allo, but it should be moving faster, they get two seasons at one time in the UK.

I already knew about Earthshock and Pyramids of Mars, I was hoping for some extra info about the others as I am about to import a huge amount and I would wait if I had a future forecast. Those Dr. Who suggestions are personal favs but I think most would want them too, most of them anyway.

What is the Lost In Time Collection? Is it a new name for the Missing Adventures or something else?

Me too, I'll pick it up when it comes out. It'll be nice to see these stories on DVD. I have some very old camcorder copies of these from the 80's that I haven't watched for years. I wonder if they'll ever release some of the funny outtakes from the Tom Baker years. Also, does anybody have a good copy of the JNT interview that was aired on the premiere of 'Time and the Rani' that was aired on WNYC Ch. 31 in New York? I only ask because I was the one who did the interview and my only copy has gone missing a few years ago....

But you know - I think I'd be willing to make an exception to my "No Double Dip" rule should, oh say - Dalek Masterplan 1,3,4 and 6-10 show up suddenly.

That being said, while I think we'd be better served with a complete story set, I'll still buy the silly thing come this fall.

I'm really surprised about the indifference about the Orphaned Episodes set, If I had to make a Doctor Who DVD wish list a missing episodes set would be in the Top 5. I can't wait to see the surviving episodes of Evil of the Daleks, Faceless Ones, Abominable Snowmen, Moonbase and others in DVD quality. I love the Troughton era, they are all time classics.

From Gallifrey One:

The Lost in Time Collection • July 14

Though BBC Worldwide for some reason won't officially confirm any sort of UK release for the forthcoming Lost in Time Collection, the collection of orphan Doctor Who episodes coming out this November (despite the fact that retailers already have an early November date for sale), BBC Worldwide America not only has confirmed it but has released cover illustrations for the North American release, also due in November, and details about the individual sets. Below are the cover illustrations for the complete North American edition, which is two DVD sets packaged together, as well as the individual versions on sale here, one with each Doctor. (We don't know if they're being offered separately in the UK, but apparently the North American edition is done so.)

Lost in Time: The William Hartnell Years
http://www.gallifreyone.com/covers/lostna-hartnell.jpg
Never broadcast in the US, these episodes offer an enticing glimpse into 'lost' stories that have achieved legendary status. Fans can relish rare appearances of the Daleks as well as guest star turns by Julian Glover (Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade), Michael Gough (Batman) and Jean Marsh (Upstairs, Downstairs). New to video is Episode 2 of "The Daleks' Master Plan," the story that marked the series debut of Nicholas Courtney, who later returned time and again as Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart. Includes episodes 1 and 3 of "The Crusade"; episodes 2, 5 and 10 of "The Daleks' Master Plan" and episode 4 of "The Celestial Toymaker". Featuring audio commentary by actors Julian Glover, Peter Purves, Kevin Stoney, designer Raymond P. Cusick and moderator Gary Russell; clips from episodes 1, 3 and 4 of "The Daleks' Master Plan"; a reel of 8mm off-screen clips; Who's Who actor biographies; narrative links; and photo gallery. Single CD; WHV Catalog #E2081.

Lost in Time: The Patrick Troughton Years
http://www.gallifreyone.com/covers/lostna-troughton.jpg
Never broadcast in the US, these episodes offer an enticing glimpse into 'lost' stories that have achieved legendary status. Fans can relish rare appearances of the Daleks, Cybermen and Yeti, as well as an episode from the second Doctor Who story by Robert Holmes, the series' most influential writer. Includes episode 3 of "The Underwater Menace"; episodes 2 and 4 of "The Moonbase"; episodes 1 and 3 of "The Faceless Ones"; episode 2 of "The Evil of the Daleks"; episode 2 of "The Abominable Snowmen"; episode 3 of "The Enemy of the World"; episode 1 of "The Web of Fear"; episodes 3 and 6 of "The Wheel In Space" and episode 2 of "The Space Pirates". Featuring audio commentary by actor Deborah Watling, director Tristan de Vere Cole, story editor Derrick Sherwin and moderator Gary Russell; deleted scenes from "Power of the Daleks" and "The Abominable Snowmen"; Australia and New Zealand censor clips; the fan-produced documentary special "The Making of Fury From the Deep"; audio versions of episodes 1 and 3 of "The Moonbase"; a 50-minute featurette on missing episodes; Who's Who actor biographies; and photo gallery. Double CD; WHV Catalog #E2082.

Lost in Time: The Complete Collection

Just wanted to present muchly the same info, in a different way, as presented at Steve Manfred's Doctor Who Video FAQ:

“LOST IN TIME” ANNOUNCED – NOVEMBER 2, 2004

The website dvdanswers.com is reporting that BBC Worldwide Americas have today announced their forthcoming release of the long-rumored Lost in Time DVD box set containing episodes from partly-missing stories. It is scheduled for November 2, 2004 (Election Day).

The set consists of two parts. The first is called Doctor Who – Lost in Time – The William Hartnell Years and will contain one disc with six William Hartnell era episodes on it. The second is Doctor Who – Lost in Time – The Patrick Troughton Years and will contain two discs with twelve Patrick Troughton episodes spread across the two. These two parts will be available separately for $24.95 each (suggested) or together in a “gift set” containing everything for $49.95 (suggested).

The Hartnell disc will contain the following episodes:

The Crusade episodes 1 and 3,

The Daleks’ Master Plan episodes 2, 5, and 10, and

The Celestial Toymaker episode 4.

Note that episode 2 of The Daleks’ Master Plan is the episode that was recovered only just this year and has never been commercially released in any form anywhere since its original broadcast on BBC1 in 1965.

This disc will contain the following extras:

- Commentary by actors Julian Glover (King Richard in The Crusade), Peter Purves (companion Steven Taylor in the The Daleks’ Master Plan and The Celestial Toymaker episodes), Kevin Stoney (Mavic Chen in The Daleks’ Master Plan), and designer Raymond P. Cusick (original designer of the Daleks and the designer on The Daleks’ Master Plan), moderated by Gary Russell.

- Deleted scenes from episodes 1 through 4 of The Daleks’ Master Plan.

- 8mm film clips from missing episodes (recovered from a fan who pointed his home movie camera at his TV.)

- Who’s Who actor biographies

- Narrative Links (presumably telling you what happens in the episodes you can’t see because they’re missing – these could well include the special in-character-as-Ian links that William Russell recorded for the VHS release of The Crusade in 1999.)

- Photo Gallery

- All episodes except for The Crusade episode 1 have been given the VidFIRE video-look process treatment. That Crusade episode could not be processed due to a bad tramline scratch present in most of the print that would ruin the effect.

The Troughton 2-disc set will contain the following episodes:

The Underwater Menace episode 3,

The Moonbase episodes 2 and 4,

The Faceless Ones episodes 1 and 3,

The Evil of the Daleks episode 2,

The Abominable Snowmen episode 2,

The Enemy of the World episode 3,

The Web of Fear episode 1,

The Wheel in Space episodes 3 and 6, and

The Space Pirates episode 2.

This 2-disc set will contain the following extras:

- Commentary by actress Deborah Watling (companion Victoria in the middle part of this era), director Tristan de Vere Cole (director of The Wheel in Space), story editor (and later producer) Derrick Sherwin (who worked on the later part of this era), and moderated again by Gary Russell.

- The full soundtrack audio of episodes 1 and 3 of The Moonbase (so the entire story will be represented on this release)

- Deleted scenes from The Power of the Daleks (Troughton’s first story – these will incorporate the broadcast trailer discovered late last year)

- Deleted scenes from The Abominable Snowmen

- The Australian and New Zealand “censor clips” from many episodes throughout the black and white era

- A featurette on the visual effects from Fury From the Deep (which should incorporate a reel of behind-the-scenes footage known to exist)

- 50-minute featurette on missing episodes in general (probably an extended version of The Missing Years documentary previously released on VHS)

- Who’s Who actor biographies

- Photo Gallery

- All of these episodes have been given the VidFIRE video-look process treatment.

As exciting as this release will be, please remember to get out and vote that day too (that’s US Election Day). :)

None of these episodes have ever been broadcast on TV in North America.

Just wanted to let everyone know that there are some interesting conversations about the Lost in Time box set going on at the Doctor Who Technical Forum, including comments from the Doctor Who Restoration Team.

Specifically, there will be no telesnaps included on these DVDs due to, as Steve Roberts puts it:

MONEY!!!! Take a look at the low number of commentaries, the lack of producion subtitles etc and read between the lines...
Also, the "Missing Years" documentary will be the same as it was before, according to Paul Vanezis:

Actually, The Missing Years is being kept intact as was, no changes have been made to the body of the programme. The additional material consists of a short feature in the style of 'Since this programme was made...'.
Cheers,
Paul

YAY!! The Lost Episodes collection looks awesome!

I wonder if this collection is in addition to the normal 2 Doctor Who DVD's or in place of them?? If Earthshock and Pyramids of Mars come out Sept 1st, then the next set should come out the first week of December. (two stories every 3 months) The lost episodes collection comes out in November.

by the way... I went to Best Buy today and they had 3 copies of The Three Doctors, 3 copies of The Two Doctors and 2 copies of Curse of Fenric.

turborobb 07-15-04 11:21 PM

I think Who is going to have a hard time beating Farscape in that poll, but I voted for it anyway.

Naw, we just need for it to place higher than Enterprise. If we do that, all is good.

While I will always support the idea of complete episodes over orphaned, I gotta admit that these before-and-after shots make the pill going down MUCH easier.

Ok Turbo - you win. Happy? :)

I'm already excited to get the Earthshock and Pyramids of Mars DVD's, which come out the first week of Sept. I wish they would do 1 DVD every 6 weeks instead of 2 DVDs every 3 months, it would make the wait a little more bareable.

By the way, I understand, sadly, that the Lost in Time collection will be the last Who DVD release of 2004, I was hoping another complete story would be included with it. the next two DVD's come out in Feb. 05.

also... rumours are that Attack of the Cybermen (6th Doctor) and Claws of Axos (3rd Doctor) are going to be two of the DVD's released in 2005.

Well, if that's true, they'll have a lot of work to do on Axos. I think it's one of the lower-quality (picture wise) Pertwee colour stories. It might be one of those stories that was returned to the BBC from Canada (in NTSC).

From Outpost Gallifrey:

While a report today on the Sci Fi Online site says that the first UK DVD release of 2005 will be the Patrick Troughton story The Mind Robber, it's been denied by the Restoration Team, who say that the first 2005 release is "definitely in colour"! We, in fact, are told that it will be either Attack of the Cybermen or The Claws of Axos, both of which we reported months ago were on the tentative 2005 list. All these are, of course, just rumors until confirmed by BBC Worldwide.

The Valeyard 08-03-04 03:01 PM

There was a little more added to the Gallifrey Post when I just read it.

More interesting than Mind Robber, Attack of the Cybermen or Axos? What the hell could it be then? The only thing I could think of would be the Beginnings boxed set - but to have two boxed sets back to back like that doesnt seem the BBC's style.

EDIT: unless, of course it's a boxed set of Mind Robber, Attack AND Axos!

Do you think they found a financially reasonable way to colorize the B&W Pertwee episodes and one of those is going to be the first release of 2005?

Andrew

turborobb 08-04-04 12:37 AM

Tom Baker isn't my favorite Doctor, but he's the most popular and has the most stories, so it makes since to release more of his than the other Doctors. I wouldn't be surprised if it's Geneis of the Daleks, Terror of the Zygons or Seeds of Death.

also... Pertwee's Terror of the Autons would be a great DVD to release around the same time the new series starts to air
