This has to be one of the lamest excuses for an SE that I have ever seen.

Calling this a "Special" Edition is like calling Jude Law monogamous.

I'm sure Martin didn't want to participate, since this would remind him of when he was, you know, funny.

Did Reiner and Martin have a falling out? They made 4 movies together, then after 1984... nothing.

Did anyone notice if the scenes that appeared in the TV version but not on the original DVD are part of this edition?

Reiner is happy to do commentaries so I wonder why he didn't do one for this.

Wow, people here crack me up. All I've read on these boards over the years is where's anamorphic 'the Jerk'??? WAH-WAH

I love this release ... and no where on the DVD does it literally say "SPECIAL EDITION". Be thankful that we have THIS version!

Heh, you're absolutely right. All it says is 26th Anniversary Edition, which it is. It lives up to its title, so there's really nothing to bitch about. It was inexpensive and the new transfer is solid. Better than the last one and cheap too!

Shit.

This release with no "extras" whatsoever.

Shinola.

Buying this for $12.
Anamorphic Widescreen.
5.1 sound.
Fantastic PQ [compared to the previous release].
Selling my original "OOP" copy on eBay for $40.

Wonder if the Blues Brothers Anniversary Edition will be like this..

Since the Ghostbusters thread is all screen-cap happy, let's get some before and afters going here, too (or at least shots from the new release).

Let's hope not; as announced, it's supposed to include both cuts of the movie.

We should be happy that The Jerk finally got released widescreen but the fact is that it pisses me off that Universal put so little effort in their releases. Seeing how WB, Criterion and other labels put decent extras in their titles and releases, it frustates movie fans like myself that Universal doesn't seem to care about their titles unless they are named American Pie. They already screwed the Dazed and Confuzed releases by taking out the extras that already were produced for the DVD and they took out the commentary on the Bourne Identity re-release to add fluff pieces of extras about the sequel. Where is Double Indemnity? Universal need to get their act together and take advantage of their huge film library now.

Sorry, I don't know. I just want to repeat the question because I really want to know myself.

Anyone?

props to Geoffrey Kleinman for calling shit dvd on the Kevin Smith interview...

To many times I see websites that won't call out this sort of thing for fear that the gravy train will stop rolling in...sorry to bump it, but good stuff Geoff...

From my review:

When I see a DVD that houses a very popular old comedy and comes in a case with the words "26th Anniversary Edition" emblazoned across the top, well, I expect some supplemental material of some actual worth. For a movie that made over 73 million bucks (and that's in 1979 dollars), earned a spot on the AFI Top 100 Comedies of All-Time, and has long since proven itself a fan favorite of the highest degree -- a Special Edition this skimpy is almost unforgivable.

No retrospective featurettes or cast & crew interviews. No sort of commentary track or behind-the-scenes material. All you're getting in the extras department is this: an outrageously pointless ukulele lesson, a 4-minute scene of deleted "Father Carlos" footage, the original theatrical trailer, and some text production notes. The best goodie in the bag is the theatrical trailer. Seriously.

I hate to sound ungrateful, particularly because I'm just too relieved to finally own this movie in Widescreen, but The Jerk is one of the least impressive "Anniversary Editions" I've ever seen. And what makes it even more annoying is that there are several notable scenes that are included in the cable version of The Jerk. Any of you fans remember the "Tilt-a-Whirl" sequence or the "cracked leather jet seats" conversation? Nowhere to be found on this DVD, annoyingly enough, and those are precisely the sort of things that should be included on a Special Edition DVD.

But I was also pleased to hear G mention it in the Kevin Smith interview also. Maybe someone at Universal will be listening and taking notes.
