According to the insert in set #1 of the dvds...episode #225 and #226 are the same episode. It says:
Some episodes were assigned multiple numbers by ABC-TV following network preemptions due to news events or other special programming. However, no episodes were skipped or unaired by the network.
I don't understand the double numbering in this case then, because the original airdates listed don't show a skipped day.
Episode #224 was on May 5, 1967 (which I believe was a Friday) and Episode #225/226 was on May 8, 1967 (which would have been a Monday).

I finally remembered to check this first color episode question last night. According to Dark Shadows Almanac: Millennium Edition, the first episode taped in color was #294, however it was aired in B&W. The first episode aired in color was #295, however the original tape no longer exists and they use a B&W kinescope in syndication. So episode #294 is in now in color and episode #295 is in B&W (and has a voice-over at the beginning trumpeting DS is now in color).
So the color episodes should begin at the beginning of set #3, since set #1 (40 episodes) is episodes #210-250.

FYI.

I wrote DDD the following letter:
Hello DeepDiscountDVD,

I was wondering if "Dark Shadows Set #2" is going to be for sale on your
site.
I preordered and purchased Dark Shadows Set #1 from DeepDiscountDVD, and
would also like to purchase Set #2 from you, but it is not listed on the
site
as an upcoming title. It is scheduled to be released from MPI on August
27th.
and received the following response:
Thank you for contacting DeepDiscountDVD.com!

We do not currently have this item, we will be carrying this item shortly.

Please contact us if you have any questions.

Thank you for clearing that up, garmonbozia.

You're right May 5, 1967 was a Friday. We don't know why the multiple numbers were assigned to this episode by the network, but we know they were, so Kathryn Leigh Scott fell down on the job as editor of the book I used for a reference.

Good news about DDD! Thanks!

Cool.... hopefully the R1 isn't far away. While starting to watch the 60s series recently, I got an itch to watch the revival series again... and I ended up renting them (now watching episode 3 of the 13 episodes).

Maybe someone can help me I'm getting a little confused by some of the reviews on the web. Are the episodes in their original episodic versions, or have the closing and opening titles been edited out to make one long compilation on each disc.

yes, episodic format. all openings and endings are in tact.

Each 21 minutes episode is only one chapter.

IF you select and episode, it will continue to the next episode when you are done.

hope that helps.

I received the ring from MPI over the weekend.

Here's a picture and description from eBay:

Here is a Barnabas Collins Ring still sealed in original cellophane and in a black velvet ring box. The inside lid of the ring box is lined with white satin and has "Dark Shadows Dan Curtis Productions" in gold letters. The velvet box comes inside a glossy white outer box with "Dark Shadows, Barnabas Ring, Dan Curtis Productions" in gold letters on the top. The ring is made of metal with an imitation black onyx stone just like the one Jonathan Frid wore as Barnabas Collins on the tv show. The metal band is adjustable to fit any size finger. This is a great Dark Shadows collectible!
The description is pretty much accurate. The ring and box were made in China. The ring has a bit more weight to it than I had anticipated. It's been about ten years since I've seen one of the original ones, so I really can't compare the two. The only "original" ring I saw on eBay hadn't sold (the guy wants close to $600!), but I saw about five of these that sold for around twice the MPI price.

All in all, it's a cute little TV knickknack and will look nice displayed on the shelf in front of my Dark Shadows paperbacks.

So lets see. (1200 episodes) / (40 episodes/set)
= 30 sets.

30 sets * $60/set = $1800 full price of the series.
30 sets * $42/set = $1260 at DDD prices.

(30 sets*3 months) = 90 months = 7.5 years to release
~$168 a year for my fix.

So quick question for the more die-hard fans... I got hooked
on the first 15 volumes or so at my local blockbuster which had them for rent. I liked what i saw, so i'm sure to pick up the first few sets, but I'm curious if there's a point at which the show started to go downhill? or are all 1200 episodes worth watching? ;-)
I watched a year or two of DS during it's original broadcast in the 60s/70s... I've watched the entire series twice through on SciFi, and will be buying the whole darn thing on DVD...

In my opinion, the show never drops off... Some arcs are better than others, of course, and you'll have your own favorites. The very last story arc, where Barnabas is replaced with Bramwell, is a bit weaker than most, but in general the show is VERY worth watching all the way through. Also remember that Quentin -- the most popular character after Barnabas -- isn't even introduced until halfway thru the series...

For me, the dryest part is here at the beginning. I'm eagerly awaiting the 3rd set, where color episodes begin, and the 4th set, where they travel into the past for the first time...

Money-wise, just think of it this way: at DDD prices, you'll only be paying about a dollar an episode... Those are unheard of prices, and an amazing deal for something that (if you're like me) you'll be cycling thru over and over for the rest of your life...

For me, the show got lame around #800. They had started recycling plots by then and many of the earlier character had left. The show had become too outlandish toward the end, and was only good for camp value.

According to Amazon.com:

"Dark Shadows Set 3

This item will be released on September 24, 2002. You may order it now and we will ship it to you when it arrives."

(you think they could change up the cover art a little more than
just different tints.....)

oops... one more thing

If the information above is correct, they have switched to a monthly schedule from a bimonthly schedule. (i.e. OUCH my wallet) Does anyone know anything about that? TVonDVD people?

also, this thread has been around for several months and the thread name is increasingly inaccurate. Any chance of a switch to "One and Only Dark Shadows Thread"? There's lots of useful info in these posts.

I think it would be a good idea if this thread got retitled "One and Only Dark Shadows DVD thread" or something similar also.

Just a bump in hopes a moderator sees the requests....

old news, but am posting in case it slipped under anyone's radar:

Dark Shadows Collection #4 comes out Februrary 25.

It's been a LONG wait since the last set came out! but MPI is making up for it since Collection #5 is scheduled to come out on Arpil 29th and Collection #6 on June 24th. That's only a 2 month wait in between both.
