Army of Darkness definately exists on HD DVD as a non-combo now, as noted.
Evil Dead II is coming from Anchor Bay/Stars on Blu-ray in October... Assuming they hit their release date.

I hope this related news article would help:
http://www.highdefdigest.com/news/show/866
I think the issue relies on the consumer's preference
Good side of it.. is that.. the wave of HD/DVD combo released are now DISCONTINUED!..

Evil Dead DVD....is this 'effect' really that bad?
Hey guys. I recently purchased Evil Dead on DVD this past week and watched it. Good movie, in a very akward way.
Nonetheless, quick question. EVERY scene outside that has the moonlight in the picture, is it really that crappy looking of a special effect job? It is almost as if there is literally a square video overlayed on the the actual picture to create the image of the full moon.
Are the special effect's this cheesy looking? I wouldn't doubt it, I'm just curious.
BTW, do the sequels get better? I know they are cheesy, almost so bad its good, but would I enjoy them?
Thanks!
-Stephen

If I'm not mistaken what you're referring to is a bad matte painting job. It was a very low budget movie.
Most likely, if you liked the first one, you'll at least like II and probably Army of Darkness. Of course, I knew a guy in high school who loved the first, hated the second and loved AOD, so you never know. Personally EDII is my favorite.

I could be wrong, but I think one of the versions of the Evil Dead dvd had picture quality/contrast/etc issues that made the moon stand out even worse than normal?

Don't know if you'll like the other two; depends on what you like. Evil Dead was a straight-up horror movie, Evil Dead 2 struck a careful balance between horror and comedy, and Army of Darkness is flat-out comedy.

Yea, what was it made for? $50,000 or 100,000? I know it wasn't much more than that. Considering that some special effects on the made for TV sci-fi productions are worse than what you see in ED then I think they did pretty good.
I thought the effects in Citizen Cane were subpar too.

There were several Evil Dead part 1 DVDs released out there. Care to share what version you got?
And looks like the suceeding paragraph after the first were more of generalized to the details of the Movie thand the DVD.
I hope the following reference below helps:

Sorry Abe, late response but the photo comparison is in the updated group of pictures same as reposted by steebo777
Major differences were:
1. The Emblem on top of the plastic case
2. The sticker
3. Information print at the back

Hey guys. Sorry, I forgot to check in this thread to see if the topic moved, which it was. It wasn't a 'versions' question, so I thought I would post it in a new thread.
Anywho, my version is this:
http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage....oduct&id=53027
Standard, one disc Evil Dead version at Best Buy. Army of Darkness looks more suited to my tastes, but I might just go in order. The over-the-top gore, cheesy story, and humor makes these enjoyable. But yeah, about the moonlight thing, it is that version that I have.
Thanks guys!
