My copy of Let Me In is housed in that damn Viva eco case. I thought Anchor Bay was using the Vortex cases. When did they do the switch?

That's because it's not an eco case. Universal don't use eco cases. As far as I know.

I just checked and couldn't find a Universal title in my library in an eco case. In itself that means nothing as I own surprisingly few Universal Blus, and in any event the title in question (Marmaduke) is not among them . The design that thelonelyisland mentioned, though, I think I have seen before. Large portions of the inside flap are noticeably thinner than the rest of the case, but it's still whole.

Yep, hate them. I will be replacing all of the ecos in my collection soon. This may save the studios a few cents a case, but it isn't ecological when people throw them away and replace them with good covers.

You know, the very least you could do is recycle the damn things. What are you proving by outright throwing them away? That you really do despise efforts to be less ecologically damaging?

I don't throw my Eco cases out, but I do switch them out with cases I already have that currently have a slipcover over them. I figure that should help prevent any puncturing.

I bought my first blu-ray, and it was an eco case. I hate those goddamn things. I also hate this thread dropped to the second page, so this fixes that.

Re: I Hate The Eco Covers
These things are the bane of my existence too. I'd say about 3/4 of the Blu-rays I've bought have come in some form of eco case. I buy more replacement cases now then ever before, but I don't care. I refuse to use these sorry pieces of shit anywhere in my collection.
For the skeptics who don't understand what all the fuss is about - it's not really the discs that these things put in jeopardy, but rather the covers. The percentage of damaged covers in eco cases compared to normal cases is staggeringly high. Sometimes I have to pick through 20 copies in a store just to find one without dents or punctures. This is heightened by the studios' use of thinner, lighter-weight papers for their cover inserts (something they started a few years ago). I don't know...I just hate them. I hate everything about them. Their stupid thoughtless designs...the phony environmental concerns they belie...the entire cynical screw-the-consumer attitude they were born from. And they're second only to snapper cases on my "All-Time Most Annoying DVD Marketing Strategies" list.

^^ joliom, You stated my feelings to the letter.
I despise the things. Everytime someone goes to grab one of these, the tissue paper the artwork is now printed on gets an additional crease.
What galls me is the studios ramming this "green" excuse...when we all know it's really just to save them money. Not only in manufacturing, but shipping as well.
What galls me even more is the $$ I spend buying replacement cases. $$ which are coming out of my pocket as an increased profit margin to the studios.
OT, but this is also my feeling about CD digipacks and board packagings. If it isn't in a jewel case, I don't buy it.
Anyone know of any recourse (petitions or whatever) the consumer may have about these abominations?

I know we all hate those plastic security cases that stores such as target uses for the blu rays.. but with these cheapo blu eco cases, the hard security cases actually protect from the damage that might normally occur just by the casual shopper.
Anyhow I wish they would just go away.. What % of people don't use the original cases anyhow? I know of only 1 person who takes the discs out of the cases and uses a binder system.

Re: I Hate The Eco Covers
Why do we need to be so green with DVD cases anyway? It's not like they're styrofoam cups or plastic water bottles or something else that is designed to be disposable. They're meant as a long-term storage device. We don't get all up in arms over other similar products. Nobody's insisting we start lowering the material quality of the millions of other plastic items we use in our homes. The handle on my toothbrush doesn't have a bunch of holes in it and the shampoo bottle in my shower isn't 60% thinner - and I go through those items a lot more frequently than good quality DVD cases. I just hate the fact that being "green" generally translates to paying more for less.

VERY GOOD point joliom. Wish that the manufacturers would realize that too!

I'm not sure holes in the shampoo bottles would be a good thing!
I think they call them eco-covers, not cause it uses less material, but so they can claim that they are doing well for the environment and to save $.. and that is it.

Re: I Hate The Eco Covers
Someone should go the other way with it and introduce a heavy duty case with extra-thick plastic. Environmentally speaking, it would end up being more "green" since they'd last longer and wouldn't inspire people to throw them in the garbage out of sheer disgust. Plus how much happier would you be to open up a new DVD and see one of those babies staring back at you.

Re: I Hate The Eco Covers
Ok, here's what I don't understand. I keep seeing these eco cases made by Viva. They have the same awesome hubs as regular Viva Elite BD cases. So why the hell can't I get the regular DVD cases with hubs like that!!?!?!??! Warner and Paramount have been using those cases for 10 fucking years but nobody else can actually get them. If I had the money to buy a thousand or so BD cases and a shitload of color ink, I'd scan and resize every cover to fit Viva Elite BD cases. I like those hubs and accept nothing less. I have around 1300 DVDs (and 300+ BDs). I've merged series titles into multi disc cases over the years (like all 10 Friday the 13th DVDs are in a 10-disc Versapak), as well as upgrading to BD, and kept freeing up good regular cases. At this point, I only have 8 or 10 more of those shit Amaray cases to phase out. After that, it's mostly a matter of filtering out eco cases when I can. I've also been trying to filter out my digipaks via BD upgrades and multi disc Viva Elite cases.
