Re: I Hate The Eco Covers

The new "Red Cliff" 2-disc international edition sets have those eco cases, too. I hate them. They don't adequately protect discs from even superficial dings. I recently gave a copy of "Ike: Countdown to D-Day" to my father, but thanks to the eco case, one small ding to the back of the box put a scuff on the dvd.

What's next, discs encased in saran wrap and cardboard slipsleeves?

I gotta question this. Something from the outside of the case still has to go through the clear outer plastic and the artwork to even get to the disc. If it's in its proper place in the case, then it's sitting half a centimeter above the outside. And that's ignoring the six centimeter-wide strips of case plastic that radiate from the hub to the rest of the back of the case. I have a very hard time believing your dad's disc was scuffed by "one small ding."

I guess it depends on your interpretation of what constitutes a "small ding". In my case, it was a hard bump that did not rupture either the plastic sheet or the paper insert, but left a small dent impression in both of these at the back of the case. The disc itself had a scuff mark at the indentation point.

If you've always had good luck with eco-cases, then bully for you, but I haven't. Question it if you want to, but I know from experience that discs are vulnerable to potential damage when seated in eco-cases that offer little more protection than a thin layer of plastic sheeting and a paper insert.

Re: I Hate The Eco Covers

How the hell do people have repeated and constant issues with dinging their dvds? And how is someones carelessness and disrespect for thier own property, somehow the fault of the movie studio?

Re: I Hate The Eco Covers

I have several eco-cases and have had one or two that had little indentions in the cover but nothing major. I re-use the eco-cases for movies that i put custom covers on (mostly my comic book collection) because the paper used for them is very heavy and doesn't get penetrated easily

One, if you buy your DVDs and Blu-rays through mail-order, the eco-cases make it more likely they'll be damaged in the mail than with a standard case. This is even more likely in the event the seller ships them in an envelope.

Two, they're more likely to be damaged in stores, either on the shelf, or by the person checking you out. A few weeks ago I bought a Blu-ray at Target and the clerk was struggling to get the Blu-ray out of the anti-theft case and managed to punch a huge dent in the front cover on the recycle symbol. I didn't notice this until after I unwrapped the disc, so I exchanged it for a new one.

Three, it's easy to dent the cases when you're removing and replacing the discs since the back isn't solid and it's nearly impossible to hold the case in a way that won't push your fingers into the empty spaces when you're trying to get the disc on/off of the spindle. Blu-rays are even worse since they're not as tall as a DVD case and don't have much solid plastic at the top and bottom of the case.

These things fucking suck cock and they're a pain in the ass.

The envelop-in-the-mail argument seems plausible enough, but I'm still not convinced by these other scenarios. There's nothing someone packaging a disc into a box should be doing that would cause the kind of wanton destruction you describe, and I've yet to buy anything damaged at a retail store.

For that matter, I'm unaware of even seeing anything at a retail store in an eco-case that was damaged. Which, as I've said before, baffles me since I have seen--and bought--DVDs in regular cases where the artwork was damaged on the back, above the little hollow area right around the hub.

As for how to hold the case, I have no idea how you're holding them, but I haven't had any problems to date. But then, I'm not applying a lot of force to the back of the package while handling it.

I don't doubt that you've had bad experiences with these cases. All I'm saying is, I haven't had any yet and I buy a modest number of DVDs on a regular basis (the majority of which come used from Half Price Books, where you would expect the wear and tear to be at its worst). I don't think it's as cut and dried as saying that your bad experiences are solely the fault of the eco-case design.

Yeah, i don't quite understand some of the complaints, is something that you will not play with, is not a toy, just open and close, nothing more.

Let's see....it's ugly, it's about as flimsy as any article of clothing that appears in Maxim magazine, it's actually looks to the be the equivalent of shreds of plastic thrown together and I think it smells funny too. Is that enough of a reason ? Besides, this particular case manufacturer apparently struck a deal with a bunch of the distributors for their case, because there are cases out there right now that look like normal dvd cases (with no giant pie slice holes) and are 100% recycleable. Translation, even better for the "environment" than this thing. I suggest we start burning eco cases in protest.

Re: I Hate The Eco Covers

I wonder if the day will come when the new clear television season amarays will change to eco...

I can't even imagine how a foil cover would hold up on these... I had to search thru numerous Animal House & American Grafitti covers to find one where there wasn't a ding or crease over the hole in a regular case.

Fuck I hate these. Whenever I order one in the mail it's always got a ding in it and almost everytime I find a Wal-Mart Dump Bin title I want it is pitted to shit. I have had to pass up on The Outlaw Josie Wales 7 times now because it is always damaged!

Re: I Hate The Eco Covers

i don't really like these eco boxes but i have noticed a few different ones. the iron man 2 has a few holes in it but left some not cut out. there are some that have the stencil for it to be cut out but they didn't do it too like this

i can't accept when they don't even give a insert for the dvd though when there is a slip cover thing like event horizon. i didn't buy this but took pictures at walmart.

i can't post links it seems so i can't show what i am talking about but have pictures.

Re: I Hate The Eco Covers

The first time I grabbed one of these eco cases I thought something was wrong with it. It was the flimsiest piece of crap. I forget what movie it was but it being on sale and the last copy I bought it.

Before posting this I actually went to try and find the movie and with how many dvd's I have I wasn't expecting to find it but I actually found a couple of movies that are in some form of eco case! I shouldn't have looked lol. At some point I'm going to buy replacement cases for all of them. Just out of curiosity is there a list anywhere of movies that come with them?

if i have to have one i rather have the first one. the second one i have no idea what they are thinking. i seen one like the second with no plastic left too.

just found out you can't quote someone that posted links too.

another note would you people rather have these or those snapper cases? i seen some topics from 1999 talking about how bad they were. have one and it is showtime and not bad really. just found out a few days ago you could take the cardboard out and that can help with cleaning them too if need too i think.

Re: I Hate The Eco Covers

Is one of the greatest ironies in DVDs when an eco-case uses less plastic and thus, less environmental impact... while it's wrapped in a tree-using, paper-made slip cover?

FYI - The first pic that you posted is not a slipcover. It's called the cover art.

I have no problem with the first eco case that I posted. I prefer that one than the other two. Blu-ray is also using these eco cases.

even if the dvd case slides into it from the bottom and it goes around the whole case? other 2 pictures are still in the plastic in the store. there is no insert cover art under the plastic of the case. that is what you get when you buy it new. the outer slipcover/cover art like you say. if this isn't a slipcover what is one then?

The single disc of Iron Man 2 never had a slipcover (cardboard). You posted a pic of the cover art (paper) of Iron Man 2.

Ah! I see what you mean now. That is weird that there is no cover art for Event Horizon even though it is still shrink wrapped. It could of been a factory error.

I guess I got confused with that IM2 pic. LOL!!
