No store is going to open DVDs and remove anything.

If one store has something that another doesn't, that must be because it's a promotion by that store, or one that store is participating in.

Rather than accusing me of saying something crazy like that, check the text of the post that I was agreeing with (and had quoted):

"My theory at the time was that they were able to get a better price from the manufacturer without the free book coupon. Not sure if that was true, but it made sense to me."

I agree that there's absolutely no way that a store opens all of the DVDs to remove/modify inserts. It has to have something to do with a different deal with the manufacturers.

Well, I'm sorry I even asked this. I was under the assumption that most new dvd releases still came with inserts. And when I noticed all the generic labels on the dvds I bought from Wal-Mart, I just made a guess that for some unknown reason (which is why I asked in the first place), they decided to remove the inserts.

Thanks for awnsering my question though (to those that weren't jerks about it), now I know not to expect inserts with most of my new dvds.

What do you mean, "generic labels"? You talking about the sticker seals on the case? I always see them printed with the movie name at the top. And if there's stickers on the side and bottom, they may not have printing on them, or have a security device warning printed there.

I mean, just think about how ludicrous your thought was - that a national retailer like WalMart, dealing in the vast numbers they are, is going to have its employees take the time to open each and every individual DVD case and remove the inserts??? And then re-seal and re-shrinkwrap them? It's laughable on its face.

Well, maybe they wouldn't open them, but have them manufactured their way.

CDs bought from record clubs like Columbia House are not produced in the same factory as the retail Cds. Ch gets the masters and the case's image files and manufactures everything themselves. That's why there's no UPC on the back of record club discs.

Yes, I mean the sticker on the top of the case. For example, I bought The Descent from Target. On the sticker on top, it had the name, but it also had the DVD logo, and some numbers. It also had an insert with it. DVDs I buy at Wal-Mart don't have anything but the name of the movie & the logo. I found that to be an ongoing thing. That's the reason I thought there might besome reason Wal-Mart would do that. I never said it would be a smart move if they did, that's the whole reason I was questioning it.

I don't think a retailer can legally open a "new" product, alter it, reseal it, and then pass it off as still being new.

Just doesn't seem like that would be permissible.

Now, is WalMart opening individual DVDs and removing inserts? Of course not.

Is WalMart buying production runs of DVDs without inserts? That could be a possibility.

How could that be checked? Compare a bunch of titles bought at WalMart to the same titles bought elsewhere. For instance, I bought Rocky Balboa at WalMart, and no insert. Has anyone bought it elsewhere and gotten an insert?

But are inserts less common in all DVDs, regardless of where they are bought? Yes.

Does anyone have any idea why Wal-Mart keep taking stuff out of the dvd cases?
That is seriously the most absurd things I have ever read.

I know for a fact that Wal-Mart removes inserts from DVD cases.

They also break into my house while I'm sleeping and rearrange the pipes under my sinks.

And they have people hiding in the trees around my house watching me twenty-four hours a day.

Maybe this was the plea deal that xNightfallx worked out with Amazon(he has to start negative rumors about the competition).

Please don't take this the wrong way.

The next time you go to post about the world's largest retailer doing something illegal, you should take a moment to think it though. No retailer would ever condone the opening of sealed merchandise and removing its contents by its employees.

EB Games opens sealed games to remove the disc so they can display the empty case, but this issue has been beaten to death more times then Glass Joe in Punch-Out!

When did the first slip cover that came with a section of the UPC cut away? Didn't some people at the time think someone was there cutting away those tiny rectangles out?
Later

Good question. The first one I remember was Sideways, because there was a big thread about it, but there had to have been something before it.

I heard they remove the inserts and replace them with religious pamphlets:

I also think Wal*Mart was behind the 9/11 attacks...

If you need to double check, I always go to my local grocery store video rental place and check the cases of their copies. They leave the inserts in, so if Wal-Mart really is at least ordering versions without the inserts (for whatever inane reason that would be) then you can find out.

The job title is "Insert Taker Outer" and it pays 10¢ less then minimum wage. For an extra nickel tho, I throw out all the Widescreen DVDs too.

Out of curiosity, how does this job pay as compared to the store greeter? Are the benefits the same? I'm asking since there may be others on this board looking to make some extra money to help fund their dvd buying habits. Also, if you are able to keep the inserts that you remove, perhaps you could also set up an "inserts for trade" sticky on this board...
