Spine Crap!!!!
What is with this spine shit lately? Every freaking dvd I get is now impossible to not screw up my case and leave SPINE SHIT all over the spine. Is there a term for this yet? If not I hereby dub thee SPINE SHIT!! Anyone come up with a solution to this annoying problem?

Started doing the quick-rip thing with the labels which is working out pretty well. Someone suggested doing this in another thread. I use to try and remove them carefully. Although, just getting a starting point to quick-rip is a problem because of the damn glue and I end up gouging the case plastic.

What I wanna know is when did the spine part of the shrink wrap start sticking to the spine? It wasn't always like this was it? Goo Gone doesn't do much against it.

I've noticed this a lot more lately as well, but I've also been buying a lot of older releases to catch up on my wishlist lately too. I just assumed the fact that I was buying more older releases (that have been sitting wrapped on the shelf) and fewer new releases (that haven't had the shrink wrap very long) was the reason for the Spine Crap.
Very annoying none-the-less I do however just slowly rub the plastic off the spine which works pretty well if you have patience.

Yeah Goo Gone will remove the sticky residue left by the security stickers, but it won't do anything against cellophane melded into the plastic of the spine. If it's really bad - like you can clearly see that the plastic on the spine is actually deformed from the heat - then it's a lost cause. On the other hand, if the plastic is still smooth but the little pieces of cellophane are stuck to it, it can be rescued. What you have to do is get a damp wash cloth and vigorously rub at it. The cellophane will generally slide off once you apply enough friction. Wash cloths work best because they have those woven knots which help get under the cellophane, as opposed to a smooth cloth like a paper towel or t-shirt or something. By the way, it should go without saying that you should remove the cover from the sleeve first, just to be safe.

I just started noticing this recently. I noticed it on my Xbox 360 games. I figured it was something to do with their shrink wrapping system.
I guess not.

I find that if you just peel slowly from the top, these tend to come off fairly well. Larger pieces left on can be pulled off the same way, and I lightly scrape off any bits that remain my thumbnail. It's kind of a pain to have to do any of this, admitedlly, but they're rarely a lost cause.

I usually just leave the plastic on my cases. I've noticed the "spine crap" as well. It now requires an additional razor cut along the side opposite the spine in order to remove the disc(s) -- which I keep in a binder -- which is a separate thread altogether.

Yeah, I hate spine sh*t. It's up there with glue left on the plastic (I still need to invest in some goo gone), and those security stickers all over the case that cause the plastic to wrinkle. Ugh! Maybe I should just invest in some new cases...

It seems that Fox and Lion's Gate movies are the only ones I run into with this so called "spine shit"
It drives me fucking crazy, especially when it's a 2 disc set because I don't have any shape cases to swap 'em with.

Bye
As I've mentioned before, I often pick up freebie DVDs that I have no interest in just to get the cases, and they provide me with a decent supply of replacement cases. Almost every time I buy a used DVD I need to replace the box because most of them have seen rough handling. Unfortunately, not many freebies are packaged in reuseable Amaray cases, and what's worse is that the cases for the "A Prairie Home Companion" preview disc at BEST BUY also have spine crap issues. Still, they can be useful.

I encounter this problem all the time, irrespective of studio or place of purchase. It seems like something that got especially widespread a few years ago. I almost never encountered this problem before 2002 or so. Of course back then wrinkled plastic sleeves like in Anubis2005X's picture were a lot more common, so it's kind of a wash. I just buy batches of cases from Sleeve City every once in awhile and keep myself well-stocked with replacement Amarays.
