Serenity HD-DVD Custom Cover

I think this is the first custom cover of the high definition formats, right?

Well, this movie needs one badly. The American cover art for Serenity is a widely-agreed joke that makes it look like a cheap space porno.

Here's a JPEG preview of my version:

You can get the full ZIPped version over at my site here: http://www.lyris-lite.net/fu_archives/000448.html

Comments and criticism very welcome!

This is good work for sure, but I don't think your version compared to the original is a significant improvement. To say that the american version looks like a cheap space porno is going a little too far, if anything the OG is showing more skin. I'm not saying the official dvd release is good art, but the original to me is pretty boring. I just wish there was good art for this film.

Thanks for the comments.

Buddy, true the version I used shows more skin, but I didn't mean it in that way - it was my (unclear) way of me saying I thought the US one looked cheap. Thanks!

Lyris,

perhaps you could add the tagline on the front, "They aim to misbehave."

That looks great. Now I just need to figure out where to get a decent copy printed.

Nice work, but when I get into HD-DVD, BD, or whatever, I'll want to use DVD keepcases for customs. I understand that they went with new cases so people would know they're different, but I strongly prefer the keepcases.

Thanks once again. I'm working on airbrushing out the annoying + mark over River on the front of the cover. Once I have the HD-DVD version fine-tuned, I'll make a standard DVD version as well.

Regarding the tagline - I did have a version with that on it but opted not to include it. I'll post a preview version with it included at some point.

BTW, what colour scheme do you prefer?

Everyone I've showed it to so far prefers the blue-tinted version (to match the European DVD cover) but I'm not so sure.

I actually kind of prefer the darker (non-blue-tinted) version - I think it fits, to me, what is one angry little film. However, the blue version works, too.

I'm not in the HD-DVD game yet, but when that time rolls around, I'd hope that the covers are done like THAT instead of the small, odd-shaped cases they are releasing right now. Snappers didn't last - maybe studios will transfer back over to keepcases in future releases.

Ditto - but sadly that cover is made for the small version. The DVD cases are much taller.

BTW, I'm working on adapting that cover (blue sky version) to a standard DVD case.

They better not.

Smaller and thinner is for me.

Any further progress, Lyris? I'm really looking forward to using your SD-DVD variant.

Here's the old-style DVD version. It looks weird to me because it's so tall and narrow, but I think it's a pretty good adaptation:

Tell me how you get on with that. Since you're in the US, I'm not sure exactly what paper size you're going to be printing onto, so tell me how you get on:

If anyone wants to take a picture of how it looks printed, I'd be curious to see it!

No problems here. For dvd covers, my standard practice is to tape an inch-wide strip of paper to the back end of the (8.5x11) good printing paper so the printer has something to grab onto for the last part of the print. Here's 2 photos (and it looks great printed out, btw):

Nice case, Lyris! Any particular reason to keep that number on the spine though?

Just to keep it looking semi-official, I guess - I always leave the numbers and codes on.

Nice print Canaryfarmer. However when I first printed mine I had similar colours to yours - her flesh tone looks a bit purple. You might want to try going to Photoshop, Image > Adjust > Color Balance and add +20 to the Red. That looked a lot better on my print.

I seem to have also put the DVD logo too close to the right as well. Doh! I'll fix those and reupload it.
