I once bought 350 DVD's in a single outing at Best Buy.

Granted, it was on Black Friday, and it was that $.01 Fox preview - set up DVD. I figured I couldn't buy the DVD cases any cheaper than that, and loaded up four or five baskets with 350 of them.

Here's the funny/sad part: the clerk couldn't figure out how to ring something up multiple times scanning it only once. He had to scan one disk 350 times, and had to press a button in between scans because their system doesn't like to scan the same thing twice in a row. Needless to say, the people behind me weren't amused, considering my bill came to $3.50, plus tax. Hell, they paid the clerk more than that to ring me out. It would have been cheaper for them to just let me take them without paying.

I saw this past Thanksgiving that they put up signs around the $.01 items stating a limit that you're allowed to buy.

When former Atlanta Braves pitcher Mark Wohlers was still with the team and out of action with an injury, the local paper reported that he purchased 1,500 DVDs at one go to have something to watch during his rehab. Hmmmm, at three per day that's still going to take well over one year to watch. I also figured that at (let's say) $15 each he dropped $22,500 on the shiny discs.

I suppose anyone earning $5 million per year can do this sort of thing.

I'll put my money on rich-y's explanation. They were probably stocking their own video store.

Either their own store or it was a stolen card.

"Do you want to know the most shocking thing? These guys paid it on a debit card. So, they couldn't possibly have stolen it, since they had to enter their pin number.

Has it ever occurred to you that the PIN number might have been obtained somehow?

I go with marty888 explanation. Sometimes, when I go to Tower Records, I see Japanese tourist with a basket full of cds. The joys of the Yen doing better than the U.S. dollar.

Do you know anything about retail theft? If you think an "old" couple (I don't think 50's is really that old anymore anyway) can commit an easy crime, you really need to wake up.

Hmm, it's gonna take a lot to catch up to Austin's 20,000 DVD's.

I can still imagine that huge stack of DVD's falling on Austin and him struggling to get out from under tham. It was league 20,000 DVDs under the sea.

The usual explanation: foreign visitors taking advantage of the fact the in general the cost for these items is less here in the U.S., and right now the exchange rate is a winner for people from UK, EU, etc
And if this is the case, hopefully they know about region coding.

(at least when I'm shopping in Japan, clerks assume I'm a foreigner and often make sure that I know that the discs I'm buying are region 2 only. Of course, I know that, but its nice of them to make sure )

Jesus people...ever think about maybe it's just someone with a stable life and a good job? someone who actually works hard? I know...what a shock. ever think he bought all his employees and friends and family dvds? it happens. maybe they just built a home theater room and wanted an instant library. makes sense to me. fanatic? no...I vote stable.

I agree with some of the other posts as well. but jumping right to calling them thieves is hilarious. anybody with that kind of cash in the bank is nothing but a crackhead. stop it...yer killing me! guess my $4,700 in my "hobby account" is stolen money. of course...my new parachute is going to drain most of that right away.

... they did, however, at the last second, return the Star Wars pre-orders ... in the interest of keeping it under 3 grand, because that would be an insane amount of debt(or)...

That is certainly true on certain new releases, but it sounds like they were dipping pretty heavily into the catalog titles...which are most definitely not priced cheaper at BB than at a wholesaler.

Not to mention, paying sales tax on inventory takes a big bite out of any profits - and I didn't see any mention of them giving a tax ID number.

That really doesn't make any sense. If they were those "loss leader" DVDs that Best Buy has on sale for cheap (especially new releases) then maybe. But Star Trek Boxed Sets, etc? Best Buy doesn't have good prices for those kinds of thing, not by a long shot. I think the "foreigners buying stuff to bring back home" explanation sounds reasonable.

Yes, that would be a $50 disaster for the couple that just blew 3K on dvds.

One of the profs from where I graduated would go to a store when he was looking to bulk purchase and tell them that he was looking to buy X number of CDs/DVDs, and ask if they would give him a deal. If yes, he would buy them there; if not, he would go elsewhere. It was usually 50 or more. I would think that it would work well for Mom and Pop stores, but not the big chain stores.

Look, you could go around and brag about your hobby account..but the fact is, its strange that somebody would just go out and buy $2,500 worth of DVDs in one sitting...no matter how much money you have to waste.
