Media Play- exchanging used dvds for new releases

The chain out here in the Detroit area Media PLAY invites people to bring in four used dvds in exchange for a new release dvd. Has any one heard of anything like this?

yeah they have this at the Middletwon, NY store as well, but I would rather trade in 1 to BB and pay $12.99 ( not that I would do this either, I would rather jsut apy $15 on release day)

and you know they will charge $12-$15 per used title that you trade in for 1 $20 title

If you have a Wherehouse Music they do a 3 for 1 tradein, and I have traded in some really crap $5.50 walmart bargain bin titles for a new movie up to $29.99, not too shabby.

I'll have to check this out. I have a bunch of old titles I need to get rid of, and I'd rather go to MP to exchange one title for a $12.99 new release as opposed to doing the same at BBV.

I just stopped by the MediaPlay by me and asked one of the sales people. She didn't seem the most k nowledgeablewhen I asked about the promo. She said on new release day, that any of those new releases were $12.99 with 1 DVD trade in. I asked her again if it was any and she assured me it was. Hopefully she's there next Tuesday at 10am when I go in to trade in 2 DVDs and grab Sealab: Vol.1 and Aqua Teen: Vol.2 for $12.99 each

Hey all,

I just got off the phone with MediaPlay here in Detroit (granted my cat knows more about the DVD promo going on than the MediaPlay people....but anyway). They said That every tuesday, any new release that day is free with 4 DVD trade-ins. The dvd's can't have bad scratches, and have to have the cover, upc, etc present -- no altered upcs or promo dvd's either. During the week she said any new release is $13.99 with 2 dvd trade ins -- which didn't make sense - i think she meant 1 dvd, and any reg. priced DVD (under 26.99)

Anyway, it sounds promising -- but, in most cases, you are not saving that much. If you figure each used dvd is worth around 5 dollars, and some MUCH more -- but even at that, you are giving them $20 in used DVD's to get their $27.99 dvd for free -- especially when the same DVD can be bought for $15.99 at the same time at target - not to mention they will turn around and sell each of your used dvd's for at least $10....

I don't know -- it sounds good -- but it's not that great...

I'll put it in perspective with this.

You give them:

1) Teaxas chainsaw Massacre (2004) special edition (2 dvds, but counts as one)
2) 50 first dates
3) Spiderman
4) Matchstickmen

…for Butterfly effect for free. Well, the dvd's you traded in are worth far more than the $27.00 you are saving -- which is far, far more for the $15 you can get it for at Target....lol. On the flip side, if you have 4 crap dvd's that you cannot get rid of at all -- this may be a good deal -- and the ONLY time it may be a good deal...

Well, I am on my way to Media Play with Fulci's New York Ripper, Happy Tree Friends Vol 1, Buffalo 66, and Legally Blonde.... oh....wait, now that i think about it -- i am giving them much more than they are giving me.... I am staying home....haha...

Wow, I cannot believe I just analyzed this that much….oh well…

My 3 cents,

Matt

Bummer. Oh well, it's always worth a try to find an under-average sales person

Well that's not hard to do

You probably have a harder time finding a completely competent worker.

Just did this deal today. The CS said it has gotten a huge response, which must be because there was 4 people ahead of me doing the same thing at 10am. Anyway, it is trade any 4 DVDs for a new release on Tuesday (there is NO price limit for the new DVD... for now at least). Also, trade one DVD for a new release on Tuesday (must be less than $26.99). Not bad considering I traded in 4 DVDs that would've gotten me less than a few bucks a piece on ebay.

Also FYI: Aqua Teen Hunger Force: Vol. 2 and Sealab 2021: Season 1 are both $19.99 there this week. That is the best B&M price I could find for those.

It's supposed to be anything released within the last 30 days. I'm going in tomorrow to get Aqua Teen, Sealab, and K Street. I figure I'll give Aqua Teen volume 1 a shot too, just to see.
