buying used at Blockbuster?
I've heard that Blockbuster and some other chains only carry altered versions of R rated and unrated movies. Is this true? I sometimes shop there for used DVD titles but I don't want to get stuck with "cleaned up" edited movies. Do they mark these titles with some disclaimer? If not, is there any way to tell?

Most Blockbuster discs are now Unrated. They're not as bad as they used to be about carrying Unrated versions of films, except we only got the R-rated versions of IN THE CUT (so no Mark Ruffalo nudity) and THE DREAMERS. The way you can tell is by looking for the MPAA "R" logo on the back of the box. Usually there is "Unrated" plastered all over discs if they are.

But didn't they, at least at one time, even go so far as to have special edited versions of otherwise R rated movies? I thought there was some hubbub over certain titles that they carried only in sanitized-for-Blockbuster cuts. So that's over with?

If I remember correctly, the only instance of Blockbuster (and other retailers) getting their way with an R-rated cut of a film was on Requiem For A Dream, and that was because it was released in theaters with an NC-17 rating. I suppose the same could possibly be true for Showgirls.
But outside of those, I think it probably didn't happen much. There's currently some company in Utah being sued for selling films with violence/swearing/sex edited out of them, so I'd think Blockbuster would be in the same situation if they tried to rent their own cuts of films.

OK, thanks, I thought it was happening with more titles than that. I thought they were getting TV edits or something. That's good. Sometimes the packaging is not complete but for many titles as long as the DVD is complete I don't care.

According to the director's commentary, the R-rated DVD version of the documentary Porn Star: The Legend of Ron Jeremy was specifically created for "family video stores" like Blockbuster and Hollywood Video. ("Porn Star" was also removed from the title on the R-rated release.)
