When did you really become an addict?

I had around 50-60 movies before I found this site. I always loved movies, but never bought that many DVDs. Also I am currently dating a girl who loves movies. So it was a combination of having someone who loves movies as much as I do, and finding this lovely website

When we got a new computer with a DVD Rom in 1999 I was really excited to check out DVDs, because I've always been a movie fanatic and wanted to see what special features were all about. So I picked up Austin Powers because I liked it and it has a lof of features (and Seth Green) well I loved it, and being able to skip to all the Scott Evil parts was like heaven to my 15 year old self
Sadly that computer broke and I didn't get another one with a DVD Rom until 2001. So then I bought a few more and just fell in love with the format. Little by little my addiction has grown, I'd say it really got kick started in 2002. I started getting rid of my tapes (I didn't have a huge amount anyway) and kinda got stupid and basically bought any dvd that looked cool. Now I'm more discerning and don't buy them just for special features. The online community contributed too, I always loved reading about what other people thought of DVDs and looking at what they owned, which just made me buy and and more.
DVD really opened me up to so many films I doubt I would have seen if we still just had VHS/laserdiscs now. No matter what the future movie formats are, DVD will always have a special place in my heart *wipes away tear*

My DVD addiction started around June 2002 during the Blockbuster Video Buy 2, Get 1 Free sale.
After graduating college in 2001, I got a job and finally had money to spend. I was always cost-conscious but had an a compulsive order to buy things (comics, basketball cards, CDs, clothes when I was younger).
I got addicted to finding deals at Fatwallet.com and one deal was the Apex-3201 for $49.99 + Tax after Mail-In-Rebate at CompUSA back in April 2002. That was my first DVD player. I had gotten my first DVD back in August of 2001 as a gift from a friend (Lawrenece of Arabia LE).
Up until that Blockbuster sale, I only had about 4-5 DVDs but during the sale I bought about 20 or so DVDs. A lot of those were scratched but still played and I even got 3 full screens during the sale (How the Grinch Stole Christmas, The Mummy Returns, and American Pie 2). I got rid of the Grinch but still have the latter 2. I'll make the appropriate replacements when I find the other 2 in WS for around the $5 range. Actually, AP2 doesn't bother me that much since it's a comedy but since The Mummy Returns has big action scenes, that one bugs me big time.
Then I found out about CH and DDD.com and the like. Now I have over 740 DVDs in about 2 years. That's about 1 a day so I know what I need to cut down. I've been lookin' at my collection and slowly weeding out movies that I'll never watch and only have them cuz I got them cheap.
The only debt I have is college loans (I pay off CC Bills in full every month) and I don't spend money on much other stuff than food and occassionaly going out to clubs and what not so I can justify my DVD spending. But I gotta cut down cuz it sucks knowin' that you bought a DVD for $15 that's still sealed and then watchin' it go on sale at Best Buy for 2 for $15 a few months later.

Summer of 2000.
Picked up a few DVDs before I had my own player, then found a deal on a Pioneer DV-333 (I think that was the model) through Buy.com that took it from $250 to around $80 delivered.
The rest, as they say, is history.

I sincerely hope the out of work person who is getting married in a few weeks is pulling our legs...I can't imagine letting DVD "ruin your life" and I am as OCD as the next person. I am a relative newcomer to these boards but I have to wonder if some of the posts are just done in the name of humor...

From: You have moved into a dark place. It is pitch black. You are likely to be eaten by a grue.
You might have a DVD problem if...
I've been a movie lover pretty much all my life. If I had to pinpoint exactly when I was fully sucked-in by the magic of a movie it would be E.T. in 1982 (I was not quite old enough to go go to see Star Wars or Empire in the threatres during their first run).
I got hooked on DVD when I heard it was in development, in 1995 or 1996.
When I finally saw a friend's player in July 1997 and he showed me "Mars Attacks!" with the joke alternate language track, the alternate Spanish track (which was hilarious) and the pristine picture and sound (freeze frame that actually held the picture COMPLETELY STILL AND CRISP AND CLEAR! WOW!)
I didn't start buying DVDs until 1998, but nearly right away I was buying as many as my student budget would allow (i.e. not many - maybe one a week) and doing stupid web site things like Jaboom and other "click for hours to get a $20 Amazon.com GC" programmes to pick up some discs "for free."
Then Columbia House started their DVD Club, and almost right away a bunch of us on another forum figured out how to max out the system for the best deal.
Of course there was DVDExpress.com's bargain basement, and god bless Reel.com with their trivia coupons and random $1 discs. In 1999-2000 there were SO MANY crazy deals that my per-disc average was around $6. There are many of us who lament those days.
Once coupons started drying-up on my favourite forum at the time, I started looking around for other sites that may post bargains, and it was then that I discovered DVD Talk and noticed that it got 10X the traffic of the old forum I posted at since 1997.
Being unemployeed in 2001 meant that I only bought a dozen discs between February and November - only a few essentials - but I did take that time watching all of the discs that I owned over again, including all of the commentaries, extras, etc. And some fun movies that I did buy, like Royal Tenenbaums and the remake of Ocean's 11 had lots of replay value and lots of great extras.
Now it's the Columbia House TV Edition club that's drawn my focus, but I've almost gotten everything through that that I want. So I hope they add some new titles or additional seasons of other sets (like the last two Babylon 5 seasons) soon.
And of course the DDD 20% off sale means that I can't afford that operation I need.

Fall 1999. Got my first DVD, and I never looked back since then. I didn't buy that much DVD at first because I don't have a lot of money (I'm still on high school then), but I always buys some DVD whenever I got any money.

I have been a collector (cards, comics, figures) since I was small therefore collecting DVD is just an extension of what I used to do.
I think I amassed a reasonable collection so far, there are still some DVDs that I want however, I been able to control my buying habit and delay these purchases until I find them on sale or something. There are few must buys that I get on release dates but usually most of the DVDs in my collection have been purchased via cheap preorders, sales (coupons) or cheap bins. I'm always looking out for the best deal possible.
My income right now prohibit me from spending even more money on DVDs than what I'm spending right now. Will see what happens in the fall when all of the movies and TV shows that I want come out.

I got addicted when I got movies like Battle Royale and a lot of other foreign movies.
It lasted maybe 6 months and I bought about 75 DVDS (a lot of $).
I'm finally getting out now, selling off the ones I just bought, unfortunatly I am now addicted to Criterions, buying 7 in a week.... so all the $ from the DVDs Im sellng now goes to buying Criterions.

February 1984 with LaserDiscs. My collection peaked at 910 titles. Then it was September 1997 with DVDs. My collection is now 1,215 titles. My name is Dana and I am a DVDaholic. Please help.

Re: When did you really become an addict?
When Criterion released King Kong on laserdisc back in the mid-80s.
Although the lower price of DVD and increase in obscure releases has definitely caused an increase in collecting over the past few years.

Oh man, I know what it is like to be told you're wasting money... I still have a problem... my Mom watches everything I do with my money, checks my bank statements etc... so I've devised ways of siphening off $20 here and there so when a good deal comes along I can satisfy my thirst, like a crack addict looking for his next hit.
I swear, she's so strict... the IRS isn't this bad.

When they were practically giving away DVDs in 1999 and 2000. All those web sites where you could pick up Amazon gift certificates. I probably picked up about 50 pieces for free.

now 7-10 a week with imports, that's pretty nice there gut
I envy you. I got addicted by the Reel.com/ValueAmerica $100 off $150 etc etc, but immediately after that stuff ended (I was an Anandtech forumite at the time) I found dvdtalk and the Columbia House threads...$6.50 or so a piece when I could no longer get them for basically free got me hooked. I had a dry spell for a year or so 2-3 years ago, but since then I've been going way faster than ever before, and the guilt overcomes me when I think about the amount of money I must've spent at this point (with a 500+ collection that isn't even that big for a member of this board).

1988. When I first heard surround sound for the home, got my first receiver the next year. I can't claim a large collection due to my other addictions taking money away, though. (that damn "eating every day" thing really hampers my movie buying) I'm somwhere under 150 counting LD and DVD.
