When did you really become an addict?
 

I have to admit back in November 1999 when I got a DVD player and my first batch of DVDs (The Matrix, X-Files, Star Trek VII-IX WS) I didn't forsee having as big a collection as I do nowadays. I ended up only buying 1 DVD in 2000 (Metallica S&M).

For me I didn't really start buying movies until around Christmas 2001 where I bought Seasons 3&4 of X-Files. Those were my first TV on DVD purchases and I thought it was great that I could watch it without commercials and at my leisure.

The biggest reason for me only having bought 14 DVDs from 1999-2001 was my parents. They always sort of looked down on me for spending money on DVDs, until then everything went into upgrading/building more computers. They would always ask me "why waste your money on movies?"

Shortly afterwards my parents eventually gave in and liked having a "Blockbuster" in my bedroom.

So what prevented/started your buying addiction?

A roommate, sometime in the summer of '98, got a DVD player and a few DVDs (I distinctly remember Tomorrow Never Dies in the silver case being one of them.) I wasn't going to be living in the same room as him until early '99 so I didn't see much point in spending the money. When I moved in, I wasn't totally thrilled with his selection and saw some cool DVDs at Best Buy. I ended up buying a number of them at the time (Hmmm.. Dark City, The Thing, Brainstorm, Dr. Strangelove and maybe one or two more) just so I'd have some old favorites around to watch. Then I would occasionally buy a couple just because I knew at that point, buying a DVD player was inevitable.
Bought a player when I moved out in late '99 and then the addiction kicked in full-tilt. I was living on my own and could spend my money as I wanted, so I did. Tons and tons of DVDs. If I'd bought online using stuff like that ridiculous Five Star (? whoever had midnight madness) deal, I'd probably have twice as much as I do now.
It basically continued until I hit 300-325 in 2001-2002. All of the sudden, there wasn't much I wanted. Sure, there was stuff I wanted, but nothing that I was dying for. I ended up putting the money that would have gone towards DVDs in the new computer fund and scored a Mac. Then I started stashing money to move to LA.
Now I'm here. And while money's tight... the addiction has returned full-force. Hell, I just added 40+ discs to my Amazon list last night. (and my total is about 375-380 -- the last few years were pretty slow.)

You are truly addicted when it ruins your life financially, socially, and psychologically. :)

It began with Blair Witch Project (10/99) to Station Agent (6/04), which I got yesterday from using DDD discount code. :) Many of the DVDs in between was free due to the help from several giving websites and their points systems.

Tell me about it, for the last week I've done nothing but watching Stargate SG-1 and X-Files on DVD :)

I've been addicted to dvd since day 1... back in '98. I've always had to be slightly sneaky with titles, since being a student in debt, still living at home for the time being, my parents get pissed when they see more dvds coming into the house... hiding dvds in clothing, textbooks etc was the moment I realized I have a serious DVD problem....

Oh, and one time I saw an acquaintance when I was buying a disc and he said "Holy shit...do you buy a dvd every time you go out!?"... hmm.... maybe I do. Oh well, I'm addicted and I love it. And TVD certainly didn't help any... I'm addicted to season sets even more so than I was movie discs.

collection sitting at about 925 dvds at the moment

Good god man, 925. What kind of storage do you keep those all in? I fill 2 36"x36" bookcases and I only have 94 DVDs (really 124 if you break out the sets and a lot are TV sets).

I only plan on getting around 50 more over the course of the next couple months with almost half of that just Star Trek Seasons (VOY, TOS, TNG).

I was "addicted" for a few months a while back. Then I realized that eventhough this is a fun hobby, its too much on my small bank account. So I sold off the ones that I knew I wouldn't watch anymore or the ones that I don't "need". Then I started buying only ones that I really really wanted.

I'd have to say I've been addicted to movies since birth... And the more years that go by, the more impossible it is to kick the habit. Especially since I don't want to stop.

Thats what happened to me last year, I bought ~150 DVDs last year, back in January I did what you did, sold off around 100 DVDs I didn't think I'd ever watch again or ones that I didn't know why I had bought.

I definately became in addict in 1999-2000 when all the online stores were offering crazy deals. I remember the days when I had $20 off $20 purchases at Reel.com and $1 DVDs at 800.com and $15 off $20 purchases at FamilyWonder.com. In those days, I bought everything I could while I could.

I'm still an addict of the format, but it takes me a full year to buy as many DVDs as I used to buy in a couple months. Ah, those were the days...

I became a movie addict in May of 1977. I became a movie collector in 1980 with the VCR and after buying over 600 movies in the VHS format ( I never did do Laser disc, as I always said anything as large as an LP will never make it...hey I was right!)
I became a DVD addict in "98" before I bought my player and had 500 movies before I said this is just plain silly, most movies have no replay value and in my opinion there are about 250 (foreign and domestic movies even worth owning. I have since sold most of my collection and redefined my movie taste after being inroduced to foreign film in 1999. I am currently working on getting my collection finished. There are around 100 more I need and when my collection is finished it will be around 220 total.

My brother in law (krsutytheclown on the boards)just passed 2000 dvd's not long ago and he is not even a movie fan...just a numbers fan lol...

It happened right around the time I found this evil internet site.

I Bought my DVD player in 2001 (right after school let out for the summer). And The First DVD's I bought where The World Is Not Enough and End of Days... but after that I bought maybe 1 or 2 a month (nothing big), but then In January of 2002 I started buying Buffy and Simpsons sets, but it didn't get bad until Friends and Felicity came out... Now I have 715 DVDS (half of which are TV shows).

when I could afford to, then again I would consider myself normal compared to you people, I wouldn't consider 50 some dvds in 2 years an addiction in comparison to your collections

I immediately became an addict when I saw The Matrix on DVD. When I put it in and saw the animated menu and music I was hooked, I thought it was the most amazing thing in the world. And to top it all off, the amazing clarity and sound. Ive been hooked on DVD's ever since, I still love putting in the DVD for the first time to see the menu.

It started from the get-go.

and found $7 DVDs in this evil DVD Clubs forum.

That's exactly when I got started. I had so many accounts with so many Online companies (and their wacky coupons) between 1999-2000, I was getting DVDs sent to me on a daily basis.

Once the Online bubble burst, I stuck to this store by my office that has new DVDs at used prices...and the occasional Online purchase (Amazon STL, Price mistakes, etc).


For the most part, I buy at least one DVD purchase a week (if I'm lucky, ONLY one). But with Wal-Marts $5 bin....it's really hard to stay away. AND a quick stop by the 99¢ Store today brought about 4 DVDs home just to get me thru the weekend til Tuesday.

I need my fix, man!

I'm at 604 DVDs and about a quarter of those are TV shows.

I've been addicted to movies for as long as I can remember....
I started building my own VHS library after I got my first VCR back in ..1980 ? That went slowly, buying some titles, but taping alot of movies myself off of HBO...Then in 1989 I started working for Blockbuster.....9 years later when I left I had a huge collection of VHS and Lasers, mostly previewed stuff I bought from my own stores that I knew was clean...then 1998 came and I got my Panasonic A-110. It's been downhill ever since as I upgrade titles from my library constantly to DVD, and even get suckered with some double dips.

Now I have DVD standalone players in the family room, my office, and bedroom; three PCs with DVD drives; a portable DVD player; and one in my van.....

God forbid HD-DVD......

I'm glad I missed VHS pretty much. I only had like 10-15 VHS movies and most of them were Star Trek episodes/movies. It never really did anything for me because I didn't have a TV or a VCR in my room until much later.

I don't know about you but I don't plan on buying all my TV sets or non-Action/Sci-Fi DVDs again on HD-DVD.

I'm addicted to film and film collecting...dvds just come with it at this time. I could care less what format it's on as long as it's presented in a proper fashion and I can own it.

I wouldnt call it addicted, but rather....dedicated. I'm building a personal film library, for enjoyment and historical reasons, as well as a time-capsule of Gut's Faves. I'm way beyond collecting. I average 7 to 10 a week, including imports, and currently stand at 1,627 titles.

I never collected VHS. But, I did collect LD's. My first DVD player was also a Panasonic A-110. I bought it at the Good Guys and I got three complementary DVD's with it. The discs were: The Exorcist, The Fugitive and The Wizard Of Oz. I immeadiately went across the street to Tower Record and bought five more DVD's. Then I went home. When I finally went online, my addiction increased geometrically. I now have two DVD players connected to my main TV, one of the players is a region free player. I frequently watch two movies at once and just flip between them. I gave my A-110 to my brother to get him started in DVD's. It still works.
