Encountering dumb customers in the store

I was in Best Buy today browsing their DVD section. I was in the Sci-Fi section and there were two guys next to me buying the Star Trek TOS DVDs (one disc w/ two eps on each). What boggled my mind was that they bought all of them, clearing the whole shelf. They must have put 30-40 of them into their shopping basket. I told them that they would be released in season sets starting in August so it would be best to wait. Not to mention a hell of a lot cheaper - $22.99 x 40 dvds x 15% tax = $1057.54 compared to the $400 or so it'll cost to buy the three box sets. The amount of shelf space he would be saving was another factor. Yet the guy said "oh well" and bought them anyway. The hell?

Have you ever encountered dumb customers while buying DVDs? I thought this went way beyond the usual FS/WS stuff.

Or try to make friends with them. Stupid, rich friends wouldn't be a bad thing to have.

I don't even pay attention to others in the store anymore. I have a low enough opinion of people as it is.

Most intelligent people do most of their shopping online anyway.

I have often heard customers yelling or arguing with the employees' that certain movies were available on dvd even though at the time those movies were not. Three that come to mind are the Indiana Jones trilogy, Back to the Future and Star Wars trilogy.

As long as the plastic/cash was good, I'm sure Best Buy wouldn't be unhappy if you showed up with a truck and loaded up

Defiant asked if you could tell us some of those experiences, not what you think of spenders in general.

These "I confronted another DVD buyer" threads are very weird and surreal to me. I guess I just don't care what strangers are doing when I'm at the store.

Man, that's f'in hilarious. I'm still laughing.

Thank God I didn't have a mouthful of coffee or milk or something this morning. I would have spit it out all over my screen and keyboard.

Well, yes, that is pretty dumb, however they may have had a less obvious reason for buying them like that.

1) Intent to sell on Ebay.
or
2) Finish out their own already started collections.

But yes, if they were buying them because these were their first purchases in this particular collection, and didn't care that the season sets were coming out, then these morons were pretty stupid.

I agree -- although I've gotten it from the other side. I've occasionally picked up a few strange discs as gifts (a couple full-frame discs for relatives & friends who steadfastly refuse to see the widescreen light no matter what -- and I'm not paid to evangelize the format and have shown them the difference) and will inevitably have some clown come up and go on about widescreen, blah blah blah. Or when Good, Bad & Ugly was released as a CE, I snagged the older version for a friend who wanted it just to have it. Of course, that prompted people to point out that there was the infinitely better CE, and so forth.
Needless to say, it's annoying. I prefer widescreen; I generally prefer larger CEs, but people decide to play good samaritan and expound on why something else is better. Really, I just want to get in and get out and not trade OAR philosophy with someone.
However, if I hear someone wondering aloud or conferring with a companion (or a friend... or two companions... or two friends, we don't know which) on a point of genuine confusion, I may toss in a helpful word.
But, really, I assume that people making purchases are reasonably well-educated about them and are capable of making their own decisions. And if not, that's their problem to solve. I'm not paid to worry about other peoples' buying decisions.
(Of course, that doesn't stop me from thinking to myself that someone is a bonehead when we're standing in line to buy. )

Well, number 1 would be pretty stupid, considering that the entire collection of 40 DVDs is selling for around $400 on ebay, and there are quite a number of them (people getting rid of the old discs in anticipation of the new season sets). Number 2 is possible, but it still doesn't explain why they wouldn't buy online where they could save at least 1/3rd of the price.

Circuit City and many retailers limit you to 3 or 5 (can't recall which). I think this is to prevent people from capitalizing on sales or pricing mistakes. But you do realize that the discs in question are all separate titles, right? Unless I misunderstood something, the original poster is saying that he saw someone buying all or most of the discs in the Star Trek series, not 30-40 of the same disc.
